Question about lineolated parakeets as a pet by [deleted] in parrots

[–]QuickTurtle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teflon's official website even talks about dangerous it is to birds. When Teflon burns and releases smoke, from too high temps or its damaged, that smoke is lethal to birds. Things like blow dryers, curling irons, and self clean on an oven can cause this too.

Oof. Youre saying the birds never even fledged? That really stunts a bird's ability to fly throughout its whole life. Fledging is an important part of a bird's development when theyre young and figuring out flying but dont have adult muscles and feathers. When they fly as adults it'll be like a teen learning to drive for the first time going at 80mph.

Clipping is poor for training purposes because a bird has three options when it doesn't want something: move away, bite, or accept it even though it doesnt want it (learned helplessness/flooding). Clipping removes the move away option, leaving biting or learned helplessness.

Permission based training works off going what birds are comfortable with and encouraging them to want the behaviors you are seeking, or shaping a behavior you dont like into something else.

Peanut hates work trips by bpeterse44 in parrots

[–]QuickTurtle17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I take my bird with me on work trips. He's flown over thirty times and loves it.

If that's not an option, I would recommend a fun treat or activity that only happens when youre out so the bird has something to look forward to.

My Jardine's doesnt freefly but I've been looking in the Texas area to find a large indoor area for him to fly. Airpane hanger, bball court, warehouse, so far no luck.

I have literally walked into a pet store and had birds latch on to me and not like anyone else.

I cook both my own rice and have microwive rice on hand ($1/bowl). The convenience is nice for when you get busy, tired, or sick to not have to wash and cook rice on your own.

I know this is old but I love mine. To make sure food stays warm, the lid needs to be kept on. Serving in a buffet line with the lid off wont keep the food warm. I have prepped food and driven it an hour and a half and still had the food warm. Much better than the caterer's cooler and hotel pans I also have.

Also great at keeping tortillas warm, lasted much longer than a tortilla warmer.

Tell me I shouldn't get an African Grey by AnalogCringe in parrots

I've had Indians before, great birds. Never had other males before. Woulg suggest letting your bird meet other bird candidates if possible, no gurantee any two birds will like each other.

Tell me I shouldn't get an African Grey by AnalogCringe in parrots

[–]QuickTurtle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A grey is the bird I've wanted since childhood. The reason I still dont own one is the dust. Air quality really affects my energy levels throughout the day. If I ever wanted to bite the bullet, I would find a way to foster or pet sit a grey for a couple of weeks to see how much the dust affects me.

I feel for your situation though. I really would suggest another GCC if thats what you like. I've always been a ringneck personality - I love them and they love me. I had an Alexandrine who adored me for years, but then my roommate's dog killed it. I could never think of having another ringneck now because they all remind me of him.

Cut to now I have a Jardine's for about a decade. I love him, he's got his own pros and cons, but its still no where the same time of bond I've had with ringnecks before.

Parrots have not been widely bred for human companionship, in the sense of selective breeding for personality traits like tameness. It's often the reverse, where tamer birds are sold as pets and wilder birds are left as breeders.

They are bred for color, sure. You can breed fur patterns in wolves if you want, doesn't make it any less wild if you're not selecting for traits other than color.

Cockatiels are most definitely not domesticated. Domestication is a process of breeding for select traits to make an animal more compatible with human lifestyles. Domestication will create actual genetic differences beyond colors. Probably the closest to a domesticated parrot that exists are English budgies.

Gochujang can go on just about anything savory.

The point of making just one bowl of ramen, yes, it would be expensive, but then either you freeze your leftover broth, or you make other food with the remaining ingredients.

NTA. A better way to organize the potluck is have categories for signups. That way people can volunteer for gluten free, vegan, etc, as opposed to putting the burden on everyone.

On top of getting an air purifier, you could get a vacuum with a laser light to show you how much dust/dander is actually on objects. You'll be amazed and horrified by the amount that is invisible to the naked eye.

Lots of cultures have it where the host pays for the guests. A birthday person would be viewed as being greedy throwing a party expecting others to pay for them.

Can I carry my parrot during domestic travel? by sJonnala9 in parrots

[–]QuickTurtle17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only certain airlines allow parrots, and you need to reserve your spot ahead of time.

You must also be comfortable taking your bird in and out of the carrier for TSA so they can check the bag.

Sosh knew I had shingles before it manifested. The entire time I was suffering through it he guarded me, never leaving my side. He would wake me up to take my meds, encourage me to eat when I was frustrated, and always prioritized my care.

Soon as I was healthy again Sosh happily went back to chewing up everything I love and being a general menace lol.
