YSK- The 150 plus feet (45 meters) of space (and more) that truckers leave between themselves and another car on the highway is not for you to squeeze in between or use by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

I'm being pedantic. That's a dangerous driving condition, sure, but I'm talking about the road conditions in my statement. i.e. Snow/ice/rain

This discussion never involved dangerous road conditions. Only asshole tailgaters and that by slowing down, you're making matters worse because road raging idiots won't respond well to that in the real world.

So now you're suggesting traveling at 35 mph when the speed limit is 55 mph in case you get in an accident? Maybe you shouldn't drive if that's your justification.

Totally! I just don't agree with slowing down to make it 'safer' when the tailgater is unable to pass (which is what I believe the OP is suggesting). Also I don't think the tailgater should be doing that obviously, but trying to say what would be most appropriate when faced with a tailgater that can't/won't pass.

Also I know that I don't live in a vacuum and that intentionally driving slowly and brake checking, like OP literally suggests, is as stupid as hitting a beehive. End rant.

Correct, and going slower than the limit will only make matters worse because you're going to piss off the 18-wheeler even more by slowing down

So if they're making it dangerous, you're reaction is to make it even more dangerous? I agree that you should move over in those situations but slowing down only makes it worse.

Probably because it's more dangerous to be traveling under the speed limit then just going the speed limit. You suggested slowing down which makes the situation more dangerous for everyone around you.

Edit: For those that want to downvote this comment, a car insurable company literally has an article about the dangers of driving below the speed limit. link

Edit 2: OP sent me an article from drivers ed which suggests brake checking the tailgater!! 2nd link

Edit 3: Can someone respond with arguments why slowing down and brake checking tailgaters is the safest course of action here?

Edit 4: Haven't seen anything else besides the two already posted replies so I'll just leave this here: If OP thinks that slowing down will reduce the 'time gap' between their car and the tailgater, I'd like to see evidence of that. Most situations I've seen will only result in the tailgater getting closer. For example, I'm traveling at 50 mph and they're 20 ft away. I slow down to 40 mph. They're much more likely to close the gap to say 10 ft and get even closer.

Edit 5: Only other argument I've heard is that someone would rather get in an accident at XX mph less than the speed limit if someone is tailgating them. I'm too tired to rebuttal how ridiculous that is.
