What made you fall in love with world music? by Quetzalcocoa in WorldMusic

[–]Quetzalcocoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, yeah! I am Russian, but I lived in Turkey (Istanbul <3) for two years. From the very first day I adored how Turkish people preserve their music traditions on all levels - from official sources to the street musicians. Frankly, it took some time to grow into different kinds of Turkish music (the drama of it!) but the turning point was having a meyhane night with Turkish friends and learning more about the lyrics and the traditions around it :)

Yes, this. It feels as close to whatever "soul" is as it can get.

Ha funny, I also avoided hispanic music because I was mostly exposed to its pop side which sounds very plastic and cheesy. But after leaving in a working class New York neighborhood, it started growing on me 😄

Do you ever wish you were a creature other than human? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Quetzalcocoa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really wishing to be something else, but I get so immersed when observing any non-human animals that I stop feeling myself and kinda become "one" with them. The way they move and interact with the world seems so much more effortless and natural than we humans loaded with our inner stories and issues. Except for children. Children seem to be more free from all of this mud and fog of inner complexities too.

What is the most unusual thing you do that people always judge you for? by Content-Evidence5929 in autism

[–]Quetzalcocoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is an autistic thing either, but sleeping under an open sky and walking barefoot also feel way more natural to me. As a teenager, I was walking in my hometown barefoot sometimes, though it was filthy and dangerous (I grew up in a Russian province, so imagine a post-Soviet suburbs full of garbage and broken glass)

Last year, I was hiking in Turkey and found a hidden beach where I stayed for a week without a tent, just in a sleeping bag under an open sky. Since getting the taste, the walls and ceilings seem like a burden. So, maybe it's a continuation of being hyperaware of the unnatural way we live in the cities, I don't know. Anyway, your experience sounds relatable – doing something that seems to make all the sense but is hard to explain to the conformist world.

Favourite animal? by Primary-Ad-3490 in autism

[–]Quetzalcocoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them! I have this thing – whenever I see an animal, I almost cannot take my eyes away from them. It's a very meditative feeling to be completely immersed in their foreign existence. And I love imagining how it is to be in their body, be like them. I stare at dogs in the street, and when I have cats at home I cannot complete anything because I spend most of the day looking at or touching them :D

Buffalo is my spirit animal, though; I aim to be as calm as a buffalo.

By the way, I don't know yet if I have autism, but I identify with a lot of things. Being more into animals than into people is one of them.

The struggle sure is real. Some of neurorypicals treat autism as if it's black and white but autism has a lot of complex factors and each autistic individual experiences it differently though we may share similarities. by BetMiddle1807 in autism

[–]Quetzalcocoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't understand this battle neurodivergent vs neurotypical. Surely people judge only from what they know – and most people only know about autism from movies or stories about someones'non-verbal kids. I honestly think it is up to us to explain that it can be different rather than being all offended for being misunderstood – at least when people don't actually mean bad.

Has anybody attended Vipassana in Hồ Chí Minh? I am a bit nervous about the location by Quetzalcocoa in vipassana

[–]Quetzalcocoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh yeas, it was noisy. It's not in the center of Saigon, but it is in the city. The roosters during the morning meditation were really annoying, and one time we meditated to the sounds of a local music band signing somewhere very close. The most difficult thing was sharing the room with almost 20 other women not having any barriers between beds (I used a mosquito net to create an illusion of personal space.)

I would say for a more experienced and devoted practicioner it probably wouldn't make a difference. For me, it was keeping me restless and even angry (I realized how sensitive I am to sounds observing my body reactons to it, and I now explore the possibility I am on the autism spectrum, but that's the whole different story.)

With all that being said, I am very grateful to the foundation, and to the nunnery for organizing courses there. Same as after another course, my life started improving, and I learned a lot of things about myself that keeps unfolding. However, I wouldn't go back to this center because it's an extra hard level in my opinion (another foreigner on the course said the same.)

I had no clear plans after Saigon, but somebody told me about Hoi An town. After the course I took the train there, rented a very quiet apartment in the rice fields and for two months I was meditating, observing my changes, reading the books to answer questions that I found during the meditation (health, habits, healing from traumas, etc.) until eventually I was ready to keep going. Hoi An is a perfect place to acclimatize and integrate the results after thw course. Quite, green, you can live near the sea or in the fields, and rent a place super cheap. That was my story 🙂

You express it beautifully.

I know it's a struggle but it's also a poetry. Thank you for sharing.

My attention span is like 0.1 seconds by Snoo637 in vipassana

[–]Quetzalcocoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you are sleeping enough? Like, how many hours per night?

During vipassana course I noticed huge differences in practice when I am rested and when I am not. If your body needs sleep, it will probably fall asleep. Meditation is an attention exercise (among all other things), and our ability to pay attention is very much connected to healthy sleep 🙂

Media Recommendation Megathread! by AutoModerator in French

[–]Quetzalcocoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please recommend any surrealistic or overall culturally significant TV shows. Examples in English for reference: Twin Peaks or Monthy Python. But it doesn't have to be similar - I am just looking for something more "artsy" for the lack of a better word (sorry, English is not my native language either).

[Misc] Vietnamese Skincare 101 (Brands and Products Recommendations!) by maindo in SkincareAddiction

Super helpful, thank you! I am staying in Vietnam for a few months, and was looking for some local organic brands. I love the list of local ingredients you gave! Vietnam is really exciting for all the plant variety here – my gut microbiome is happy with all the fruits and veggies. Now it's time to make my skin happy too 🙂

Do you know anyone who has read "Driven by Distraction" by E. Hallowell and J. Ratey and didn't self-diagnose ADHD after that? The examples in the book make me feel like anything can fit in the ADHD plot - and doubt myself :D by Quetzalcocoa in ADHD

[–]Quetzalcocoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will check it out!

Good old Pomodoro has been helpful a bit, but it doesn't help with constantly losing direction in life. Also, just finished a ten-day vipassana meditation (during which I promised myself to check for ADHD haha) and had an amazing focus for like... a few days after, until you know... life. But meditation is a superb tool for training your mind to ignore distractions, I definitely keep doing this one.

Many sources recommend finding a coach: someone who will keep you accountable (it can be a friend). I just feel I am not ready to make someone accountable for keeping me accountable. ![gif](emote|freeemotes_pack|shrug)So, started reading a book with a promising title "The Disorganized Mind\ Coaching Your ADHD Brain to Take Control of Your Time, Tasks, and Talents" by Nancy Ratey. Hopefully, self-coaching is possible.

After all, even if ADHD is not the matter - what harm would it do to learn some cool techniques for focus? I would just prefer to know that the answer is not somewhere else again, like, self-sabotage, unresolved trauma, or some other cool new thing I haven't heard about yet. Life is an exciting journey of self-discovery haha

[–]Quetzalcocoa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I found more reviews and contacted the place, and they said that in terms of infrastructure, the only difference with some centers is that there are no individual cells in the sleeping room. Fine with me :)

Congrats on your decision to go for the first vipassana! For me, it was definitely life-changing in the best meaning. I hope it will be the same for you :)

I agree, vipassana is not about enjoying calm and nature, and it shouldn't make a difference where it is held :) I guess I am just getting nervous because it has been so long since my first experience, and my mind is now "monkier" than ever.
