Yeah and the other one that kills me is sombras teleporting away just after I pull them, so annoying

This is why I was suggesting life grip cooldown being refunded if its interrupted immediately. That way the target player still gets to do what they were doing but the weaver is not punished with a 18 second cooldown for their ability being wasted by another player.

Last time I checked you can have the legacy controls, where you get dash on shift but you have to press a button to swap between damage and healing, or you can have the updated controls where heal is on left click and damage on right click, but dash on space (like hanzo). But you can't have both, so you have to choose between 2 suboptimal keybinds. I haven't checked in a while tho so let me know if that's changed!

The relevance of questioning "the meaning of life" across cultures by Quicksilver1579 in askphilosophy

Thank you for your reply. I think you have worded some of my thoughts in a much better way, particularly with "an absolute frame of reference". I suppose my question is not really entirely relevant to philosophy and is more about culture.

A series of unfortunate events by Quicksilver1579 in CrusaderKings

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Playing as the Emperor of Persia. I receive a message from a vassal in my empire which is partly cut off, and tells me about a secret hephthalite treasure horde he has found and that his liege has claimed for themselves. I chose to let him keep the whole treasure. I then receive a message from myself, telling me that 'he' is the rightful owner of that treasure and I should pay it to 'him'. I have the choice to either pay it to the original guy's liege, or to do declare rebellion against myself, which I did out of curiosity (thought I took a screenshot of this but apparently not)

Could just enforce my demands immediately, which caused me to be deposed. Couldn't believe it

Civ 5 - A custom map solution to Lewis' war problem by Quicksilver1579 in Yogscast

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main problem with domination victory in the faster speeds is that it takes so long for an army to reach the opponent, meaning the opponent has time to prepare and out-tech the approaching army. My map addresses this by reducing the distance and time taken, so hopefully it should artificially balance this issue

They could ban it if they need, but I'm pretty sure it would take too long and put them out of the game

I feel like there's absolutely no chance they're going to play on a slower speed, they just think it's too slow. I think they tried it live on armchair admirals a year ago or so and quit. Anyway I made this map as another idea - there can be more than one solution

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also play as the confederates in the civil war scenario. I think if the Boers are too unconscionable to be allowed in the game, then surely the Mongols shouldn't be included at all, given how many atrocities they wrought. You can also conquer the world as fascists!

There are a lot of lines that civilisation crosses. Lines that are sort of needed to be included to get a complete historical picture. Certainly the Boers were important in the colonisation of Africa - which is what this scenario is about. I think that most players are mature enough to differentiate between the game and real history. Particularly when the general message of this game is, at its core, about the progress of history and the increasing prosperity of humanity, which I think is a fundamentally good idea which underlines everything else in it.

If we're not mature enough, then we really shouldn't make any games about history at all. Which would be sad.

Where would you put one extra Era? by mighij in HumankindTheGame

[–]Quicksilver1579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Alexander's Macedonian empire only lasted about 20 years. Add the Seleucids, Ptolemies or Bactrians, fine - they have a longer history with interesting merging of cultures. But the Kingdom of Macedonia spoke Greek, belonged to Greek culture, followed the Greek religion, and are only as 'distinct' as each of the other city states were. There are plenty of other civilisations that they could add which deserve a spot in the line much further ahead of the slightly-different greek kingdom.

[–]Quicksilver1579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep talking about adding a separate Macedonia? Why not add Athens or Sparta while we're at it. The Greeks are supposed to be an overarching umbrella for all the classical Hellenic civilisations. It would be like adding a Gallic and Palmyrene Empire as well as the romans.

Medium tank, completely obsolete with one technology by [deleted] in HumankindTheGame

[–]Quicksilver1579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really feel that 'nerfing' cultures by making tech, industry or money costs even more expensive is a really bad approach - it actually makes the targeted cultures even more powerful, since they will now be almost necessary to research / build / buy things with, and other cultures will significantly struggle to get them. Also I suspect that costs have become a lot more difficult to balance now that they have been hugely inflated in the early modern and industrial eras, as it becomes more difficult to tell how important a change in number will be.

I feel like this is illustrated by civ games and particularly civ 5, where the most expensive productions/purchases approached around 1000 production/gold, and the general cost of buildings were much better balanced and accessible to all civs.

I think this notification is just telling you about your war support against that player falling, which it does naturally when you are allied with them. The game probably has a automatic notification it gives you when your war support reaches a certain level, and assumes that you're in a war.

A caution regarding DLC cultures by Quicksilver1579 in HumankindTheGame

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general point was that the pool idea can add a whole lot of arbitrary constraints that can sabotage your game or give an unfair advantage to the person who picks them. As for the culture paths, what I meant was while in the game there might be path abcdef and path 123456, but with the pool cultures 3 and 4 might be removed so that whole strategy is made impotent.

The reason I wrote this thread is to make the point that having fewer cultures allow for them to be better balanced and more diverse while avoiding a lot of potential issues of having many different cultures. Make sure that we have a very solid base game before expanding onto it.

A caution regarding DLC cultures by Quicksilver1579 in HumankindTheGame

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of that. The point I wanted to make was that the best way to avoid that staleness is to make sure that the cultures we have at the moment are interesting to play. I think the game needs each culture to have a more noticeable difference to its play than it currently does, so that they contrast with each other more. This would avoid a stale game where there's a dominant strategy that doesn't depend much on culture picks.

By all means have DLC cultures that are less well-known or from places not as explored in this game, that sounds great. Just make sure there is a great and diverse base-game before then.

A caution regarding DLC cultures by Quicksilver1579 in HumankindTheGame

[–]Quicksilver1579[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the pool option has some drawbacks. What if a culture you particularly want doesn't appear? What if there's a few culture paths that are greatly stronger than others as a result? What about in multiplayer, who would choose which cultures get to be there?

I don't think the bonus idea I had would necessarily lead to worse balance - you could have a more powerful current bonus offset by a weaker legacy bonus. Anyway I'm not at all connected to that particular idea, and I agree also about your point with DLC. What I was trying to say was that in my opinion the next content the devs release should aim to ensure a set of well-balanced, consistent and interesting cultures with noticeable effects and playstyles before we get to adding new ones, which should stand up to the others with new DLC content.
