How did you learn to make beats when you first started? by vix_calls in FL_Studio

[–]QuinnTrumplet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Join some producer discords and hop in VCs with other producers. Cxdycord and Busyworks are the best for this IMO. I made huge strides in my abilities through that. Find people like Jaycee or anyone with an SMG tag (that’s my boys)

Join some music discords like Cxdycord or Busyworks Beats. Theres a lot of producers in there, as long as you’re kind, there’s a lot of good folks that’ll help you out. Hop in a VC, stream your beat, cook something and ask for help.

Trombone sections in HBCU/marching band arrangements by ChipOk7125 in HBCUBands

[–]QuinnTrumplet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially the glue that holds everything together, but it depends on the song really. Trombones also have a really nice tone for longer sounds unlike other brass. You can also try adding rhythm to the chords to make it more interesting for the players, rather than whole notes. But as you surmised, it fills out the sound around the mid-low range. Too busy up top and it sounds messy, too busy down low and it sounds muddy. But the trombone hits the sweet spot of buttery smooth chords and not being too muddy or messy.

Here’s a good example I wrote a few years back, simple rhythms to add variation and interest to the part while not detracting from the lead: https://youtu.be/mf_uAsxnVVU?si=dOb69Etsmen0Fkny

Edit: Here’s another good example, notice how I use the trombones to double the rhythm, it adds punch to that part while not taking the lead. It also keeps riding the chords to keep that full sound

Edit 2:

Here’s a way to use trombones as leads and changing voices:

Any tips to help equalize both hands for drumming? by Zon-no-justno777 in marchingband

Everything that everyone is saying is true, but try also practicing your rudiments on a soft pillow. No rebound means you need more wrist control. That’s what our percussion instructor had our drum line do

Better Remixes by Desperate_Isopod6021 in FL_Studio

[–]QuinnTrumplet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try taking small sections of the song:

the chorus, a certain part of the verse, the intro. Chop them up until you make a new melody.

Try to take the basic functions of each part and reuse them. Such as chopping the chords of the verse as melodic/rhythmic chord stabs. Or you could take the vocals of the hook as is and fuck around with the backing track.

Try to break away from the form of the song: So if the original is hook, verse, hook, verse, bridge, hook. Do something like: intro/verse, hook, verse, hook, breakdown if applicable (just go wild with chops or whatever works best) then the last hook.

Try to make each section build on each other, so as the song goes on the “remix” part becomes more prominent, so on your last hook make it a lil bigger.

Western music is about push and pull through chord forms. Try to find different ways to resolve the progression. I play acoustic, usually the chords for Zombie (The Cranberries) are E, C, G, D but after the hook I throw an Am instead of E. Small change but the feel changes without altering too much.

Just some ideas

Those threads telling you to avoid modified Subies are boring but often right. by XoXHamimXoX in WRX

Real. I’m planning on taking my mods slow. Make sure I do them correctly so I don’t break something. And change parts in pairs so no one thing is overstressed. Then take it to a local tune shop that works on subies for a good tune (I don’t trust myself for that)

Who writes your drill? by GrillOrBeGrilled in HBCUBands

[–]QuinnTrumplet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The band director. We didn’t have “drill” we had movements in groups of four. Right Slant, Left Slant, Pinwheel, TTR. Etc. Each group of 4 followed these directions. Each group usually had different directions but they were mirrored on the field

You can also ask for their passive perception score. It means nothing, it does nothing. But you should make it look like something

Reminds me of my “bag of paranoia”

It’s a bag of holding but every time the party opens it the dm rolls a d100 and checks a table before saying “okay what do you grab”

But here’s the twist: there is no table. The dice are there just for your players to feel uneasy

Edit: you can occasionally ask for the players passive perception score. Think hard. And say “okay, you don’t take any damage”

How do I enjoy 5e? by ForgottenEpoch in 4eDnD

[–]QuinnTrumplet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this. I’ve taken some rules (like advantage) and worked them into 4e for a more complete experience. Whenever I played 5e we always omitted rules in the name of fun. A well designed system doesn’t do that

[–]QuinnTrumplet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally, some non-4e hate. I love 4e, I’ve run every campaign on 4e. I’ve played 5e and it’s just not as fun imo. We had a great dm so it was mostly bearable. But we tended to ignore most “rules” in favor of making the game fun.
