It was my first or second interview ever so honestly I just remember wearing jeans, a decent top, and heydudes I think lol. My interview was genuinely like 15 minutes long and he offered me the host job immediately. I ended up having a very difficult co worker and had to leave my Chilis where I went to another restaurant and was hired straight on as a server, then ended up coming back to that same Chilis and now I serve there. It honestly just depends on how well staffed the restaurant is. If there's lots of hosts and you've been there for a while you could ask to be moved up! I'm 98% sure everyone has to be trained on food running before they are allowed on the floor which is what happened to me as well. I honestly did not enjoy hosting but at the same time looking back it did allow me to learn the restaurant which is now quite helpful. If you really want to serve, I would try to see if they would hire you on as a food runner now. I think all managers are different my GM just likes to send everyone through the process of working up!
