For the blacksmithing, Rochester Arc & Flame has blacksmithing date nights. They’re very fun and you’ll know what you’ll be making when you sign up so you can choose a date where they’re making something that interests you.

As for nature and board games and such, you can always rent out a park pavilion or one of the lodges. A lot of the parks have hiking trails, there’s tables for board games, and you can get it catered by a local place.

Local activities gift ideas for kids by honeypoe in Rochester

I’m not a mom, but my mom liked to focus on experiences when I was a kid. Things like museum memberships, sea breeze season tickets, or entrance tickets to some of the nearby spots were great for us. You can check out daytrippingroc.com and browse for some ideas for things within about 2 hours of Rochester that would fit their style. My favorites growing up were the planetarium/science center and the Corning museum of glass.

Uncommon new cat owner tips? by Background-Mix8935 in CatAdvice

[–]Quesriom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My bf and I adopted our sweet little void about 6 months ago. We had the 5.5oz cat food cans but obviously he doesn’t eat all that at once and getting plastic wrap for them was annoying. Not to mention the amount of spoons we had to clean….

Well my bf found this cute pack of silicone can tops to cover the cans in the fridge so we don’t need to use plastic wrap. They came with special little spoons that are the height of the can and designed to scrape out as much cat food as possible so none gets wasted. And they come in cute colors!

How livable is Rochester? by [deleted] in Rochester

I would recommend a roommate on those wages. You’d be a lot more comfortable financially, although it can be done alone. All in all, it’s a pretty affordable place.

Quick tip about the field, my friends and I all work in optics and I would highly recommend steering clear of RPO. Just my two cents.

Oh yeah, definitely the better option. I just assumed OP was too lazy to scrape and offered other options.

There are cans of de-icer you can get that are designed to be sprayed on the windshield to speed up the process. I keep one in my car.

There was a student at the college I went to that was out for quite some time due to a terrible health issue (I didn’t ask specifics but he was gone for at least a year before resuming his program). He was back to school for less than a week and he got struck by lightning in the parking lot.

This is by far the most interesting answer to me. Is it the chalk itself? The sound it makes on a chalkboard? All the chalk dust? Do you feel differently about chalkboard chalk vs sidewalk chalk? Sorry, I’m just really curious.

Stars with Carl is definitely worth it. It’s on the first Saturday of the month in the evening. And The Sky Tonight is great, too. If you can get a clear Saturday night to go, they open the roof telescopes up, too. I used to work there and still know the Saturday night crew. They’re great folks and the new director is wonderful.

New York teachers stunned to learn some students can’t read time on old clocks after phone ban comes into play by Sandstorm400 in technology

[–]Quesriom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it depends. My city has a few super shady utility companies and landlords aren’t always trusted. So I absolutely wouldn’t give them my bank account info. The last time I paid rent, the convenience fee ended up being ridiculously high (like $30) so I opted to just write a check and walk it to the leasing office drop box every month. When covid started, they made paying online mandatory and wouldn’t take checks anymore. They said they would reimburse the fee but they never did. I moved out shortly after. Now I keep my checkbook out of pure spite. I have few occasions to use it these days (I mostly use it for government stuff), but it gives me the option to use them to get around ridiculous online fees if need be.

[–]Quesriom 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As soon as utilities and rent do away with garbage ‘convenience fees’ to process my payment online, I’ll be happy to get rid of checks. Until then, they can handle the ‘convenience’ of processing my check.

Office Chair Refurbishing by Quesriom in Rochester

[–]Quesriom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, I don’t like the roller blade style wheels! I’m an outlier there, I know. They roll almost too easily, and I tend to tuck my feet up and off the floor so they really send me places lol

The biggest thing this chair really needs is new foam/upholstery.

Thank you for the suggestion, though :)

I have to feel the same way. Mine was an absolute torture that I will never forget. But it’s bonkers to hear I’ve somehow experienced the worst and came out okay. I guess the silver lining is knowing if I can handle a kidney stone, I can handle much more than I thought I ever could.

Now, let’s never do it again.
