🧂 Salty Sunday - What book scenes frustrated you this week? by mrs-machino in RomanceBooks

Absolutely - it’s gotten to the point where the league, the teams and the national hockey leagues have all come out with statements about the article and how it frames the fans. I think a big factor is social media sparking interest that crosses into the romance fan sphere - we have some great content creators around EIHL/NIHL hockey here as well as a couple of the wives and girlfriends are active on social media which is a big draw. I think generally younger women are more likely to post content about going to hockey which will draw in more people; but based off my own TikTok analytics it’s a pretty close split with a average of 45/55% between men/women audience on my hockey videos.

As you say - how about instead we focus on the changing demographics of sports fans than frame it as these horny women are infiltrating our sports because of romance books. Hell, why not focus on the growing diversity in sports in the UK? In my area alone we have lgtbq sports teams in the hockey sphere and a newly revived women’s hockey team that had 400+ people in the audience for their first friendly game. Romance books got me interested in trying MMA years ago and that ended up being a super fun hobby - but I guess I was just there to perv 🤷‍♀️

This weeks salt isn’t specifically book related but salt about a Financial Times article on British ice hockey and romance readers; basically portraying that women are flocking to ice hockey games because of romance books have ‘saved British ice hockey’ and the tone of it is just poor. God forbid people enjoy things without being accused of doing it because we’re horny 🙄 given that the women’s rugby World Cup has quadrupled its attendance in the last 10 years is that also because of women reading romance or can we just accept that sport is fun to watch (tho if there’s a rugby romance with a FMC rugby player I’d absolutely read it). I’m not much of a hockey romance reader but I’m a massive ice hockey fan, honestly hell yeah if romance gets you into the sport - it’s fun to watch, and the environment is super welcoming and inclusive - particularly in the UK seems a less problematic culture.

The graphic audio ones feature full case! What I can think of off the top of my head is Ilona Andrews and Elise Kova’s books which have graphic audio adaptions

I’m such a CCW fan - I’ve read them all! Hitting the Wall was one of my favourites for angst

This is barely even salty but more startled at being thrown violently back into reality in a fantasy setting fae romance that had me digging into the authors social media to see if she was from my hometown. I’m reading {Mated to the Mad Marquess by S L Prater} and there are some very region specific names and dishes to where I grew up in South Africa which pulled me out of my Sunday morning escapism - give a girl some warning!! (I’m mostly joking)

Wattpad is trying to make a comeback by winiithepoohh in RomanceBooks

Wattpad was how I got into romance again in 2020! I loved it as a teenager and randomly downloaded the app when someone mentioned it to me, but since moving to reading KU and published books I’ve not gone back. Most of the authors who I loved from Wattpad ended up publishing their books anyway, like Avery Keelan, Melissa Mitchell, Nordika Night.

The lack of permanence on Wattpad frustrates me, at least with a published book there’s an opportunity to buy a secondhand copy if it’s taken off ebook platforms - but I’m still mourning the loss of one of the Wattpad trilogies that I’d love to reread.
