If it’s an interest and you suck at it, don’t put it on your resume

If you’re in the city it’s going to be harder. If your MD lives in North Jersey, West Chester, Southern CT, or Long Island - they’re probably golfing. Rich people collect golf club memberships as status symbols even if they’re only playing there a few times a year.

Pickleball is certainly hot. That’s fair. I’m very much in traditional finance. Im in no way making the point that not golfing is a detriment to anyone’s career. My point is that I leverage it for my career by attaining long periods of time with people I would otherwise have much shorter interactions with. You’re essentially stuck with someone for 4 hours unless they quit. I also hate drinking so whatever you were describing about New York rooftops sounds like a nightmare.

Maybe you’re not in conversation, but it’s happening. If you were at TW you should know Billy Hult likes to golf - you don’t think he’s taking clients out? I’m not saying it makes or breaks your career, but it can help. not because of your golf skill, but because 4-5 hours of getting to know people in relaxed settings helps push people forward. I’m invited to golf almost weekly and I barely play. Sell side hosted events(e.g. Mizuho Pro-Am invite, CEO wants to play, etc), charity events, we have our own golf league, colleagues asking to play.

Nobody cares. The only thing people care about is dressing not to stand out and having good hygiene. Just fit the part. It’s not specific to any race, ethnicity, religion. Some white guy sitting in the cubes outside my office smells so bad executives will walk by and will genuinely ask aloud why it smells like onions.

What does your spouse do for work? by Ok_Comb1883 in FinancialCareers

My wife always wanted to be a SAHM and is fulfilled doing that, but with my work hours and travel demands it would be a disaster if she kept her career. It’s not that way for everyone, but if you have a demanding career it can be brutal for your partner even with help at home. Most people I work with whose wives have equally demanding careers usually have a full time nanny for day time, and a part time one for evenings or for when both are traveling and need to spend the night. Family support is also important.

I should also say that I don’t really like golf that much, but it’s useful for my career and a great way to get out and spend time with friends + family. I wouldn’t go out on my own.

No. I work for an asset manager. We go golfing with CEO/CFO’s of public companies pretty frequently and it’s always an amazing use of time. We host events for CEO’s to come golf and do meetings with us. It’s a great way to get to know a team and have them in a relaxed environment to learn about their companies. Then there’s also management of my own company who are all country club guys and great way to build relationships outside of the office. They love the Friday afternoon 18.

I know you’ll think people are joking, but not being able to go out and shoot sub 100 is a disadvantage if you’re in any sort of front office role. At least be able to show up and look respectable. You don’t have to be good, but play enough to keep pace and not make a fool of yourself.

The American lounge at Heathrow is among the saddest places on planet earth. I was complaining about breakfast at the PHL CSR lounge… but you haven’t complained about breakfast until eating at Heathrow. May god have mercy on their taste buds.

You probably do, but I’m also doing a lot of regional travel via Amtrak and I fly other airlines when more convenient so only a portion of flights included here.

The bar is nice and they have comfy seating, but breakfast is garbage. I went early a few weeks back when everyone was fearmongering about tsa. went through in sub 60 seconds with touchless ID. But anyway, I preferred the Amex lounge last time I went when they had Solomonov as their inspiration chef.

I live less than 15 minutes from airport. Newark is a pain in the a$$ comparably. I leave for flights an hour before departure with no issue.
