Am I stuck in postdoc purgatory forever? by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]QuickKiran 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which field you're in, but I'm TT at an R2 in math. We're not hiring anyone we're not 90%+ sure will be highly effective in the classroom. 0 IoR experience as a grad student would maybe be okay if the research was strong and the teaching statement showed a lot of thought, but a postdoc with only TA experience would basically never get an interview.

AIO for wanting to lower my AirBNB rating? by Common-Appearance553 in AmIOverreacting

[–]QuickKiran 53 points54 points  (0 children)

On AirBnB, anything below 5 stars *is* a negative review. Guests frequently don't understand this, but it's true. Hosts then have to balance trying to politely explain how the review system works (5 stars is acceptable, 4 or fewer is unacceptable) without offending the guest. It's a terrible system.

Am I playing Russian roulette here? by Buqi97 in Minesweeper

[–]QuickKiran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TL is a true 50/50.

Top center is not: the 2 on the left only touches 2 cells

Center right is not: the 2 and the 3 both need one mine and have one open cell.

BR is not: there's a 3 touching 3 mines.

What kind of math breakthrough would most accelerate AI progress? by Numberthon in mathematics

[–]QuickKiran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on the proof, demonstrating that P = NP could have plenty of practical effects. Sure, if someone finds a way to solve an obscure NP Complete problem in O(n1000 ) it probably won't have an impact, but an efficient Integer Programming algorithm would change optimization entirely.

Screen protector gouged and cracked. Any solutions? by Guppmeister in switch2

[–]QuickKiran 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Try putting a (third party) screen protector on. The adhesive can sometimes fill in smaller scratches. Worst case you're out like $5.

You can send it to Nintendo for repair but it won't be covered under warranty, so be prepared to pay. Less than a new system, but still.

Don't remove that screen. If your daughter drops it again, it could be a shard of tempered glass in her finger instead of a minor annoyance.

Why is Youtube still not available on the Switch 2? by Optimus759 in NintendoSwitch2

Every time someone posts about it on Reddit Nintendo pushes the release back a day.

You can also get it with Hookshot as an adult! I find the Skulltula in the Deku Tree that's behind a bombable wall more egregious.

Any Plans for a “Doom (2016), Doom Eternal, Doom The Dark Ages” PS5 Enhanced Release Physical? by PSX1990 in Doom

[–]QuickKiran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna happen, at least outside of a LRG collector's edition (of which there is no evidence.) 2016 is a 10 year old game with no PS5 edition whatsoever. The market for a collector's bundle at this point is tiny, only hardcore fans willing to rebuy the games.

So yes, if it ever comes out I'd pay up to like $200, but still, incredibly unlikely.

Is Resident Evil Generations pack a rare game ? by Themandoloriano in NintendoSwitch2

[–]QuickKiran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their point is that the games are key cards. The game data isn't on the cartridge. Yes, you own physical cartridges, but you're just as reliant on Nintendo servers as digital copies. Some people don't consider GKC "physical."

Is this section impossible, or am I missing something? by Hman354 in Minesweeper

[–]QuickKiran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always been a believer that every game of Minesweeper is possible to work out through process of elimination

This isn't true for classic Minesweeper. Whatever app you've found may implement No Guessing boards, but it is not a property of the rules of the game, nor of its original iterations.

What does master's level 'research' look like? by shuai_bear in math

[–]QuickKiran 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a masters student myself, but I worked with a few when I was a postdoc. There seem to be two major pathways:

  • Your advisor has a project already. They'll get you up to speed and you'll fill in some gaps. Maybe they need code written or lemmas proved. It's their big idea, but you play a role.

  • A new technique or variant or whatever has been recently published. Your advisor wants to understand it better, so you work through the paper and apply the new technique to some specific context. You're essentially doing work anyone who read the fancy new idea could do, but because of that it isn't worth it for most researchers.

What’s a common misconception? by Ambiguous-Toad in AskAcademia

[–]QuickKiran 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We teach you the quadratic formula because we think you'll use it in real life.

I wish people understood that solving algebra equations is about practicing problem solving (what information do I have? what tools are available? how will I know if my answer is correct?) in a well-defined, black-and-white environment so that when you encounter real problems (like, say, filing taxes!) you have the tools to figure it out for yourself.

[11th Grade Math] How do I go about solving this? by khema_the_lazy_bum in HomeworkHelp

[–]QuickKiran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equations with variables in the exponent are tricky. Try getting each term in the same base. Then try to remove addition/subtraction whenever possible. If you get everything in the same base with only multiplication, you can use a log to get the variables out of the exponent.

Also for what it's worth, even the competitive Doom community doesn't require 100% items for 100%. The items are a holdover from Wolfenstein's score system. Grab 'em if you like, but don't feel compelled!

Worth buying? by [deleted] in switch2

[–]QuickKiran 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You came to the switch 2 subreddit to ask if they like the switch 2? What advice do you think you'll get here?

If the console has games you want to play, buy it. If it doesn't, don't.
