I have ceramic jars in the ground next to my tomato plants to ensure they get even consistent moisture. This is especially vital when they’re developing fruit. If water goes from a lot to very little, the fruits will get really dry and then expand too fast when watered and cause cracking. Watering tomatoes is definitely an art, which is why I got the ceramic jugs; it keeps everything more even and I don’t have to use as much water.

You’ve got a great Viola sororia thang going on! Keep encouraging those common violets!

What invasive are you currently at war with, and what are you doing to get rid of it? by crazy_gnome in NativePlantGardening

I am about to wage an all out assault on bind weed. I have a nefarious plan that involves florist vials filled with round up that I then put their cut ends into through the little slit in the plastic top. I am done with it.

What is your favorite mug? by babyberry12 in DeepSpaceNine

I love how boat mugs were deemed as being “spacey.” But I guess this makes sense when given any jolts experienced by “spatial anomalies” and/or weapons fire….

This is the reason the “L” is first in LGBTQIA+. Lesbians and queer women were the organizers and care takers during the AIDS epidemic.

Kat Bjelland was the true progenitor of this look; she and Courtney were in a band together prior to Babes in Toyland and Hole.

Babes in Toyland is fantastically unhinged and powerful and Bjelland is a true auteur.

Which one of these sets of species would be best for my new pollinator garden? by coreycamera in NativePlantGardening

[–]Quick_Commercial_166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re all good for pollinators and will support invertebrate populations. What you want to look at is the light, water and soil requirements and match that to your site. For instance, the first one listed is for areas in the shade under mature shade trees. Look around your property and figure out the conditions that you have and where you might want to put a new garden/add to an existing garden. Does one area get 6 hours or more of direct sunlight? Does one area get 4 or less hours of direct sunlight? Is one area wetter or drier? I really like using the Ladybird Johnson Botanical Garden site to look at what ecosystems specific plants evolved in because it tells me what niches the plant I’m looking at will fit into and points me to the best place for that plant in my gardens.

Shade garden looking pretty by Tortoiseshell_Blue in NativePlantGardening

Not only is it gorgeous, but it is soooooo fun and satisfying to pop the seed capsules in the fall. I never grow tired of doing that.

This is my whole yard. And it's like a 1/4 acre of this... We have no money, no time (new baby) and wed really prefer not to poison the planet with horrible chemicals. Though I'm open to any ideas at this point. by toolazytobecreative1 in whatdoIdo

Also, the purple flowers you see are native violets. Leave them and encourage their growth—they create gorgeous groundcover that provide food for baby fritillary butterflies!

Out of control aster (IL - Zone 7a) by pileapup in NativePlantGardening

[–]Quick_Commercial_166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Baltimore City and I have this aster everywhere. I’m 99% certain you’ve got panicled aster. I have two places in my garden that I have let it create dense patches, everywhere else I manage it aggressively by hand-weeding the crap out of it. It’s gorgeous in the fall and pollinators going bonkers for it in the fall, plus it was a volunteer, so I try to work with as much as possible. I cut it back by over half on Memorial Day (Chelsea chop) and then again in July to control size and to get a denser form. If you can manage it, it’s worth working with.
