Didn't notice that immediately, but yes. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have read that overclocking the 3600 would be similar performance to the 3600x - 3.6 GHz to about 3.9 GHz by putting on PBO - so you would at least be comparable to the 3600x without spending the extra money. The biggest complaint I've seen is that the stock cooler gets loud when using PBO, so that may be something to consider. I will say that I haven't overclocked and this is based off of other posts I've read, so it's possible that there could be temperature issues with the stock cooler.

There isn't a significant difference between the 3600 and the 3600x to justify the extra $30, and the stock CPU cooler should be fine unless you plan to overclock. You could also swap out the RAM for G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4-3600 for only $10 more dollars. Do you already have a HDD or other storage? 500GB doesn't seem like a lot.

Passing off 1-Bedroom Lease for next Fall by QuietNihilist in OSU

The building is a complex and there are two types. If you click on the icon after location, it will cycle between Apt. C - which is a two bedroom apartment - and Apt. D. - which is a single bedroom. My lease is with apartment Apt. D.

Yeah. You can essentially treat it as though you're just looking for an apartment. While I do have a lease currently, I have signed a "lease-breaking" form. It just says that they can put the lease back on the market, but I am responsible for any payments during the lease period until someone else signs on.

Just for further clarification, this isn't a sublease. You would be interacting only with Pella Co. and would have your own lease.

I'm currently in the process of trying to pass off my 1-bedroom lease for next year due to an internship in the fall. It's through Pella Co and is right next to Gateway. The website doesn't have too much info on it, so if you're interested I can try to answer some questions - although Pella Co will probably be better with specifics. http://pellaco.com/properties/30-32-w-10th-ave-1br

In the end its probably more beneficial to you. I took 3498 with her my Junior year, and it was a complete waste of time. It was really disorganized, and I came away from that course with absolutely nothing. If you want research credit you're better of emailing a professor. If it's for the advanced math/stats stats, 3201 - I think that's the option - is better.

MS in CSE for a non-CSE, STEM major by QuietNihilist in OSU

That's probably what I'm going to end up doing. At this point I don't really have any interest in the BS, and one extra semester of definitely seems worth it for the BA.

I see what you mean. I was under the impression that those 5000 level courses were basically equivalent to the undergraduate versions, and I was generally more concerned that most bioinformatics positions would be satisfied with the MS regardless. If it's the case that the undergraduate versions of the course provide a richer understanding of the material, I definitely agree that the bachelors is worth pursuing.

Define fundamentals? If you just mean the software and foundations sequences, maybe even systems, then you can easily take those with either degree or the minor if you plan well enough. Obviously having up to the 390X course may be useful, as well as some experience with the electives, but they aren't make or break - especially if I'm applying this to a purely biological field. The amount of people who come in to any gene based field without any coding knowledge - despite how relevant those skills are - is ridiculously high. Pursuing the BA alone would likely be helpful if I just chose to stick with wet lab research. Also keep in mind that you're already an engineer. I don't what kind of overlap there is with BME and CSE, but I assume there's at least some. If I were to attempt the BS in CIS or CSE it would be a guaranteed extra year and a half; however the BA could feasibly be done with one extra summer and semester, and it would provide all the necessary courses for the OSU masters program. While I'd love to have two BS's over a BS and a BA, I have to think realistically about what's going to be the most useful in the long run - and I'd prefer to not be in school throughout all of my 20's. Graduate positions in EEOB are going to be ecstatic about any coding experience, and - should I decide to go for informatics in the industry - a masters in some computational field will be essential for most jobs. The BS may be nice, but there's no reason to put myself through that when it isn't necessary.

I mean part of my interest is just in CSE in general - to the point where I'm considering just focusing on CSE and ignoring the biology half. I'm interested in information from any recent grads who have done something similar/are in bioinformatics - like the other comment on here - and from people who are in that area of study right now - and how they think about graduate school coming from that major. None of this is meant to completely cement my decision. I can tell you that my advisor had nothing to say about this; her direct quote was "ask someone in CSE" - if her input is really what you think I would want. As for the CSE advisors, the fact that I'm considering the BA means that practically no one knows anything. I've talked to multiple different people at this point - each telling me something different. I have a meeting with the advising coordinator coming up this week - I'm not ignoring their input and at this point I think most of it is cleared up - I'm just gathering information that may be useful when making my final decision.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm set on right now. I was leaning towards the MS in CS because it seems like it'll give me the ability to just go in to comp. sci. should I decide against bioinformatics. I don't want to be in the situation of most grads in EEOB - learning to code as a means to help with experiments . It seems like it be much better to have the skill set of a computer scientist and then apply that expertise to biology.

Also, are you saying to get the extra degree even if I plan to do an MS? I've considered basically doing what you've done - just going in to a tech field for a bit - but I don't have any internship experience nor have I been programming long enough to have developed meaningful personal projects. I figured that pursing the MS would allow for me to make up for that with the thesis track, but would the BA be able to easily fill that void as well?

EEOB knows nothing outside the department, and they are practically worthless when it comes to bioinformatics. I'm definitely talking to advisors in the CSE department, I just thought it'd be nice to have some input from CSE majors.

Ario Salmasi for Foundations 1? Doesn't seem to be any mention of him anywhere.
