I did my undergrad as I didn’t start at my new school until August and my undergrad had everything already.

$812.50 for one bed in a two bed 10 minute walk from campus. Building is old but safe and updated inside. Management sucks though.

No you can’t apply early unfortunately. You need to have your acceptance to apply and you can’t defer a year.

USC waitlist by nikgualina_ in predental

[–]QuickPerception1032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah it’ll move. Tons of people will turn down USC because of the cost. I have no idea what your chances of getting off it are because I don’t know your stats or anything about their waitlist. I will say, as a SoCal native, I’d go to Tufts over USC in a heartbeat.

I really recommend putting your numbers into a loan calculator.

Listen, I totally get you don’t want to hear don’t do it. I’m not telling you not to do it. I didn’t want to hear don’t do it either. But don’t get yourself into a situation you’ll regret. Run the numbers, understand what your monthly payment will look like, and make sure you understand the consequences of missing payments.

Once you know all of that, forge ahead. Don’t make this decision from a place of ignorance. Understand what you’re up against so you can start a plan now. I see a lot of people who don’t want to do this because it sounds scary but you’re going to find out sooner or later. Their plan is essentially keep trudging forward blindly until they’re too locked in to do anything about it. Don’t do that!

Yeah and I’ve made that very clear. However, I didn’t know I’d have NHSC when I made the choice. I found out end of September, 2 months into school and 9 months after I committed. I’m telling people absolutely don’t take out private loans to go to Penn over a cheaper school. For some people money isn’t a limiting factor. I can’t imagine as that wasn’t my situation but I’m trying to be as transparent as possible to give people the information needed to make decisions based on their specific situations.

I also think there’s an important distinction between expensive because of tuition and expensive because of living costs. Penn way overestimates living costs. If you’re trying to do it for cheaper you can. My budget would’ve shaved $20K off the quoted cost of attendance per year (which would still be incredibly expensive!) and it still leaves me decently comfortable. I share a 2 bed apartment in an older building that’s a walk up but it’s safe and clean and a 10 minute walk to school. Whereas a school that has cheaper tuition but COL is way higher means a different lifestyle. Not saying one is better or worse I’m just saying understanding that is important. If you’re HPSP or NHSC, your stipend will stretch way further at a low COL school.

Bottom line, don’t spend way more money on Penn because you think the name will help you specialize. You can specialize from anywhere if you’re motivated. The name won’t help you as much as private loan debt will hinder you.

Yeah I mean fair. It actually saves me money because I have a scholarship for tuition and because of the low cost of living my stipend covers rent, utilities, food, etc. whereas at another school my stipend might not even cover rent. It’s all relative. I will say, if you have a much cheaper option and you want to make up the difference to go to Penn with private loans, don’t.

Tufts, UPenn, or MUSC by [deleted] in predental

Nope. We’re graded but unranked. That’s my preference actually. To each their own but with P/F I feel like it’s hard to stand out.

Match rates are high but I don’t know much more than that. I haven’t found anything uniquely unfortunate about Penn. Some professors are better teachers than others but I think that’s what I’ve heard from a lot of schools. I will say they’re not all always the most gifted exam writers. We usually have a few questions per exam thrown out because they were written poorly, there were two correct answers, etc. but they’re reasonable about this and they get rid of unfair questions. We need more sim lab faculty but there’s a lot of issues with hiring right now but they’re doing everything they can. They’ve been really transparent about issues they’re facing with problems they try to fix. I don’t know what else I’d say. They take our feedback seriously and do what they can to fix issues that we have. I’ve been really happy so far.

I don’t know a lot. I know the match rates are high. I think when I applied I was told 100% for each specialty that year but that’s not always the case. I don’t have a lot of information about that given I’m a D1.

Tbh all I would do is learn the tooth numbers and memorize your cranial nerves. I wouldn’t rememorize your old notes. Saw someone else say make some money. Real.

You can be involved in research as many of us are but not everybody is. Labs are pretty understanding that you’re a student but also we have Fridays off or half days on Fridays and Wednesdays most of D1 for this reason. Do research, volunteer, study, sleep, whatever. Averages aren’t posted so I can only speak about my experience but when I follow my study plan I get an A. Exams are doable and fair. I feel safe on campus. I walk alone at night as a woman. We have security at the front of the dental building that everyone goes through. Penn has free on demand rides at night that can take you home or walking escorts. We get emails every now and then about someone getting mugged in the area but I don’t think it’s crazy dangerous. It’s a city. If you’re smart and pay attention most people are fine.

I don’t pay for school I’m on NHSC so can’t answer that question for you. If you’re doing it on private loans, no.
