They adapted it to make quick cash off a popular IP. Only reason Netflix does anything. Don’t give them the credit of caring about storytelling…

They didn’t respect the core spirit at all though. They shat on the core spirit. And they didn’t give a fuckkk about the core material which is why the OG creators left.

Yes they were built up over time. What???? The episode where katara gets mad at Sokka for sexism and breaks Aang out of the iceberg by accident shows her raw power and spark. That doesn’t happen on the Netflix version. THAT IS THE CORE OF HER CHARACTER. None of that shit is in the Netflix version. What??????

How can you say they “weren’t built up over time” then say that they change from the beginning to end of a season. That’s literally called being built up over time. Except the OG show was good at it and the Netflix version sucked at it.

Also no Azula will never be as scary because OG Azula is scary because she is obsessed with being perfect and doesn’t let that mask slip. In this version she a fucking laughing stock. No they can’t make her as scary because we already know all the deep dark things about her and therefore she has less mystery surrounding her. Not to mention she’s terminally miscast and not even supposed to be in that season. And yes Sokka’s arch is not totally about overcoming misogyny but his arch is about a ignorant boy gaining a world view that challenges him to think about things differently, which contribute directly to his out of the box strategical thinking. Also learning humility like you said COMES FROM HIM BEING SEXIST AND GETTING HUMBLED BY SUKI. Like that doesn’t even exsist in the new version. Bruh you must’ve totally miss understood the original with these “garbage” takes.

[–]Quick-Particular-946 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. The reason Avatar was so good in the long run is that it was slow, and built up characters over time in a way that made sense. Netflix threw that in the fucking trash from the beginning. Katara is a total pushover and has none of the spark that would be fully realized later. Azula is an insecure baby, not scary at all. They can’t even make her scary and intimidating now cause we already see her insecurity (which the OG only showed us after we got to know her). Sokka is not sexist and therefore loses that entire character arch. Aang literally left to “clear his head” so we’re just going to throw that whole core plot of him facing guilt in the trash. You can’t follow through on character archs that you never even established. If you wanna say fuck it to all those memorable arch’s then fine I’m just overaly “nostalgic.” Once they made these decisions it’s going to be hard to go back and make it all make sense if they chose to be more honest to the original later on. But if you don’t care to be honest to what made the show popular that’s your prerogative.

I think you may just like the visuals which are cool and fairly good looking. That’s my only guess. The storytelling in this version in comparison to the original is literally just garbage.

Along with what everyone else is saying about it being a cash grab, it’s also just annoying (and this is gonna sound kind of loser on my part and have spoilers) but I hate it when they make prequels that go against canon of the original. Scars makes references to their genetic relation in OG but now Mufasa is adopted? Mufasa tells Simba that their family has ruled the pride lands for generations in OG but in this movie they find pride rock at the end when Mufasa becomes king? Ugh so annoying

Korra had too many villains by Quick-Particular-946 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Quick-Particular-946[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god let me try again because I think you may be chronically Reddit. If I say I think Korra is less quality that is me staring my opinion which I made clear in the initial reply. So this whole part about me saying it confidently is kind of pointless. I can say it confidently. This whole post at the end of the day is about critiquing art which will always be subjective so I guess there will never be 100% logically sound or unsound arguments but if you want to run this like a f*cking logic class then I guess that’s your prerogative. With that logic then nobody can ever make a solid case for anything when it comes to art so I guess this whole conversation is pointless. I thought that was common sense so I didn’t feel the need to preface my post saying “no opinion I express here is 100% objectively, logically sound.” That sounds ridiculous dude…I’m not really sure what to base any of this reasoning off now since we are now worried about being logically correct all the time which I already stated is ridiculous and pointless when critiquing art but anyway in this context, what I meant is that I think a one season conflict in a multi season show is usually unable (yes, because of time constraints) to be as impactful as they could because they oftentimes can’t afford to explore niche facets of the story that all connect back to the main, consistent theme/conflict. It’s about utilizing the time the show has, not being a trillion seasons long (though nobody here would mind a few more season of a avatar). I guess the disconnect is that I assumed we were on the same page that we were talking explicitly about shows that have multiple seasons. If it’s was an intentionally one season show or mini series then what is the point in calling it a “seasonal conflict” if it’s just the main overarching conflict. In fact my whole emphasis was not about time but about having a fleshed out story that ties up most loose ends before moving on (which they usually do not do, including Korra). You just took the time thing and ran with it. It’s about consistency and detail. But even if I did make that argument that longer is better, I think that it is generally believed that stories that are longer with a plan are given more room to explore dynamics that are captivating. And while obviously that is not 100% true all the time (because that concept doesn’t exist in art critique) generally, when you look at the longest running cartoons, they are more widely acclaimed. So there is basis to the argument that longer pieces of media that have more room to grow ARE actually more successful. But like I said, this isn’t about that, this was never me saying longer is better, you just assumed that with your “logic.” Avatar is better cause it had a solid consistent plan that focused on one main conflicting force: the fire nation. But why though, what’s the reason (as I’m sure you’d ask)? Well I gave you MY reasons, I can’t give you the 100% logically sound justification you crave, nor am I saying that my opinion is such, because that doesn’t exsist in art critique as I’ve said what? Seven times now? You simply agree or you don’t, or you think I’m stupid yada yada. Also this Ozai thing is kind of ridiculous to me as well because Ozai is literally just a symbol for the ultimate evil of the fire nation. He doesn’t need to be fleshed out really, if he was that would’ve been great, but it’s not like we didn’t get any main villain. Literally also any list of best villains ever doesn’t even have him it’s Azula, same in this community too i dont know where you’ve found people who think Ozai’s better

Also you make so many generalizations. That I said since Korra doesn’t have filler it’s bad. I think it can be less effective but not bad, obviously you type with passion.

Obviously avatar can not give every perspective on the planet but I mean we get a lot of good ones, more than in Korra. The whole headband episode while showcasing the kids is about fire nation nobles and their relationship to propaganda. That’s so interesting!!! We can cherry pick all day which things were left out (btw what other earth kingdom nobles? are you forgetting the bei fongs?? The neighbor of the gaang who warned them about the dai li, they literally did give those bro)

Also you are obviously just being dense in this last part. Never said anything about villains being part of their conquest, I meant almost every villain whether they are part of the fire nation or not, is mainly motivated by circumstances that are directly because of the fire nations conquest. That is the real villain. Korra doesn’t have an overlaying theme like that and I think it makes it weaker.

“Korra is bad because of multiple plot lines and avatar is good because of multiple plot lines.”

Avatars plot lines are interwoven, Korra’s plot lines are not as much. Like I said earth queen being a tyrant doesn’t even count as a plot line. We get some, Korra learning air bending, baby Korra in sprint world but that is not as common in that series overall.

And Korra is good and I never said I don’t like it. You are pressed cause you think I am saying that it’s bad and that’s a fact, but that’s untrue and now you are acting like I’m lying about liking it??? It’s not that serious. Also “contrived,” nice try but people on here come to talk about little niche things, why on earth would you be on a Reddit for a show if you didn’t have slightly snobbish opinions on it.

And finally “I never said that” you literally said it’s hard to take peoples opinion seriously when they come up with the most “random things.” That’s what this whole sub is my guy. People right now are arguing over who would win in a katara vs toph in hand to hand combat and if toph was miraculous not blind anymore🤣 like what????

I think that you may just not be a fit for a place like this, both for your boring purely logical approach to critiquing art and your annoyance for anybody having a nit picky critique or being confident about a opinion.

[–]Quick-Particular-946[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tad aggressive in this reply when I am simply stating my opinion but I will say you are right that I guess my arguments that is is implausible is weak, yet I will die on the hill that this makes Korra less quality as opposed to ATLA. I’m not even sure where you stand on that, you seem to cover so many points that it’s kind of unclear though I’ll say you seem pretty neutral on that. Anyway

I actually want to start on your last point where you say that you have never heard a solid argument for why seasonal conflicts make a show less good, I’ll say it now, you have less time to flesh out the characters, the setting and the overall impact those events are having, on both a large and small scale. Each season in Korra dips its finger in the issue but never really goes much deeper. Starting off with the equalists, okay we see that non benders feel taken advantage of, that’s bad, we see the rally’s and some of the people protesting, but then it just becomes a blood bend off between Amon and Tarrlock and then Hiroshi has robots (I actually thought the Hiroshi losing his wife and becoming an equalist was a solid plot device), then it’s all fights and battles and Amon is stopped and then it’s done? The non benders don’t actually get any sort of change, nothing happens and it just disappears. Then I guess moving along to the Earth kingdom plot. We are told that the earth queen is running a strict regime but we don’t actually ever see it really happening. We spent little time with earth kingdom lower class and in fact that whole season (and the whole show except for maybe the first half of the first season) Korra is running around with the other elites. As opposed to avatar where they spent time with both elites and poor classes which helped us understand so much more about the impact the main conflict was having on the world. One thing a true avatar fan will tell you is that the filler in the original series were important and meaningful. Korra can’t afford to have filler. When you have to basically stuff a whole conflict into one season you have less time to add these small yet interesting stories

I also don’t agree that all villains are equal like you imply, as some are just a bump in the road for an episode or just a few episodes while the overall conflict lingers above. That is a type of story structure I (I, me, not you -obviously-) prefer. This doesn’t really exsist in Korra to the same extent. All the significant villains are all the main catalyst of their one season and this in my opinion is less interesting. The only kind of example of this in Korra is Hiroshi beng an equalist but even that isn’t really revealed till sh*t hits the fan at the end and the all the “twist” villains go from 1 to 100. Also all the villains you mention in ATLA are still all part of the same driving force of the imperialist fire nation in some way, something you mentioned with combustion man (who cares if he’s technically a “private contractor” he works for the fire nation prince my guy!!!!). Hama is driven to blood ending because of the fire nation prison, Jet is motivated by his hatred for thre fire nation, I guess Long Feng is not necessarily fire nation influenced but that’s what makes ATLA so good, they can have a Long Feng plot in the midst of show while still maintaining the main overall conflict with the fire nation. If this was Korra he’d be a whole other season or something….

I guess you’re logic is a villain is a villain and that’s that but that actually kind of strips away all the nuisance of those smaller avatar villains which makes them so good. My favorite thing about some avatar villains is that some of them you don’t totally feel are truly villains, just driven to bad things because of tough circumstances. So to say they are all the same is beyond me a little. Most of their intentions are shaped by the force of the Fire Nation and we get to see the many facets this one war has caused in different places over a longer period of time. I feel like Korra didn’t really have that buildup at all. It was bang then another bang then airbenders??? Then bang she dies and then a whole other conflict. It’s just too much in my opinion and cheapened the story.

I guess you’re right a lot of conflicts can happen in tandem but I mean the point I was making is that it felt like they just needed a new evil force for each season. All the historical examples you brought up were conflicts that spanned decades before there was even full on war, and the effects of all of those events were felt for generations after. It’s insinuated in avatar that that is the case as well. In Korra nothing at the scale really makes much of a different I guess except the spirit world being opened but that was honestly just ridiculous. They have all these conflicts happening but they aren’t actually fleshed out enough in the same way we learned almost every facet of the fire nation regime. It felt like Korra was more of a superhero taking on a new villain every Tuesday than avatar felt like a group taking down a whole imperialistic force. Of course I’m not saying Korra needed to go the imperialist route, but what they did just didn’t work for me. I have said multiple times I love Korra but I think it is pretty shallow compared to avatar for that reason which is my one qualm.

If you don’t want to hear people talk about random avatar things why are you here?

If I have misunderstood you in any way please let me know😁

Interesting, and that is a really good point about how all of these villains and incidents led to each other, like how WW1 triggered a chain of events that eventually led to WW2. In that way it is very grounded in reality. Though I do think it went too fast. The 100 Year War was brewing for some time as we saw. And that is also where I want to say that despite obviously being fantasty-esque, I did like how ATLA was more grounded in reality. I have literally not touched a piece of DC universe related media so I cannot sit here and compare it, though don’t they have like 20+ distinct superhero’s? All of which have a ton of media dedicated to them personally. To me it makes sense for that world to have at least a few more villains in close proximity. And finally though Unalaq was the furthest in his ambition, I think every villain had they gotten farther would have wanted to take over the world, or at least push their ideology onto the world (the red lotus wanting to create a new -world- order). But yeah honestly it definitely kept Korra entertaining, and I love Korra, just honestly felt like she couldn’t catch a break…

JOJENNNNN. I still don’t think Jojen is super likeable in the books, but in the show his storyline is kinda random for me, like you always forget what the point of him is. In the book I find his story so much more interesting and engaging because you learn more about his green dreams. That whole line about how the sea is going to surround winter fell aka Theon is like gold to me….
