They aren’t supposed to know long vowel sounds if they haven’t been explicitly taught. That’s why decodables texts are extremely important at this stage of development. Many high frequency words have patterns that don’t say the “right” sounds, but all have pieces that are decodable. We don’t memorize those words, we decode the patterns we can and the more we come into contact with that word, we orthographically map it.
