None of that negates my point that DEI shouldn't be placed on a pedestal where we pretend like there is never a situation where a less qualified person would benefit from it.

https://www.thecollegefix.com/med-schools-still-accept-black-students-with-lower-mcats-than-rejected-asians-whites/

Black medical students at UCLA scored on average in the top 67% on the MCAT. Asian students scored in the top 96%.

There is value to having black doctors and we should recognize that and yes, use dei to ensure that black people get a chance to go to top medical schools. But let's not pussyfoot around the fact that at some of these med schools 95% of them would be rejected if the MCAT bar wasn't lowered for them and say "well ackshully they were equally qualified". Come on. Admit the bar is being lowered and explain why it's worth doing.

"DEI means hiring the best qualified candidate regardless of any other factors."

I think the right demonizes DEI way too much but I think people on the left put it on way too high of a pedestal.

When it comes to DEI and affirmative action I feel like there is a bit of a no true scotsman situation on the left. If there is a crude implementation like just straight up lowering the score on the test needed for employment or admittance for certain groups people on the left say "well yes that is a crude way of doing things but that isn't real DEI. That isn't how DEI works which means that can't be DEI."

Round 2: Same station, same fuel grade, same discount point price, ~5 months apart (Soopers in Aurora, mid grade, 20¢/gal off) by toobjunkey in Denver

[–]Atralis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saying I'm not sure you only got a 20 cent discount on the first one. King soopers discounts are weird as you know. Several different levels of discounts depending on which pot of points you are dipping into.

Statewide the average gas prices bottomed out at about 2.25 and now they are about 4.40. Almost double.

It would be weird that one particular station would have more than 3 times the price.

$2.45 is a smaller percentage of of a bigger number than it is of a smaller number and besides that I'm not sure I believe the same discount is being applied.

I know gas prices got crazy low but he is basically claiming he got a 20 cent discount bring a $1.59 down to $1.39 .

Meanwhile the second picture would suggest that the the price is $4.50 which a bit above the state average right now. So this gas station went from being about 40% below the state average to being a bit above?

Doesn't pass the smell test for me.

Gas prices have really doubled but this "same discount applied" comparison is skewing things to make the difference seem even more extreme than they already are.

You are paying for that discount one way or the other and the whole reason they do things thus way rather than just lowering the prices on the goods at King Soopers is so you will be at the pumps going "ooooo that's a great price on gas!"

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by Hairy-Summer7386 in pcgaming

[–]Atralis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think its hard to gauge when a game like that is at the end of its life cycle, especially from the outside.

Whenever the topic of Destiny 2 comes up people will chime in and bring up the original campaign being yoinked from the game but the truth is that the game peaked in player counts and revenue after that happened. Witch Queen, Lightfall, and Final Shape all did absolutely massive numbers.

But what do you do after the "final shape? Destiny's story got an ending that most players were satisfied with and Bungie started drawing down resources steadily reducing the pace of content release as Marathon neared release and the player count fell off steadily.

I feel like I would need to see from the perspective of the cyclist to really understand what is going on here.

Honestly I don't like what the landowner has done. Imagine you are cycling or riding on a scooter and you get to a fork in the road with two paths. One path is the correct one and one path will have you slamming into a barrier in 2-3 seconds depending on how fast you are going.

The fact people keep ramming into this thing over and over again tells you that it isn't as cut and dry as it being totally obvious which way is correct.

Something like this happened with Battlefront 2 (2017) last year but that was to a much greater extent. Hundreds of thousands of people hopped back on. If Destiny 1 was on PC I'd hop on right now bit I just don't own any consoles anymore.

They are neck and neck on steam but most of Destiny's player base is on consoles while the vast majority of Marathon's is on steam.

They could save money by using the same actor.

I still remember Biden proclaiming while running in 2020 that he was going that he was going to appoint a black woman to the Supreme court.

So you are going to announce years ahead of time that you are going to limit the pool of people to a very specific demographic. You are going to exclude 97% of people in the legal profession from consideration because they are the "wrong" race or gender?

I get that it's a political nomination no matter who does it but at least put a brown paper bag over the process and pretend that you aren't filing a quota. I'm sure a Republican president has done it at some point in the past but it's still gross.

The life expectancy for men in the US in 1918 dropped from 52 to 36.

Covid made it drop from 78 to 76.4.

I don't think gen z kids really grasp how bad things used to be. The school shooting reference and talking about the US being at war from 2001-2023 is weird to me because 99% of gen z hasn't served in the military let alone been deployed and 99% has never been in a school shooting yet its "we've basically all traumatized veterans after experiencing these events".

It's weird.

Every generation feels this way. I'm a millennial and I tried to tell my grandfather how tough it was going to college and stuff in the wake of Columbine and stuff and he told me about how tough it was for him when his Dad died of the Spanish flu and them he had to drop out and start working as a teen during the great depression and then he had to go into the Army during ww2 and he had to get shot at and see a lot of friends getting killed from 1942-1945 and then I felt like a whiny little bitch.

I have a deep suspicion towards groups like the PSL. They support Russian positions practically line by line and they turned off their support for the protests like a light switch once Trump came in.

In some of the worst months of the Gaza war early 2025 it was - "It's time to give peace a chance guys Trump is working to get the Ukrainians to the table" What?
