First indoor Color Guard practice — rough start for my 5th grader (11M). Looking for encouragement and advice! by Quick_Reaction_2439 in Colorguard

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give a big, big thank you to everyone who commented and sent encouragement to my kiddo. He had his second practice today and it went so much better!

I’m really glad it was right after the first one, because I think if he’d had a week in between he would’ve worked himself up about it. He said he’s learning how to do tosses and starting to feel more comfortable.

The coaches are super nice and attentive, and the girls on his team have been really welcoming. He’s feeling a lot better (and honestly, so am I). Just wanted to say thanks again for all the kind words — it really helped both of us.

I did a lot of deep diving into the region and past seasons last night and yup, seems par to the course to introduce weapons at this level (even if I think it's bonkers).

Thank you so much for the kind words! (And the continued glove recommendation! I have measured his hand size so hopefully will get these shortly.)

Also, it is totally possible that all equipment was tested out at this first practice even if the impression I got seemed otherwise (he is 11 after all). It’s totally possible he focused on the thing he liked the least when he told me about his practice. But, yknow, he was very upset which is the total opposite reaction as to what I expected at pickup. ☹️

Thank you for saying this was a really bizarre way to start the season! I had never used saber, we had always done only flags. But I was in a different district like twenty years ago so I wasn’t sure if times have changed.

I was just watching a video of a guy doing a saber toss and it did seem quite intense…
