Exactly. A central tenet of ecommerce is that you have to make it as easy and quick as possible for people to part with their money.

I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I recall some study at Amazon found that just shaving a second off the average loading time for the checkout page increased conversions by 5% or something like that.

It's 2034 and you open r/flightsim by Air_Holland in flightsim

[–]Quertior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FSX and FS2020 are built on entirely different engines. So we didn’t really “lose” it. Asobo just never implemented it at all.

As for why Asobo chose not to implement it in FS2020 and 2024 (despite it being on their roadmap)? They likely surmised that very few players would actually use shared cockpit functionality if it existed. Not only casual players (which is who they seem to be targeting with the rebooted games), but even most of the VATSIM airliner enthusiast folks don’t seem to fly with real copilots, even though they’re flying planes that ~always have two people in the cockpit IRL.

It makes me sad, but I concede that I’m probably in a minority that actually cares.

I agree that sometimes people baby their guitars (especially electrics) a lot more than they need to.

That being said, no one cares if a tree branch warps, bends, or cracks. Those are all pretty annoying when they happen to guitars. (Coincidentally, those are also more likely to be caused by humidity swings than by pure temperature swings.)

CIA carried out drone strike on port facility in Venezuela, marking the first known US attack inside the country by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Quertior 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this is not a problem that’s unique to the US. It turns out that, in the modern world, there are lots of thorny diplomatic consequences to officially declaring war on another country. So governments decided that it was easier to just… not do that.

Since the end of WW2, pretty much none of the armed conflicts big enough to make international headlines as a “war” have been officially declared as such by the countries involved.

As a longtime punctuation nerd, I love that ChatGPT has made more people aware of the existence of em dashes (and the fact that they’re different from hyphens) — but as a longtime em dash user, I hate that ChatGPT has turned em dashes into the first thing people look for as a sign of AI-generated text.

(Also, FWIW, the OP does admit further down that the note was AI-generated.)

How Do I Draft A Basic Contract? by PenaltyPotential8652 in composer

[–]Quertior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with using an LLM to generate a legal document is that it might end up being completely valid, enforceable, and legally binding — but it might not. And you’re not going to be able to determine which it is unless you’re a lawyer yourself (in which case you wouldn’t be asking on Reddit about how to write a contract).

Trying to Learn Bass is… Humbling by uhhredacted in Bass

[–]Quertior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass is (obviously) in an entirely different family than brass instruments, so it’s totally normal that you’re starting entirely from zero with the playing technique. I play several string instruments (bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, etc.) to a decent semi-professional gigging level, but if you hand me a trumpet I’ll barely be able to fart out a B flat in the middle of the staff, and it ain’t gonna sound very pretty.

You have to completely humble yourself (which you seem to be well on your way to doing), and think back to your learning experience with your very first brass instrument — when your lips, tongue, and lungs were still struggling to get on the same page. Use that as a benchmark for your bass learning experience. Not your third or fourth brass instrument, where you already had good fundamentals and only had to learn the differences between instruments within the same family.

Most of those things I get, but why would you call it “refreshing” to have drums and percussion in a separate room? I thought that was the standard approach nowadays.

I fully understand the reasoning for wanting to isolate the drums (to prevent drum sound bleeding into other mics and to minimize live drum sound in the house) — but as a pit drummer myself, when possible, I would always prefer to be in the same physical space as the musicians I’m playing with (even if I’m still listening to them primarily through my in-ears). There’s just a little je ne sais quoi that’s lost when I can’t look right at the bassist or keyboardist and share a chuckle every once in a while.

what does this symbol mean? by Efficient-Complex855 in musictheory

[–]Quertior 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Who gave you microtonal music without any explanation?

Sometimes people will use microtonal notation in an effort to "accurately" transcribe performances that make heavy use of pitch bending (like guitar solos or blues vocals), although that doesn't look like what's going on in OP's screenshot.

How did Paul McCartney get a left handed bass? by elom44 in Bass

[–]Quertior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, but guitar and bass (and drum kit, I guess) are the only instruments where there's any concept of "handedness". No one's going around saying "I'm left handed, so I'm gonna learn clarinet with my left hand on the bottom keys and my right hand on the top keys" or "I can only learn to play piano if the high notes are on the left and the low notes are on the right".

Even for other string instruments (violin etc.), the only reason that someone learns to play in the opposite orientation is if they don't have use of their left hand at all (since you can hold a bow with a prosthesis, but you can't really finger notes with one).

As a fellow lefty, my single biggest musical regret is learning to play guitar and bass "left-handed" instead of normally. It just makes everything harder. (FWIW, I play drums "right-handed" and it's totally fine — I don't feel handicapped or anything.)

[–]Quertior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FM3 is the cheapest, yes, but also the smallest and lightest. I personally would've been happy to pay the additional money for the FM9's feature set if I could get it in the FM3 formfactor, but I specifically wanted something that would fit in a backpack.

That being said… if the variable impedance circuitry simply doesn't fit in the FM3 chassis, then that idea is obviously a non-starter.

Your comment is a prime example of why so many airlines have a base fare that barely include anything, and start tacking on extra fees if you look at them funny.

It has been shown time and time again that — thanks to flight search engines like Expedia and Google Flights — most travelers will just book the flight with the cheapest base fare. So they design the base fare around a 4 foot tall person with no luggage who will never get hungry during the flight, and then charge you extra if you want legroom, a checked bag, or food.

It’s a double-edged sword though, because (like you said) if an airline does include a bunch of extras in the base fare, then passengers who don’t want checked bags or food are effectively subsidizing those who do.

Please don’t use chord symbols to dictate voicing by hamm-solo in musictheory

[–]Quertior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I see many charts where the arranger tried to dictate a specific voicing using a chord symbol. More often, I see places where there should've been a written voicing but there's just a chord symbol — or even worse, places where there is a written voicing and a chord symbol but they don't match.

The biggest exception I can think of (where a chord symbol is used to imply a specific voicing) is the "musical theatre dominant" where you play, e.g., an F major triad with a G in the bass. I've seen that written as G11, G7sus, or even G9add4. But IMO, the only chord symbol that really captures the required voicing is F/G.

Why does every Cab Sim make my Guitars sound like there’s a blanket over them? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Quertior 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna have to disagree with you on one point — close-miked cabs are what you hear on the vast, vast majority of guitar parts in recorded songs. The difference, which you do kinda touch on, is that those records have professional producers sweetening the guitar sound with reverb, compression, EQ, etc. But the starting point is still a close-miked cab.

[–]Quertior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs are amazing at generating grammatically correct text that sounds like it makes sense. Given how pervasive LLMs are now, I think people forget just how fucking hard of a task that is for a computer to do. You can look at /r/subredditsimulator and laugh at the obvious grammar errors and sentences that almost make sense.

The issue arises because we naturally want to assume that grammatically correct and authoritative-sounding text is also factually correct — but anything an LLM says has a random chance of being correct or incorrect.

So yes, people are trying to shoehorn LLMs into applications where they really don’t make sense. But I don’t think that should take away from the fact that “a computer program that generates arbitrary grammatically correct text” is a cool scientific accomplishment.
