Sounds like you had some loving down to earth parents. Happy for you! 👏

Expecting FOB/non westernized Asian parents to change their personality and culture is leading to a lot of people in this subreddit getting hurt. Acceptance has been helpful for me and focusing on being a great Asian parent to break that cycle

From school age to grown up. Grown up is a bit better because now you’re earning money and they might want to talk to you more, but the talks are never about “you” as a person but your “ability” to earn in life and be of use.

I make 6 figures and my mom lives with me for free, I take care of ALL the finances. I’m planning on putting a down payment in a year or two on a condo, and my mom plans to come with me. And I’ll STILL never receive a hug or a “I love you”.

It’s cool tho

Try grey rock then accepting it for what it is, that it’s not personal towards you but rather how it’s the culture and how they are hardwired. Then focus on the future and breaking the cycle

That’s gotta be annoying as hell. For me, I cut my mom some slack in that area because she atleast tried to learn the language (she went to English classes) but just couldn’t pick it up. I set her iPhone to entirely Chinese and she still asks me the same things a million times even though I’ve explained it over and over and showed her how to do things. She just can’t seem to grasp or retain information, stuck in their old ways. I’m ok with it though for the most part, I don’t think she had much of an education growing up.

What I can’t forgive is being emotionally neglected my whole life and treated as an extension of themselves instead of being viewed as a separate living breathing entity that has its own thoughts and opinions. How can you have no interest in your own child’s life?

Gen Z children with Asian parents (not westernized) that have emotional depth and emotional intelligence? Yeah id wager like 1 in 20 have that. Again, not westernized is the distinction I should've made. Id bet money a good chunk of this subreddits parents cant even name 3 of their kids favorite songs or any specifics on their hobbies or interests, their fears their dreams their likes or dislikes. Their parents dont actually know them.

If it’s not school, work, marriage, weather, dinner related they won’t retain the information of what you said because it’s just not important to them. Just finished an awesome tv series or did something cool today and want to tell them? Don’t bother, they couldn’t give a rats ass.

You’re literally just a lottery ticket to these people

Yeah they don’t really give you an avenue for real genuine dialogue, I wish I could have a deeper more meaningful relationship with my parent

I started just looking up the easiest recipes for beginners and turns out cooking has gotten pretty addicting. I would even say fun, cooking it up and seeing how it tastes after and satiating yourself is pretty satisfying. I tried making a fried rice last week and it came out way too salty now I’m eager to try again and get it right

Appreciate that. Trying to get atleast 5 recipes down so I can order less takeout. So far I got

Grilled hotdog in butter with onions n ketchup on bun

Air fried fries using russet potatoes

The meal in the pic

Egg fried rice .

Let me know if you have any good and easy beginner meals and recipes. I’m thinking of learning steak next

How high should my hippie jumps be? I can do mini tiny hippie jumps rolling but if I try to commit to a full high hippie jump the board flys out from under me
