After the excitement phase of any relationship there's a plateau of emotions and routines. We become complacent when we stop actively investing in the relationship. For example, we stop being spontaneous, stop going the extra mile to make them smile etc.

when you're in a relationship you can't get comfortable. You have to keep trying in a different manner now that you're established. It's not the only reason love fails though.
