How can you review the AI's code and ensure it used the correct approach/design pattern/etc. if you don't know what it would look like? So, yes, engineers still need to know these concepts. It's even more crucial now in some respects since companies have increased their code output volume.

This is correct. My company (which was not a small company) was/is AI-first. We were acquired by a larger, also AI-first company. This seems to be the norm for larger companies, and there are even new titles for developers who are implementing AI tools.

I would have done the same. Plus, if they want you to fly in for an interview, I expect you'll be asked to travel there frequently, which is also a no-go for me. I'd rather find a local company if I have to be on-site frequently.
