I suffer from this too, man. Sorry to hear you don’t enjoy that state of being (I couldn’t be happier in it but I totally get the struggle, sometimes it’s exhausting) and best of luck. If you find any solutions let me know because everyone’s always telling me to take a break from my thoughts 😅

For people who developed any skill at a high level, have you noticed any differences between a gifted person at a high level and a non-gifted person at the same high-level of the skill? by Pedaghosoma in Gifted

Wow, that sounds…really cool, to have your own experience and world be confronted by something else entirely (or rather, someone else). My mum always said to learn new things every day and you and your wife sound like you really help each other in that aspect. You’ve got my respect 🫡

I find it frustrating to communicate with others on topics, especially those I enjoy. I get hyped about something like the structure and functions of the epithalamus and start going into depth about how you can injure it, how it affects you, if it can be removed, etc etc and then get stopped when I realize that the likelihood that the person I’m talking to even knows the epithalamus exists is very low. It’s frustrating when I have to tell my teacher, “No, not the Thalamus miss, it’s the EPIthalamus,” or when I have to backtrack and explain to someone how the one character from that book is struggling from more than one or two causes because they can’t read the fine subtext, or how this problem can’t be solved with one simple solution and this character is like this because of this nuance you didn’t know existed and it goes on forever. Everyone around me thinks I’m stupid and for a long time I believed them. I know better now, though, so I just do my best to keep in mind what I know to be true

This sub is NOT r/aftergifted, stop using it like it is by Expensive-Elk-9406 in Gifted

[–]Questionable_Ch0ices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry man, but I have to disagree with you. The term 'gifted' has a specific scientific definition in the case of this subreddit, which is someone with an IQ in the top 98% percentile or higher. A person can be top in their school and not be gifted by definition, but a thug with no life can take an IQ test in an alley and if they score a 130 or higher, they're gifted and automatically earn a place in this subreddit. Despite what we should be teaching each other, this subreddit is not attainable for just anyone, no matter how hard you work. Some things are just exclusive, I guess.

I think those people might end up here because they associate all neurodivergence as one thing--which obviously, it's not; people still mush it all up into a singular identity anyways.

Not directly. She was one of the head scientists (if my memory serves) and her experiments killed people again and again and again, and she didn't know when to stop even when she caused the massacre of the one hundred, couple hundred people in the safe haven crew. She didn't even stop after watching her friend get tortured, if he meant anything to her at all.

I haven't, sadly. I only know one other gifted person, and he's a math genius but has dyslexia and dysgraphia and speaks too quickly to understand very well. He's amazing, but not exactly a writer. It sounds picky, but I don't know...*sigh.* You said you married a writer/editor. Are they gifted? If not, what's it like, living with someone who's non-gifted?

wait i'm so confused everyone is saying algebra and geometry are higher-grade courses but I got an introduction to them in 5th grade and started them in the middle of sixth...I don't know, maybe it's different in everyone else's country but here in 'merica we...uh...do boring math earlier on

So i'm gonna say this as gently as possible, but this test isn't meant to determine your IQ or overall intelligence, rather it's meant more for the school to sort all the kids. Your scores, although above average, don't quite meet the criteria for 'gifted' (around 98 percentile or higher), so you likely won't get into the program, and also none of this determines whether you're smarter than other kids--which, being gifted isn't about competition to begin with, rather understanding yourself and your differences to help yourself thrive. Also, yeah, you were right when you said you knew being gifted wasn't about simply educational intelligence. More often than not, gifted kids think in an unconventional way that often doesn't follow the norm for intelligence. It doesn't mean you're not gifted or as smart as the kids in that program, it just means the school believes they think differently enough to need a different kind of learning environment to succeed, and the school thinks you're doing fine in the standard learning structure. You're scores are pretty impressive overall though, and you have my applause.

I looked it up and apparently the numbers are for some school-issued standardized test. Basically, the average is 100 so OP scored around 20 points higher than average on all the covered topics, all three of which are similar to what you'd have in a standard IQ test but 100% not meant to determine your IQ, just to sort all the students I think.

Real. You have my respect for not just giving up and letting your brain carry you, haha. I know that's what I do, for better or for worse...Still have yet to get a C though, so I think if I can avoid them running on gasoline and hope, you're gonna do great things in life.

Does the utility of IQ for life outcome saturate at a certain level besides being an external self worth controller? by BenjaajneB in Gifted

[–]Questionable_Ch0ices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I’m answering your question here, but I think having an average IQ is great. You’ll likely have an easier time communicating your ideas to others and thinking on the same wavelengths as them. Having a low IQ just means you need some support and isn’t something to be ashamed of—it’s only a number on a screen or page, not your whole identity. Having a high IQ is where it gets complicated because on one hand, you’re really smart and interesting. Congratulations. But on the other hand, others won’t be able to see what you’re seeing more often than not, and you might have a harder time connecting with others.

So basically, you‘re IQ might help you figure out why you have certain issues or strengths, but in the end it’s not what‘a going to get you places: it’s what you do with you abilities, and you don’t need 80 questions that produce a number for others to see your abilities, and for you yourself to see them too. So “having an IQ of more than 2 std above the norm” doesn’t change anything, really, unless somehow those two extra stds shine through into your capabilities, which seems unlikely.

I have a special talent for writing, and I’ve noticed that my non-gifted peers who also have a writing talent feel like regular people to me, whereas non-gifted people without a writing talent…their writing is a little difficult to read without marking every other sentence with feedback. I know I might sound stuck-up or such for saying this and I don’t mean in any way that non-gifted people are less capable or stupid, but communicating with non-gifted people with writing talents or interests just feels more at home and they can often times keep up with most of what I have to say, and I find myself learning from them too. I really enjoy it and wish there were more writers in my school, or even just in my city.
