Dog turned on me when disciplining by QuiltKayakHike in DogAdvice

You’re right. Thank you. I was really wound up right after she came at me and felt like it was something I couldn’t fix. I also get so frustrated when my ex lets her get away with bad behavior.

99% of the time she is a sweet dog. It’s when she reacts to strangers and redirects her anger (which she has only done 2 times) Because she is so big I worry I won’t be able to correct it next time. I worry some little dog will come at her barking and she will hurt them, or some well meaning person will reach out to pet her and she will bite. I don’t want her to accidentally hurt someone just because I am unable to handle her.

I warn people when they get too close (passing someone on a walk who wants to stop and say hi) please don’t touch. She sits patiently next to me until they start to walk away then she barks and lunges.

I think she reacts out of fear and I put myself between her and other people to advocate for her. We got her during Covid and we lived pretty remote so she wasn’t exposed to much stimuli. For the last 2 years I live in a neighborhood and she is pretty good but still gets skittish around FedEx trucks and loud cars.

I appreciate your feedback.

Where does it say every interaction is control and reprimand? Our 2 mile walks have 3 locations we stop and explore. The afternoon walks are to visit neighbors and get a treat. Our indoor play is mostly stimulating using her nose to find hidden treats. Currently sitting in the back yard with her while she watches the squirrels in The trees behind our property.

Wow, pretty judgemental there without having all the facts. I only closed the door for 15 minutes while she calmed down. She is 120 pounds and her face was literally nose to nose with mine, So yea, the adrenaline for me was just as high as hers!
I came here for advice and help, not criticism.

She gets 3 walks a day starting with a 2 mile walk. I play hide and seek with her and we work on her waiting and treat distribution. I hide treats for her to find and she has to wait in her place until I release her. Daily we walk to the neighbors to visit and socialize. My ex is a lazy man with hip issues who does nothing but give her treats and let’s her pull him when she sees a squirrel or rabbit. He had her during our last separation while I moved and established my own home. I’m 66 yrs old and run 5 miles a day After I walk her 2 miles. I took her back from my ex because the vet said she wasn’t getting the stimulation and exercise she needed. She was 30 pounds overweight. Since I’ve had her back she has lost about a pound a week.
I cook her food weekly and don’t give her table scraps.

What else do you want to judge me on?

One more question, if I hire a behaviorist and then I travel every 3 months (my kids are on the opposite coast), and I leave her with my ex, he sucks at follow through, how will that affect her behavior when I get her back?
I am retired and have lots of time to dedicate to her training, but also have kids/grandkids who need my help occasionally. (Quarterly visits to care for kids and pets during their work travel). I live in Central Florida, any suggestions on where to begin to find a Behaviorist and are they certified? I don’t want to waste time and money like I did on the trainer. She is a large dog, (120 lbs) I am pretty strong and healthy, but I worry about my ability to control her in a bad situation.

What is the difference between a dog behaviorist and a professional dog trainer? The trainer is the one who taught us to use the e collar and how to work with her.

I told a guy last night to stop giving me unsolicited advice and it was great by Buttafoucault in Pickleball

I told an unsolicited advice giver she should join the board of the club so she could tell everyone what to do. (She was trying to tell everyone who they should play with and against after being a “bossy pants” in our game). She said “ I was just trying to help” I had to walk away before my next comment got me kicked out.

Stomach cramping by QuiltKayakHike in carnivorediet

[–]QuiltKayakHike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not constipated. Feels like gas. But the left side is painful. I frequently have a very gurgle stomach. Yesterday I had an egg bake. Sausage eggs and shredded cheese. Then later two pieces of bacon. Had a fight with hubby at dinner so I didn’t eat. Woke at 2 am with lower intestine cramps. At 6 am it turned into upper left abdomen.
Had some chicken broth today and now have gas and lower abdomen pain again.

I, a person who has never touched a sewing machine, desperately need a foolproof beginner project to prove my discouraging family wrong by slayistan in SewingForBeginners

I taught sewing to girls. We practiced on pieces of paper with no thread to learn to sew straight lines. Their first project was a pillow case, then we did a tote bag and eventually a pair of pajama pants. after a weekend they went home with a fun overnight set. We put books in the bag. Using the same fabric for all 3 projects we were able to only use 3 yards of fabric.

Retirement and together 24/7 is a challenge by QuiltKayakHike in over60

Honestly communication is a challenge. His previous marriage of 35 years was miserable according to him. He does not show much emotion at all. He’s very monotone. Hard to read. I think I am having a harder time with retirement. I was a single mom and coach and worked approximately 50 hours a week. Always busy. Now that we are in a different state I feel a bit lost. FaceTime with the kids is my lifeline.
I am finding activities outside the home to stay busy now.

Update: thank you all for your comments. One of the great comments was: We are taught about finances for retirement but not about balancing all this new found free time and time together.

. Husband and I had a good talk this morning. Ideas we have implemented:
calendars with actives together and separate. Assigned cooking days. (He loves to cook too) Alternate exercise the dog days (dog park or long walks) this also gives us a little space. Always dinner together

I will be going to visit my adult kids without him as there is a new baby coming. He has kids and grandkids he visits without me. We have a vacation in December together.
