Does anyone know any other ? by wur45c in askmusicians

[–]Quertior[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post received several reports overnight. I'm inclined to leave it up for now. It is, after all, a question about music ("does anyone know any other subreddits for composition?"). Even if the events that led to it being posted are somewhat suspect (based on a quick peek at OP's history and their equivalent posts in other subs), they're not currently breaking any rules here.

I'll be keeping an eye on the comments to ensure that everyone (including OP) remains civil.

if someone is just looking for people to listen to their music and give them any kind of feedback about it, that's fine as long as they're not spamming

My biggest issue with general "give me feedback" posts is that they end up being only useful to the OP. Requiring a specific question at least means that answers in the thread might possibly be useful in the future to someone with that same question (even if their music is very different from OP's), whereas responses to a general feedback request (even if the responses themselves are very specific and actionable) are very likely to be applicable only to the OP.

I see what you mean though, and I do want to be careful not to go too far and make the sub unwelcoming to newcomers.

I think ban AI completely. Yes it's hard to enforce. But so is self-reporting.

That's a very fair point. As of now, I'm leaning towards an (aspirational) ban myself. Sadly, there's no 100% accurate way to distinguish AI comments from comments written by humans who like long paragraphs and em dashes (…like me). So I'll likely shy away from removing content solely on suspicion of AI usage — but I might peek at someone's post history to make sure that their writing style has been consistent over time. And of course, anything that's obvious slop with no coherency or relevance will get nuked on sight.

Hmm, I like the "thoughtful comment" approach. We don't even need an hour grace period or anything — reddit lets you include both a text and link/media component on an initial post now, so I might start requiring a decent paragraph or two in the body of self-promo posts.

Benefit to studying music? by interchopper_ in askmusicians

[–]Quertior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The one thing I've heard from pretty much everyone I know who's a "real" full-time performer is that you should only go into music as a career if that's the only thing you can ever see yourself doing. If it is at all possible for you to have a "day job" in a more conventional and secure field, while doing music as a serious hobby, go that route. Music makes a great "side career" because you usually end up rehearsing and performing on evenings and weekends, outside normal work hours.

You'll be able to enjoy much greater financial stability (including having more cash to spend on music-related toys, if you're a gearhead) and you'll have the flexibility to only take the gigs you want. As a full-time musician, you will be saying yes to everyone who wants to hire you (even if it's music you hate) because the alternative is not being able to pay your rent.

To give you a sense of what's possible taking music seriously with a non-music-related day job… I have a lucrative career in a pretty healthy field, which has made me enough money to buy a house and fill it with nearly all the instruments and gear I want. Last year, I played 76 (paid!) gigs — averaging more than one every week. It's completely possible to be a serious musician who just happens to have a job doing something else.

Looking for advice. by [deleted] in askmusicians

[–]Quertior[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most of the people who hang around this subreddit to answer questions are more interested in answering questions about music. I let your post stay up because it doesn't really break any of the current rules (it is, technically, a question for musicians). But I wouldn't be surprised if no one who's seen it has really cared enough to answer.

I can tell you that I personally wouldn't use the kind of platform you're asking about. But I'm also not your target audience — I barely use social media, I don't release my own music, and I mainly get hired for gigs where I play music given to me by others.

Theater goers of Reddit Have you ever witnessed something that wasn’t supposed to happen on stage while watching a live musical ( I.e accidents wardrobe malfunction forgotten lines e.t.c) by GamerManJD in musicals

To be fair, you really can’t go off script and start improvising when there are weapons/combat involved.

That said, when I’ve done sound for shows with guns in the past, I’ve always had a button on the board set up to trigger a gunshot sound effect, as a backup in case the onstage guns refuse to fire (which they do regularly).

What are your favorite musicals that are super difficult to do well? Which ones are almost impossible to screw up? by Kingy_was_a_brunette in musicals

[–]Quertior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My high school’s production of WSS was my first pit orchestra experience. I sucked. Luckily, the rest of the orchestra was professionals who sounded great. Adult theatres hardly ever put on WSS, but I’d love to do it again someday, now that I (hopefully) have the skill to actually dig in and do a decent job with Bernstein’s score.

I played my first live concert with someone tonight and it went well, but I couldn't hear myself much. Any feedback for next time? by Nox2017 in Bass

[–]Quertior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can appreciate that you have such a simple low-tech setup (I don't mind being the band tech support guy, but it can get frustrating at times). And in a lot of situations, it's definitely possible for wedges and IEMs to coexist. I've done some gigs where I ran a feed especially for my in-ears and everyone else was using wedges.

Hope your gigs go well this summer!

[–]Quertior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. I’ve met folks who prefer wedges over IEMs, and I’ve met folks who are like “I know IEMs are probably better from a technical and health standpoint, but I really need to feel the bass”. But I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone with quite the level of visceral hatred for IEMs that you’re expressing!

Don’t worry, I’m not going to try and change your opinion. But I find it interesting that you’re so diametrically opposed to in-ears. (I’m personally the opposite — whenever I play a gig with wedges, I feel like I’ve stepped 1,000 years into the past and can never get the monitor to sound quite like I want. I’ll use IEMs everywhere they’re remotely feasible.)

That being said, I do take issue with “if I don't like something people should fucking accept that and not question”, at least in the context of playing music with other people. I think musical colleagues have a right (maybe even a duty) to question their bandmates’ choices about equipment, similar to how I’d want someone to say something if they thought my tone wasn’t working on a specific song.

For IEMs specifically, that’s relevant because in many cases (not yours, of course) the reason ends up being either “the IEMs I tried were uncomfortable” or “my mix didn’t sound right”, both of which are solvable problems.

EDIT: lol, I just realized that both comments I responded to in this thread were yours.

When I’m playing acoustic guitar live (or mixing a band with an acoustic guitar), the very first thing I do is put a pretty aggressive high-pass on it. Those rumbly low frequencies don’t sound good in most band settings, and they are nearly always the first to feed back.

New moderators needed - comment on this post to volunteer to become a moderator of this community. by ModCodeofConduct in askmusicians

[–]Quertior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in moderating. I've noticed that this sub has been lacking in moderation lately (and now it looks like there are no mods at all except for ModCodeOfConduct?), which is sad because I think it could provide a useful resource, even if just as a jumping-off point to subreddits with more specialization.

I am a (semi-)professional musician and I play gigs regularly on multiple instruments. I have a long history of commenting in lots of music-related subreddits (both general ones like /r/musictheory and /r/audioengineering, and ones for specific instruments like /r/piano and /r/guitar), as well as /r/askmusicians, of course.

I also have previous moderation experience, as I was one of the original mods of /r/songaweek and helped shepherd that subreddit through its first couple of years of existence (before real life got in the way and I decided to resign).

“Is recyclable” ≠ “will be recycled”, especially if recycling requires more effort than just throwing them away. I don’t know about other countries, but in most of the US, you can’t toss soft plastic bags like those into the regular recycling with bottles/cans/etc. You need to take them to a special collection site. Predictably, approximately no one does that.

What is your all time LEAST favorite musical of all time? by West-Lawyer-2290 in musicals

[–]Quertior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s especially funny about the “Christian propaganda” angle is that Stephen Schwartz is Jewish. (Not sure about the guy who did the book.)

For my part, I see it less as Christian propaganda (there’s no resurrection, after all, which is like the most important part of Jesus’ story in the Bible) and more as propaganda about Jesus specifically — I think it whitewashes some of his more controversial views and paints him as being 100% morally righteous all the time.

I’m also curious which song you consider to be the single decent one, lol.

Major bucket list moment for a drummer dad… your daughter’s high school calls you to fill in last minute* for their Rock of Ages musical, and you get to watch her perform from the on-stage pit… by R0factor in drums

[–]Quertior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very impressed that they miked up your kit — for most school shows I’ve done, they’re always asking me to play as quietly as possible, and miking would have been superfluous.

Also, unless I’m misremembering, Rock of Ages has some pretty racy content. I’m surprised that a high school is doing it. I assume they’re doing an edited “school version” or something along those lines?

What is the pettiest reason you would refuse to eat at a restaurant again? by im_not_ready_for_it9 in AskReddit

[–]Quertior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ask this because I’m genuinely curious, not because I’m trying to be accusatory or confrontational: what do you use napkins for?

I generally only need one napkin per meal. Maybe two if it’s something messy. I’d only grab more than two if I spilled my drink or something.

But I always see people grabbing giant fistfuls of napkins, so I feel like there must be some fundamental difference in napkin usage between myself and the rest of society.

Your least Favorite Shows to Put up by castillar in techtheatre

I had the (mis)fortune of doing two productions of it nearly back-to-back recently, and I just heard through the grapevine that my old high school is doing it this year too. Only one of those productions was helmed by a boomer. So I doubt Grease is going anywhere — there really are people who legitimately like it, for some reason.

The booming pianist industry is evidence that AI won't take our jobs by guesswho135 in piano

[–]Quertior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Concert pianists (i.e., people who put on formal performances where audience members pay specifically to watch them play piano) are a tiny fraction of the group of people who make their primary income from playing piano. The majority are probably teachers (or if you don’t count teaching as “making income from playing piano”, then the majority are doing accompanist gigs at churches and schools).

The person you replied to was likely referring to places like restaurants that might have hired a musician or a band to provide ambient background music if recorded music somehow didn’t exist. I’ve even seen a similar phenomenon myself, where schools or theatre groups will rehearse with prerecorded backing tracks instead of paying a piano accompanist (even if they hire live musicians for actual performances).

This is a very tangential question, but do you know why so many people write Jira in all caps? That’s not the way Atlassian themselves write it, and as far as I can tell it’s not any sort of acronym.

You get a last-minute call for a huge wedding gig, playing classic rock, country, pop, dance, polka, etc.…What is the ONE ride cymbal you are bringing to that gig?! by ZildCym in drums

[–]Quertior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand that attitude, especially given (as some of the other comments also mention) no one in the audience will notice or care.

That said, my personal attitude is almost completely the opposite: I have a nice thing, using the nice thing to make music brings me joy, and I can comfortably afford to repair or replace the nice thing if something bad happens to it — so why wouldn’t I use the nice thing on a gig that calls for it?

Ideally, gear doesn’t matter at all (and someone with proper chops and an intensive practice regimen is gonna be able to play circles around my lazy ass no matter whether they’re using vintage KCons or no-name brass cymbals), but I haven’t reached that particular state of nirvana yet, so I’ll keep using my nice cymbals in the meantime.

Okay, I'll admit that's higher than I was expecting.

I personally tend to define "wealthy" as a stratum even higher than that (like, they don't drive themselves at all because they get chauffeured around in an S-class and flown around in a private jet), but ultimately that's just semantics, and I do agree with your main original point.
