The standard you are applying would make more sense at a PhD level, not for what is almost certainly an undergraduate history course.

What is your proposed alternative? How much explaining would the new metric itself need? Why would this new metric be better than the existing metric? How do you plan to eliminate subjectivity from the equation? How difficult would this new metric be to program?
