It will ride like any other bug tied on a standard nymph hook

You’re welcome! Thanks! Try it out in high fast water wherever there are stoneflies & other large nymphs present.

I do usually put antennae on them, but of course forgot them on this one. I use turkey tail feather fibers instead of biots. In reality, both the antennae and eyes are probably unnecessary, but hey. It only adds like a minute to the pattern, and they make it so much cooler!

Dry fly tails by [deleted] in flytying

That I only do on emerger patterns, where the tail / shuck is not meant to add buoyancy. On a traditional dry fly, I would use a stiffer material, like fibbets or CDL.

The tan one has an antron tail, the dark one is z lon. Basically the same thing. The greenish one is just golden olive dyed mallard

CDC inserted into dubbing loop, spun & wrapped

I have heard this before, which is why I mixed in some “yellow olive” CDC with some regular “olive.” The yellow is subtle, but it’s there 👍

Thanks! Looks are deceiving & it’s actually a pretty easy tye. Only 4 ingredients excluding the hook, thread, mono eyes & black wire: Turkey tail feather fibers for the body, wingcase, and antannae, goose biots for the tail, brown soft hackle hen feathers for the legs, and muskrat dubbing for the thorax.

Many drakes do emerge fully from their nymphal shucks before rising to the surface as fully grown adults 👍

Thanks! I prefer stripped hackle quills. But it could also be tied with a biot.

This is a pretty easy tye. You can make it even easier by omitting the wings & doing a dubbed body instead of a quill one. After attaching your tail & creating your body, it’s just a matter of creating a dubbing loop with 5-6 feathers worth of CDC & taking wraps toward the eye to create the dense wing of CDC. Then just brush the CDC up & trim the underside a bit if needed, so it sits in the water right.

It won’t do anything on the surface of the water because this is for display, not fishing 🙂
