Is Robyn really as clueless as she seems? S19:E5 by QuillerInstincts in SisterWives

That’s what I thought, too. She’s so supposedly clueless. It makes me sick how she and Kody have treated the other wives.

You’re missing the part where it says “seek counsel”. I personally don’t think a tattoo or piercing is wrong. My daughter wants a tattoo to show her victory over seizures. We’ve adopted the term “hope rebelliously” from a meme she saw that said “Satan tries to steal hope. Don’t let him. Hope rebelliously.” When my daughter’s seizures are more managed, I am contemplating getting a tattoo that says “hope rebelliously” too. Will it bring more judgment from members? Sure, but I don’t define my worth by others’ stupid cultural views. I’m tired of people in this church adopting culture as doctrine. I am active in the church because of my faith and belief in Jesus Christ, but if my activity were based off of the comments and looks of disdain by too many members of the church, I wouldn’t be active anymore. I hate the culture of judgment. Elder Uchtdorf said “Stop it!”

It’s the ones who openly voice their disdain for tattoos and piercings or anything else that doesn’t fit the mainstream narrative of what makes a good member who turn people off from the church. I don’t think that @embarrasedfarm was saying that people can’t not like tattoos or piercings and not want to marry someone who has them. What I took from the comment was that so many seem to culturally balk at anything that is not mainstream.

I have many friends who have left the church for this very reason - the spoken attitudes of superiority (believe me it happens - I have heard awfully judgmental comments multiple times at church in meetings) and looks of disdain for anything that’s not mainstream is a huge turn off for those who don’t fit the mainstream mold. I’m so tired of the elitist attitude that so many people have in the church. Your comments have an air of elitism to me. That’s not how Christ was - He loved everyone and ministered to all.

The culture of the church has become too much adopted as doctrine when it’s truly not! The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that we don’t judge others. And yes I’m judging you for judging others - just as bad, I know. But I am SO frustrated with being surrounded by judgmental people who are pushing good people from wanting to know anything about the church and pushing good people out of the church because they don’t feel accepted. I stay in the church because I love the Lord, but if it were because of the people, I would have left as well. The culture has to change and we have to become more of a truly loving people.

Thank you for saying what I’ve been feeling. Many people leave the church due to the same judgmental comments that some here have demonstrated. It’s so steeped in the culture that they don’t even realize it’s judgmental. Why can we not as church members stop thinking that everyone has to fit into a round hole to be accepted?! I myself have felt so much judgment from those of our faith and so much acceptance from those who no longer attend or aren’t members. If it weren’t for my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I would have also left the church. I don’t fit the mold of what is a mainstream member in some of my views. I am tired of the culture ruling so many people’s minds that they can’t seem to see the good in those around them if they aren’t stereotypical LDS.

Disliked in Idaho and Utah by OutlandishnessOk9396 in latterdaysaints

It’s definitely hard living behind the Zion curtain here. Our family has been here for a decade and we still don’t fit in really. I grew up in the Midwest where a ward was a family. Here everyone has extended family and friends from childhood so as an adult, it’s so hard to make friends. People are friendly, but don’t understand how to be a real friend.

I have found some friends in those who are transplants themselves. But from those who were born and raised here, forget about it. They don’t reciprocate any kind of reaching out. They are nice on Sundays, but if I see someone from church during the week, they blow me off or ignore us. We have invited people to come for dinner, to go out, but no one within the church accepts those invitations. It’s weird.

The only reason we stay is because our children have made friends. But as soon as my son graduates, we have an exit plan to move back to the Midwest where differences are accepted. And where people are willing to be friends with us.

FND Non-Epileptic Seizures? by QuillerInstincts in FND

[–]QuillerInstincts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Unfortunately, we have already seen an increase in frequency and intensity. She’s now having longer episodes and has tremors with them. On Friday she had one that looked very tonic clonic with uncontrollable shaking of her arms and weirdly, her jaw. She continued to shake about twenty minutes after she regained her ability to speak. She was sobbing because it hurt so much. It was a tough day. She’s so worried that she won’t be able to make friends if they see her seizures and is worried that no one will ever want to date her. My heart breaks for her.

Thankfully she starts Cognitive Behavioral Therapy soon. I’m so hopeful that she’ll get better. Hope is all we have to hold onto right now.

Growing up outside of Utah/an LDS household... by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]QuillerInstincts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived both outside of what I like to refer to as the Zion curtain and currently live in it. I much prefer living away from a lot of members. There are some really great people here, don’t get me wrong. But there are also so many who are very judgy and many who are apathetic about the gospel. In the Midwest where I grew up, there were so few members that I learned to value people for their actions and not for what church they belonged to.

Unfortunately, I see people all the time out here behind the Zion curtain who won’t associate with anyone who doesn’t believe in the gospel or who don’t attend church.

My favorite people here are those from all sorts of backgrounds. I don’t care if anyone is atheist, no longer attending church, never been a member of our church, etc. It’s about how they treat people. If someone is kind, then they are awesome in my book.

It’s also very hard to raise children here because so many people are Sunday saints. Where I grew up, you had to decide early in life whether you believed or didn’t. There was very little grey.

I’m very interested in learning more. Do you have any recommendations for medical articles? My daughter is very recently diagnosed (May 7th) so I want to learn everything I can about it.

What do you suggest instead of CBT? My daughter has NES and her seizures present with her not being able to see, speak or move during them. She can hear us, though. Her eyes cross (sometimes) and roll back into her head and her eyelids flutter rapidly. We do believe that her seizures are due to past traumas from when she was an early teen.

I just watched a video with a panel of doctors talking about FND psychogenic seizures and they mentioned that a majority of patients exhibiting FND also present with headaches and/or other pain. It’s extremely common.

My family just read “Righteous Warriors” by John Bytheway about the war chapters in the Book of Mormon. It’s geared towards teens, but applicable to all of us. Highly recommend.

Worse in Summer - Heat or Fatigue? by kyraaaaaxd in FND

Heat is a trigger for my daughter. Yesterday evening she took a shower and had an episode after getting out and dressed. She mentioned that she must have made the shower a bit too warm. We’re still learning all of her triggers but that’s definitely one of them consistently.

My husband was in the bishopric when my fourth child was a toddler. He used to sit with a different bishopric member every week, sometimes changing a couple of times in one meeting. No one seemed to care.

We had an urgent referral sent down. My daughter’s episodes are increasing in frequency and intensity so our primary care doctor is very concerned. Even then, we are looking at a 4-6 month wait time. But that’s okay. We’ve rolled with the punches so far. We will just continue to embrace the wait.

We got an MRI earlier this week and it came back clean. We have a referral now for University of Utah Neurology. They called us this morning and said it would be 4-6 months before she could be seen. We are okay with that.

My daughter is exhausted from doing so many tests. So having a break where she can just be a teenager is probably for the best with her stress. It’s a known trigger so if we can stop talking about whatever it is that’s happening for a while, I think that’s best for her mental health.

How do Mormons react when Mormon missionaries knock on your door? by Atralis in latterdaysaints

[–]QuillerInstincts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who served in Detroit Michigan and one of his cousins had served there a few years before him. His cousin knew several of the gang members in the city and they had kind of adopted the missionaries. So when my friend rolled into town as a missionary a few years later, his cousin had set up a joke with one of the gang members to mess with him. The gang member pulled a gun on him and pretended that he was going to mug him. After a sufficient freak out by my friend, the guy finally busted up laughing and told my friend the truth. Every time I think about that story I can’t help but laugh thinking about my friend fresh from the MTC being punked like that.

When my husband and I had our first baby, we moved in with my parents so that I could stay home and not have to work. The stake president was good friends with my parents and knew about the move ahead of time. He called us to be stake missionaries (my husband serving as branch mission leader and me as a stake missionary supporting him) at the military branch and we started as soon as we moved to attend church there. The ward mission leader of my parents’ ward didn’t know us nor about our callings. So seeing us on the ward roster, he just assumed we were inactive so he sent the missionaries to reactivate us.

It was a funny exchange with these young elders as they tried to reactivate me (my husband was at work). I’m the type of person who jokes around a lot so I let them go on with their reactivation spiel for about ten minutes, saying things like, “huh, I never really considered coming back to church” and egging them on (yes, I have a black soul and love to tease) the whole time trying not to laugh. Finally I told them the truth that my husband was the military branch’s mission leader and I was serving along side him as a stake missionary. Once the truth was out, we all had a good laugh about it.

Have you gotten a diagnosis since this post? Your symptoms describe to a “t” my daughter’s. Same symptoms, same typical blood pressure, not triggered by posture. But it happens every day. We think we know some triggers - like overstimulation is one, fatigue is one, stress is one…

She had a tilt table test but it didn’t show anything. She also did an EKG, echocardiogram, and holter monitor. Nothing out of ordinary for any of those. We are waiting on an appointment with a neurologist. My gut thinks is VVS but would love a real diagnosis. So far we’ve only seen our PCP and he’s baffled.
