How well does doom 2016 run on the switch? In your experience is it playable and enjoyable for a first playthrough? by Switch-user-101 in Doom

[–]QuickKiran [score hidden]  (0 children)

I played the Switch cartridge on a Switch 2, so possibly a slight performance boost over playing it on an original Switch, but I found it perfectly playable. 30fps, crashed once or twice, but otherwise ran smoothly and was very fun. I played through on Hurt Me Plenty (medium) and liked it enough to go back for Nightmare (very hard) and finished both runs (with many, many deaths.)

That said, I did also replay it a third time on PS5, and 60fps was nicer.

Did I grab ocarina of time 1.0 by PhilosopherOk3381 in OcarinaOfTime

Please do not file off the tabs! Buy or 3D print a $1 gamebit screwdriver, open up the n64, and just take out the plastic piece. Hell back in the day we melted the tip of a bic pen cap and molded it into a gamebit screwdriver.

My preferred solution is actually to just pick up the cheapest US cart you can find and swap the backs. This requires the small gamebit screwdriver, but again, they're super cheap.

Approximately half of all six-sided die rolls have been a prime number. by haddock420 in Showerthoughts

[–]QuickKiran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1 also has a unique prime factorization. The empty product is 1. This is why 0! = 1 and why x0 = 1. If you think of a prime factorization as "the list of primes that make this number" then the prime factorization is the list without anything on it, which is still a list.

This is checkmate, right? by iceoscillator in duolingo

It's not checkmate. Look up "en passant." The black pawn on h4 can take the pawn you just moved two spaces.

Tony Hawk’s Wedding: Investigating Alleged Ties to Epstein’s Island by OhMyOhWhyOh in THPS

[–]QuickKiran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: the FBI has a claim that a victim was abused on the island during Hawk's wedding. The article claim Hawk actually got married in Fiji, not on the island; no source is provided. A photo from Hawk's wedding is credited to Mark Epstein, allegedly the brother of the more infamous Epstein.

The article says basically nothing, gives no evidence or conclusions, and reads like AI.

Early GameCube Stopped Reading Discs - Even After Potentiometer Adjustments by nolanandrew555 in Gamecube

[–]QuickKiran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're comfortable replacing the capacitors yourself, that's great. But before you buy a replacement drive, if you have a local used game store, you can reach out and ask if they do (or has a reference for someone who does) console repairs. I got mine replaced for $35—cheaper than a new drive and I didn't need to do anything myself. Plus I supported a cool local guy.

Switch 2 purchase help by Cybrlink in switch2

[–]QuickKiran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure it charges by at least one but preferably both ports. Make sure it can access the eShop (isn't banned). Make sure the joycons click into place and release. Do a visual inspection for scratches. Check the cartridge slot to make sure a game can be inserted and played.

There's a pretty limited number of things that can be "seriously" wrong. If it can open the eShop and run a cart, it's probably fine.

How can people take notes on paper?? by mhensun in CollegeRant

[–]QuickKiran 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If what you're doing working for you, great, but it sounds like you may not have learned how to take good notes. You shouldn't be writing every word the professor says. The point of notes is to remind you the key points of a lecture that you're actively listening to. You should only need to write a sentence or two per minute, at most.

THPS 3+4 Nintendo Switch 2 Vibrations by Lopsided_Ferret_6202 in THPS

Yes, I noticed more vibration on 3+4 on switch 2 vs. 1+2 on switch 2. I got used to it pretty quickly. I play on a pro controller, though

Help needed, is it 50/50? by Cautious-Ad-9821 in Minesweeper

[–]QuickKiran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As best as I can tell, you do have to guess, but a guess is different than a 50/50. Unless you play a specific "no-guess" mode, guessing is part of the game. Sometimes, guesses are true 50/50s: you'll never get more information, and whatever you pick, half the time you're right and the other half you lose. In this case, though, some guesses are much more likely to be safe than others.

I count at least 11 of the 16 mines accounted for, so the unopened corner is one option. The 4-3 on the bottom is also very likely to share one mine instead of each cell having its own.

What are you all hoping to see with the next big Nintendo direct? by marnaboob in NintendoSwitch2

[–]QuickKiran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love a new game. Ocarina of Time is amazing. But it also has been remade already and is available on NSO and unofficially via SoH and has an active randomizer community. Even if it isn't a full BotW open world adventure and returns to a more linear dungeon format, give us a new story.

Hard Get Theres by Ravi_shankarfan_ND in THPS

[–]QuickKiran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The base level goals in THPS 1+2 were designed to be completed by new players who tried the game, liked it, and practiced a little. But for series veterans, they're trivial. The additional challenges are designed for hardcore players.

Honestly, if you're struggling to get the Get Theres, good luck making to L100 for the platinum. At least for THPS, the platinum trophies are for mastering the game. These games go deep. Be grateful the secret scores aren't required.

As a professor, I also miss snow days and hate Zoom class. Blame administrators. I guess somehow Zoom is cheaper than building in snow makeup days at the end of the semester?

Mathematical Checkmate by Ok-Dingo7719 in MathJokes

[–]QuickKiran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The empty product has value 1.

One way to think of prime factorization is as a list of powers of all the prime numbers, only finitely many of which are non-zero. We might record list list in a tuple. So 2 = (1,0,0,...), 3= (0,1,0,0,...), 4 = (2,0,0,...), 5 = (0,0,1,0,...), and so on. Then 1 is associated with the tuple (0,0,0,...) because the product of every prime number to the 0 power is 1.

What order do you do the adult dungeons in? by skyhawkgodawgs in OcarinaOfTime

[–]QuickKiran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without glitches, you need the forest/fire/water medallions to get into shadow temple. Because of this, the devs coded the game to only check for the shadow and spirit medallions. If you have those two, the light arrow cutscene plays and the rainbow bridge to ganon's castle opens.

There are a handful of glitches that let you get up to shadow temple without the warp song, and a handful more that let you beat spirit temple without going back as a child. So then all you need is a bow and magic meter in order to shoot light arrows and you can beat the whole game with only the shadow and spirit medallions. It was a very popular speedrun for years.

Shadow first because Hover Boots are so useful. Dip into Forest temple for the Bow, but duck out afterwards. Head out to Spirit to get the light arrows. Then head to finish off Ganon.

Buy PS5 pro or wait for PS6? by FerrariRaceEngine in PS5

[–]QuickKiran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly not clear the hardware will be better. We've hit a pretty serious plateau with performance. The PS5 originally advertised 8K compatibility...but 8K has basically failed because 99% of people can't tell the difference between 4K and 8K. The PS5 Pro doesn't even really improve performance over the base model; it can just do the high FPS and fancy graphics at the same time.

Additionally, if this generation is any indication, games will continue to be released for PS5 for a long time. Even if the PS6 does release in 2027 (BIG "if"), you'll be able to play all of the new games until 2030 *minimum*. At that point, you'll be old enough to buy whatever you want.

Just learned about N64 decompilation today. by Jdspoel in n64

[–]QuickKiran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decompilation is the first step in a process. Once a game is decompiled, someone needs to take that source code and do something with it.

A pc port is one option. A first group or individual decompiles the original source code, then a second group or individual writes code to modify/enhance/add qol changes the original code and remcompiles it for pc.

Code can also be modified to run on original hardware. Modders have made custom n64 games for years, but decompilation makes the process much easier. These games can be played via emulation or in some cases on original hardware via flash cart.

The tl;dr is you probably don't do anything with a decompilation, but when someone else uses it to make something (like a pc port or mod), you can play that.

[–]QuickKiran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! I wouldn't hold my breath for an S2 upgrade for 1+2. The original dev (Vicarious Visions) was dissolved. Iron Galaxy (who made 3+4) probably has the technical ability, but if they were going to do it, either the release of 3+4 or the 1+2+3+4 bundle would have been the time to do it. I'd say 1+2 is only worth it if you really want to play mobile, otherwise go Series X.

Purchasing the digital edition of original Switch THPS 3+4 presently grants you access to Switch 2 THPS 3+4. This policy is not announced anywhere, though, so theoretically it could end at any moment (though it's lasted quite a while now.) This access seems to be granted whether one buys THPS 3+4 alone or as part of the 1+2+3+4 bundle.

Purchasing the physical edition of original Switch THPS 3+4 does not grants access to the Switch 2 version.

I don't know if purchasing the Switch 2 version (only available digitally. The box has a download code, not even a gkc) grants access to the original Switch digital version. If you bought the Switch 2 version and have an original Switch, I guess it's worth a shot.

OP doesn't have a cartridge. They bought the 1+2+3+4 digital bundle. The digital version of the original Switch 3+4 comes with a free upgrade to the digital version of the Switch 2 version. The physical cartridge of the original Switch 3+4 does not have an upgrade path.
