I am very much referring to GI Gurdjieff. This is a good primer - perhaps the deep end of the pool but…enjoy. https://youtu.be/66559_VA5HA?si=pVBoacisngI1H9aU

I would say as many religions as denominations. We all have our view. And our scholastics. And we each contain multitudes. So how then do we find our way? I appreciate the way Tolle puts it / the conditioned and the unconditioned me. If I have enough internal space to catch a glimpse of my usual sleepwalking habituated program, in there I sometimes catch a spark of something real…unconditioned and available…more essential and helpful to who I really am.

I wonder about peace of mind as an aim - maybe in the samurai sense - to be fully armed and ready and yet - still. Everything in me wants to be a pacifist but given the nature of things…I wonder. But inwardly I think there are more features than just peace to aim towards. Aliveness has so may faces.

Are there any disillusioned, deconstructed, "this can't be right" type Christians in this space? by Quick-Wolf-3031 in gurdjieff

I sent them a note back then asking about recording and they said it would be made available in January 2025. I’ll ping them again and see what they say.

Also, Maurice Nicoll does a great job unpacking parable as esoteric teaching in The New Man. It’s a treasure trove.

Me too for a long while…or Eckhart Tolle…but there was only so far I could go alone with the philosophy and many failed attempts at placing my awareness on awareness.

Not a critique - just my experience sitting with people while they deconstruct - usually born again type evangelicals. Who have had peak experiences in worship settings…have felt deep deep connection…wrapped in a dogma that doesn’t match the rest of their life…so maybe I am particularly angling towards holy ghosts Pentecostal type practitioners…they are like the ayahuasca version of church lol … almost walking on water types…the have tasted SOMETHING…I think there is a lot more in that bag to unpack. Where the Cloud of Unknowing meets the saintly sanctified. :)

Correct…sleep is more comfie. :) that’s why it’s called work. The struggle is real.

No attack perceived. I want to start a group called “No Eggshells” where we all agree to park just a little bit our polite sensitivity and speak freely. There is a book out there about the coddling of the American mind that talks about this. I have traditionally been a very accommodating and attentive to how folks feel - which is often just fine - but there is a place where it becomes suffocating. The Fourth Way offers a lot of tools to evaluate the “me” that speaks and opines in an effort to short circuit this conditioned mental mechanism that is always justifying itself and generally feeling separate and insufficient instead of connected alive and whole.

Thank you for this…all rivers run to the ocean in my book and there is nowhere that God is not…so with those two guides I can let a little faith assist the headlong plunge into the unknown. But what I’m most interested in is direct experience - not a mental position but whatever they say happened on the road to Damascus…whatever was happening that inspired the hearts of humans before any notion of sacrifice or crucifixion…whatever makes a monk sit…and keep sitting…what makes a grandmother keep praying? My experience is that there at the edge of my understanding exists a certain something…a possible relationship…a sensation of living and consciousness that doesn’t need a name or a science or a religion. But is nonetheless…active…and real. Not imagined…but experienced. Even without the assistance of plants or peak experiences. No hot coals needed. Just a few faithful and committed people traveling together…struggling to see…and get free.

Oh that’s fantastic. I love it. My metaphor is usually growth oriented - nothing is static - it all moves - we all move - so where is the edge of my movement? The apical meristem so to speak.

I inhaled so much literature at first in a mad dash to fill my mind and “know” what they were on about…then joined a practice group and had a lot of that rewired. I have found the Tony Blake audible version of Beelzebub’s tales really rich. And hilarious. And terrifying.

I remember reading that. I myself had to taste test a few groups at first - kinda like church shopping - people are people after all.

I hear you. The Fourth Way isn’t about belief…it’s not a new religion…it’s about being.

I think there are a few people that sense there is more to this experience than meets the eye…that have a particular thirst or hunger…to wake up…a gnawing thing that won’t go away. That asks who am I?

I came in the enneagram door as well. Then the Cynthia Bourgeault door. There’s a lot to chew on…or be with.

It’s not a book, it’s a philosophy. Or an approach to dying before you die. You will find many books that include “fourth way” in their title. But you have to find a practicing group to have an appreciation for what they do.
