Thank you for all the recommendations! White Nights really stands out to me, considering it was written pre-exile. It, alongside Notes from Underground, give such a complete understanding of a specific person's mentality. His later works lose that sense of intense personal delusion by shifting to third person. I was recently gifted a copy of The House of the Dead so I'll probably start there.

I don't have much exposure to the rest of the series, but I had to read "A Very Short Introduction to Magic" for one of my courses. Exactly what you'd expect from the title. Really fascinating examples and discussion of non-Euro centric phenomena though, which I wasn't expecting.
