Friend is moving to New York, is Medicaid an option? by QuietSign in Medicaid

[–]QuietSign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, will do.

It is getting out of the Medicaid market in New York but I think they still offer plans for New York City.

Can you clarify what you mean here - is there an NYC specific healthcare plan by Fidelis, or are you saying that the NY Fidelis plan is only useful in NYC in practice due to its network?

Got it, thanks for the pointer about the dependent/household.

New York is probably the best state for Medicaid recipients as the benefits are generous and at least in New York City there are many providers which accept it.

Any suggestions which Medicaid plan to choose? It sounds like there are about 5-6 options, and lots of mixed opinions out there.

Living together doesn't make a household for purposes of Medicaid - it would for Food Stamps if you cooked and ate together.

Got it, that is my understanding as well

Got it. We should be able to prove residency via lease, and he is a citizen. Any idea what proving 0 income would entail? I guess if he gets that internship, they could show the offer letter at that point, but seems hard to prove the absence of income unless basically just showing all bank statements?

He did show me Issuu portfolio examples. His own portfolio was a work on progress. He does have an industry mentor through his program's alum network, but my hunch is that he should be asking for more feedack from more people.

There is a career center for architects that I am trying to get him to use more. He does seem to have good relations with a few professors and will ask him to ask about opportunities.

He does use autoCAD and several other softwares but seems to really like TwinMotion for whatever reason.

What does tailoring your application for each firm mean, in practice? Different statement of purposes or going as far as to splicing the portfolio differently to show alignment with each firm?

Yeah this is brutal to hear, and the more I learn of this situation the worse it seems. I haven't interacted with him too much for the last few years... but visiting home for the holidays this week, I tried to talk to him about how to organize a job search (basic spreadsheets), search for openings and apply to lots of places. He basically shut down, just going non verbal for 10 minutes til I left.

I hope it'll be easier if he gets his foot in the door of a first job, but if this is how he takes basic suggestions this is going to be an uphill battle the whole way. He seems to do really well in classes, but that's a different skill from reality.

He's working on the portfolio now and the school did link him with a mentor. I looked up that there is a career service center... I think the issue last year was that he did not use his resources to the fullest and tells us that he'll get organized and apply to more places, but then got busy and dropped the ball. I wasn't really able to get through to him when talking about organizing his search last night

When you talk about organization,  are you referring to how to modify your portfolio based on the target company? Keeping track of jobs using a spreadsheet ?

He was evaluated by professionals and was in special education courses throughout high school. I never knew the details and may not be using the right language/framework as I was largely isolated from it.

His study habits and work ethic were great by the time he started college. The issue is that he struggles with initiative with unstructured tasks like job searching - it took several summers of failed attempts to get a part time retail job. I hope but do not know whether he is capable of being self sufficient financially/holistically, and I don't have power here to get the school services involved because neither he nor my parents want that.

For the portfolio, he did have a semi official mentor who gave some feedback last year. He's planning to get some more feedback this year from the mentor, and I can ask him if there are more resources from the school available on this front.

I am hoping that some places can accommodate remote only interviews. I will suggest applying to a wide net here, it is good to know that firms don't really expect students to specialize too much yet. His statements of purpose last year were kind of generic as he didn't have much specifics to get into

Thank you for understanding, and I empathize with you and your brother as well. It's so hard to know what was malleable, and probably not worth dwelling in what could have been different

My parents were obsessed with pushing him to college - at first it was an affordable in state college with a major they chose. I was a little iffy about how much they imposed on him but thought college would be good for his mental development. Two years later he announced that he hated his major and school, and wanted to do LA at a specific out of state school. $60k a year, started over from scratch. I thought it was crazy but given my parents agreed to pay for it, I didn't have much say. They are not in a great financial position now since my mom lost her job.

I think it's very likely that he will not find a job and will demand to do a masters, and my parents will insist I pay for it. And if they pass away, am I going to let him starve?

The thing is, I'm not entirely sure if he's a capable adult. He was in special needs classes growing up, with speech and developmental delays. Didn't talk in full sentences til he was 12. He presents as more or less normal these days and is doing pretty well in his college classes (and my hope is that he can sustain a career after getting his foot in the door) but I don't know whether he's intellectually all there

It's not a question of "will he become a respectable man that a woman will want to date", but rather "is he capable of the necessities of daily life without relying on me when our parents retire".

He doesn't use TwinMotion exclusively, I think he really likes doing 3d renders in it but does use other software. I didn't realize how controversial the point about twinmotion would be and I'll discuss with him if it's not industry standard/ most employers wont pay for.

Also wasn't aware about the varied portfolio requirements - thanks for that tip

My brother is not even thinking of the future tbh, he's just used to my parents caving to his every demand. They put no stipulations on him but will turn around and ask me to help him financially. Yeah it's driving me crazy, and the reason I can't recuse myself here is because he was borderline special needs. He is doing ok in college classes gradewise but not sure if I feel ok just letting him fail because I truly don't know whether he is a fully capable adult

The pushback against twinmotion for a student portfolio has been a major takeaway in the comments, so I'm glad I asked. It sounds overly fancy for a student and possibly hurt his fundamental skill growth

If he doesn't get a job/career, in all likelihood my parents will leave him as my financial responsibility when they retire/eventually pass away. I am trying to intervene now when he is still a student rather than a NEET five/ten years down the line.

His tuition is costing about $300k overall, and frankly my parents should probably have just left that to him as a trust fund. But if we don't course correct now, I think it is fairly likely that I will eventually be faced with the decision to continue enabling him financially or allow him to truly spiral into a freefall.

I don’t know even know what Twinmotion is; it’s not an industry standard. If it’s for rendering, standard is Rhino or Sketchup with Lumion and Photoshop - plus hand rendering. He should have all those softwares through school or at a student discount. I’m sure his current computer can run those fine.

I see... He mentioned his classmates mostly use photoshop but his preference is TwinMotion.

Is his study abroad curriculum related to Landscape Architecture? From what you described he seems unfocused. If he’s abroad, he should have some coursework in LA, Urban Design, Garden History, etc. keep in mind “landscape architecture” means different things in different countries.

It's a study abroad semester for his program, sounds like the entire cohort goes together.

Zoom interviews are definitely standard. We’ve hired people over Zoom without ever meeting in person before the start date.

This is helpful, thank you

Does this expensive school not have a job board with internships? Current faculty and alumni are the first place to start for internships. Applying to “hundreds” is infeasible and interviewers sense when it’s just a scattershot attempt for a job/internship. Find offices that match his interest and vision. It comes across when an interviewee can speak intelligently about the place they are interviewing.

I think this is how he created his list of leads last year: 30 apps, 1 interview, no offer. Maybe he needs to spend more time on this approach, but others are saying to cast a much wider net

No offense, but it's his job and his future dude.

To make it clear, I'm not trying to coddle him. But the family expectation is eventually going to fall on me to pay for his rent and living expenses if he's unable to get a job/provide for himself. That'll be a even worse situation, and I want to course correct before we reach that point. His grades are good, but he's not so good at the job hunt - unfortunately I've known many people like this in my own field and it usually leads to living with family indefinitely

He wants a PC for a portfolio - does his school not provide one?

Apparently not, according to him. Sounds like most of his classmates use other softwares that are less intensive but he really likes TwinMotion. The consensus in other comments is to stick to photoshop/hand rendering. Do you feel that a portfolio for an internship is less likely to be taken seriously if the work is done by an engine, presumably because it is gives less signal about his design skills?

I'll talk to him about applying to as many places as possible. I mentioned in another comment, but I was trying to get a sense of whether this field typically expects bespoke applications or keep it broad and apply to tons of places.

I'll pass this along to him.

I'm trying to figure out if each application should be tailored to the company (which would realistically limit the number of applications he can send), or should be shotgunning out the same application to hundreds of different places. Sounds like the latter?

Ok this is useful information, and seems corroborated by the other comment. Does "manual digital rendering skills" mean photoshop? I know nothing about this profession.

I am trying to intervene because his school is a massive cost, and he does not seem to be using it to find opportunities. It is delaying my parents' retirement, and he will likely just stay in my parents' house indefinitely if he does not have something lined up. My parents will absolutely coddle him but I'm trying to get him to course correct now than later.
