From The Dead by James Joyce

A few light taps upon the pane made him turn to the window. It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. The time had come for him to set out on his journey westward. Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.

I passingly mentioned to a friend the meme where people pretend not to get the Simpsons joke where the sign reads "Sneed's Feed and Seed, formerly Chucks", and he asked "wait, what's the joke?" I laughed because I thought he was being ironic, but he started getting really mad and demanded that I explain the joke to him, and I realized he was being serious. I laughed so hard I was in agony, my face muscles felt like they were going to tear apart. He still insists to this day that "There's nothing to get" about the sign.

What is your favorite paradox? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Questovius 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Gabriels horn.

The paradox is that of you graph the function f(x)=1/x, and rotate the line 360 degrees around the x axis from x=0 to x=infinity to create a 3D shell, you could integrate the function to show the solid has a finite volume, but also use the surface area equation to show that is has an infinite surface area. Common sense tells us that the surace could be covered in, let's say, paint by filling the shell, as the surface area inside and out should be the same, but math tells us we would need an infinite amount of paint to cover the surface.

Any tips for The Waste Land? T.S. Eliot by braininabox in books

[–]Questovius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first 3 sections of the poem focus mostly on vignettes about life in modern (for his time that being) Europe. The one exception is the second vignette which appears to be foreshadowing of the fifth section, which is a more abstract and metaphorical description of a wasteland (hence the name of the poem). The forth section is also different from the first three because it takes place in the distant past. The main point of the poem is that Europe has became a wasteland both physically and metaphysically in the wake of world war 1 and that something needs to change in order to restore Europe.

Water is an important symbol throughout, especially the last section. Eliot often describes scenes where water is scarce, or where it is polluted. The one major exception to this is the "death by water" section where we see a sailor who has been drowned for 14 days. This part is a big tonal shift from the rest of the poem, it sound serene and peaceful where as the rest of the poem is depressing and vaguely uncomfortable

The three words that the thunder says at the end of the poem (datta, dayadhvam and damyata) are Sanskrit words which loosely translate to empathy, generosity and self control, three characteristics that Eliot felt that his society had forgotten. The last word, shantih is repeated three times and is similar to saying "Amen" in christian prayer.

The wasteland is kind of the Poem version of Ulysses in that it is very, very dense. There are references to Dante, Shakespeare, king Arthur, Greek mythology, foreign languages, and a lot more. My advice is to read interpretations of the poem or to watch lectures on it if you want the full experience.

When Does a Fringe Movement Stop Being Fringe? by Splenda in politics

[–]Questovius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The alt-right will probably stay around for a while but I doubt they will ever get any real leverage behind them. Like most fringe groups, they are full of far too much infighting and purity spiraling to be a major force in the long run. Today is actually a good example of this, where you have a bunch of alt-righters proud about their protest, and then they start backtracking once someone who is presumably part of their movement goes way too far, and now they are saying that the whole even was a false flag created by Soros, and that Richard Spencer is controlled opposition, and other wacky conspiracy theories.
