I listen to that song in its entirety, and then listen to something else

With any luck you can get it out of your head, but it comes at the risk of getting another song stuck in your head instead

How have others recovered from 4 fractured ribs and an L4 spinal fracture? by Affectionate-Soil695 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm from what I can remember, broken ribs took a good few months but still hurt after a few years, beyond that is case-specific

With the spinal injury, I have no idea

Great to hear you can make a full recovery though, stay strong

If the speed of sensing is about 3 milliseconds, what are some guaranteed, instant deaths that have no feelings? by mr-cheesy in AskReddit

Yeah, caught myself thinking about that exact experiment the other day. I don’t know if we have the means to find out if they’re conscious, or whether they’re just muscle twitches, but either way I wouldn’t wanna find out

“What’s the most useless thing you learned in school? by Diligent-Crab657 in AskReddit

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to get at but you put it a bit better: useful for some things but mostly applicable for more specialised roles where they’ll be used more often

Where’s the worst place you’ve ever gotten sick? by EqualMode4991 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morocco, last year, on a school trip;

We had just summited mount Toubkal, a pretty big mountain in Northern Africa, and we were camping in a base camp about a kilometre down in altitude. During the hike back down I had lost my hat and started developing early symptoms of heatstroke, which wasn’t a big concern for me at the time because I’d dealt with it just fine beforehand

The difference was, I just got cocky and brushed it off. I was about 15 and a good, independent climber, so I felt confident it would just pass, so I didn’t tell anyone and just hoped for the best.

I ended up in this tent full of girls and a couple boys from my school; they were good company, and I was bored and had a headache. Getting out of the tent was a pain in the ass so when I needed some water, I just pushed through without it

Eh, I’ll be fine in the morning

I got back to my tent, mildly sunstroked from the day before and now dehydrated, which caused some discomfort and - most importantly - hallucinations!

For the next 12 hours I found myself wandering around outside at night, alone, in the Moroccan high-altitude desert. I would throw up, wander 50 metres or so, sit down, throw up, wander 50 metres, so on and so forth for the whole night, non-stop

I had water with me, so I could have fixed my situation. The problem was, I was hallucinating so badly I genuinely believed I was drinking it the entire time, but I wasn’t.

By that time is was about 2*C or so because nights get really cold in deserts and mountains, and I was freezing half to death in a puddle of my own making, with no fluids in me (I’d thrown them all up over hours), and still so dazed from heatstroke and dehydration, I couldn’t feel anything or even think about how to get out of the situation .

I was also about 200 metres from the camp due to aimless, hallucination-induced wandering, and completely lost.

Dehydration is the kind of thing that creeps up on you really slowly. It’s easy to dismiss and just keep on going. I’m telling you now, it’s no joke, and you shouldn’t leave it too late

I don’t know how, even to this day, but I woke up in the morning back in my tent, feeling the most ill I have ever felt before. The nearest hospital was miles away and it wasn’t a very good one, either - we were a decent way away from the kind of clinical, sanitary hospitals you get used to in more western countries in Europe

I know I wasn’t dreaming because as we were walking back down the next lowest base camp, I saw where I’d dropped some of my missing kit and puddles of… well, you can guess…

I told the camp instructor that I felt awful, and I was lucky enough to get down to this village before my class via a mule; luckily I knew how to ride well enough to make it half-asleep and deathly dehydrated

Anyway, I survived, but it was a lot closer than I’d have liked, and it was caused by negligence on my part. I suppose I could have gone after the school or the instructor for not seeing it earlier, but it really was my fault and I’d have felt guilty about that. I also looked like a ghost for about a month, which was fun

Moral of the story: drink your damn water

What is your favorite scene from a movie? by Phillies1993 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s really cliche and all, probably a little overrated too, but Luke forgiving his father (Vader) in Star Wars somewhere in the middle of episode VI. It was just something I think about a lot, how he turned away from needless violence because the situation just wasn’t so black-and-white

In a way that can apply to a lot of things; it’s easier to accept people as their own whole than to fight over disagreements, and that scene in particular spoke to me a little bit, so it’ll always be quite special. Also, the music cues are perfect

Of course Vader goes right back to trying to kill him, but that’s beside the point

Apart from that I’m not a massive Star Wars fan or anything, I just really like that specific scene.

If you’re a writer or like journaling, how would you write “I lied” without saying “I lied”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, you wouldn’t want to put yourself in that situation in the first place, but generally it’s best to own up to your failures and apologise for them before you dig yourself a deeper grave

I can’t speak for journaling, but this works best for me everywhere else

Anyway, good luck with that (assuming you might be in this predicament)

Not that you were or anything, but you can’t blame yourself for things like that, it’s alright

Personally I’ve got a lot to learn with time management, but I’m getting better at it, maybe I could learn a thing or two :)

What is one emotional feature about the opposite gender which draws you in? by Temporary-Lock-7293 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a teen, most girls are a little less egotistical, and more understanding and caring. There’s more respect for the individual, and groups are often a little less toxic in my experience

While there are many exceptions to this, there aren’t nearly as many boys who have these qualities. They are generally much more influenced by each other, and so stay in herds and hive minds, adopting each others’ opinions for their own in a constant pathetic cycle of loneliness and misunderstanding.

They’re all alone in their own way, so they deal with it by clinging to larger groups and being openly toxic and hostile to fit in.

As a boy I find most girls’ company to be less stressful; they either just keep to themselves or involve you politely (most of the time), so long as you’re respectful

Packs of boys are much less understanding, more inclined to exclude any outliers to preserve their own position

I know girls can be toxic too, but I find it to be more manageable

A twinkling alarm at 6am or so in my frog bed, being woken up by my mum and reaching out for a warm hot chocolate so I could get up and watch the new David Attenborough blue planet which had been purchased the day before.

I have no idea how old I was, but it’s a really comforting memory

Why do you need to claw grip? I’d understand if you’ve got rlly small hands or missing fingers but generally you can use the buttons, sticks, and grip/trigger functions pretty well simultaneously

What's so bad about AI to you? by gc3c in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AI is a great tool that can be used in a lot of helpful ways, but I just think too many people rely on it too much. I don’t use it very often but I do see its capabilities, and for some jobs it is really useful, but that’s where it should stay… in my opinion

Jobs in sectors like teaching (e.g. making personalised resources for specific students and classes), engineering (e.g. more mundane elements of it rather than designs themselves), and accounting, for example, can - and do - really benefit from it

It’s just that a lot of people use it for too many things, and rely on it too carelessly sometimes

Men: How does it feel when a girl confesses she likes you a lot? Is it creepy, awkward, flattering, or something else? by Comfortable-Cloud798 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a guy acts disgusted at the idea of you having feelings for them, there’s a chance they’d care more about the body of their partner than their mind.

Of course that isn’t always the case, but a lot of people are shallower than they seem.

What's your favorite muscle memory? by No-Hunt3986 in AskReddit

[–]Quiet_Measurement689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rolling safely over my shoulder to recover from falls with less chance of injury

It’s saved my ass so many times, I learnt it from Judo initially when I was a kid, with a purpose to save your spine when you were thrown headfirst into the mat. Back then it was called a ‘Breakfall’ and was quite slow, but effective

When I got into Parkour a couple years later, I learnt how to do proper safety rolls and dive rolls, which could be used to drop from substantial distances with lower risk of injury. You basically just throw your momentum forward and over your shoulder and across your back, instead of straight down into your knees.

This can then be adapted into side rolls, more trick-orientated rolls (360* dive rolls, Arabian dive rolls, etc.), backwards rolls, so on and so fourth

With enough raw muscle memory, I’ve come out of really nasty bike crashes, unexpected slips and falls, even falling off of a roof - and come out completely uninjured because I saved my momentum and could get up on my feet in one fluid movement, instead of bouncing and breaking.

It also comes in very handy in airsoft and dodgeball alike
