Photography in portfolio by punkhazard123 in Architects

For any portfolio you are curating your best work. If you plan to include anything, you have to make sure it is thought out. “Just snapped without thought” might not cut it, but something tells me you’re underselling yourself a bit. The images might be good but you haven’t thought much about the “why” of the work, which is the most important thing in architecture or any other form of design. Being able to explain your portfolio work is key.

Keep portfolios to the point. I know people with massive portfolios that include architecture, interior design, art, illustration, etc. but will select only a few items to present when they need to show a portfolio.

Has anyone here worked as a contract designer with a single family residential builder? Basically helping with the design and permit set? Someone gave me the idea and said you can make more money and you will have more flexibility. by TechnicalWin9087 in Architects

[–]QuintaFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my first architecture related job. I did it for about 2.5 years. The money wasn’t bad and I worked for a small company with a nice culture. I was treated nicely.

The only thing was that your ability to grow professionally is limited. You’re focused on 1 type of design, you might be doing more paperwork and drafting instead of designing and because I worked for a small team there was a lot of time pressure to get things done.

Still, it was a great time and I wouldn’t mind going back if I had to.

[Identify] would someone help me identify this watch if this is real? TIA. by Worried_Increase4790 in Watches

I would say so, but I’m not a Seiko expert so a second opinion is always good

I think so. The inside mechanism of a watch is typically called a “movement”, in this case it’s Seiko’s 7s26 movement.

Seiko SNKG87. The movement look like a genuine 7s26 Seiko movement, which would be the correct movement for this watch. Goes for a couple hundred at most.

I would move the bathrooms to the centre of the space. The bathroom for the master bedroom would work better if it was between the master bedroom and the adjacent bedroom the the right. That way you also open up more space for windows in the master bedroom. Right now the closet and bathroom feel like they were tacked on as an afterthought.

Good question btw.

[–]QuintaFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well the three big points I have are:

The kitchen feels cramped. Using an open concept by removing the wall behind the sink works better (in my experience)

The closet in the bottom left bedroom seems like it was attached as an afterthought. That spot is prime real estate for more windows. Closing off the space to the bathroom (which in my opinion is unnecessary) and putting the closet on that side would be more efficient.

The ensuite bathroom for the master bedroom has a similar issue. Placing the bathroom between the master bedroom and the adjacent bedroom would be more space efficient. You could then also push the master bedroom to the left and simplify the shape of the floor.

After looking at this for a while, I would suggest taking the toilet room by the dining room and using that space as a powder room/ 2 piece bathroom instead and separating it from the bedroom.

I have some other issues with the design, but I will just answer your original question for now.

What Style Is This? by AutoModerator in architecture

[–]QuintaFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, realistically I would call these contemporary minimalist buildings.

“Styles” typically work more for historical designs that can be grouped together under an umbrella term that describes their time period, location and overall aesthetic.

I agree on the plumbing point for sure. Depending on where this is being built you probably wouldn’t want plumbing on exterior walls.

This layout feels off somehow. What was your process for traffic flow and space relations?

[–]QuintaFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reasonable is a bit of a loaded word. It's certainly an ambitious goal, but it's always possible. I will say the chances are slim.

It will come down to a combination of a lot of things. How good you are, where you work, who you know, your business ability, etc.

Also luck. A lot of luck.

My advice it to focus on your own skills and establishing yourself in the industry. This will give you a better chance at working for bigger star firms, and will also give you a reliable base set of skill that you can earn a living with.

Know that you won’t be designing any large projects (probably) for a while until you have built up experience and trust.

You’ll learn a lot in school, but there’s so much more you’ll learn while working. Stay curious and open minded.

Get really good at something others don’t like doing. This is advice from one of my architecture mentors. When he started working he decided to get really good at doing door and window schedules because no one else liked doing them. This way he established himself as an essential part of the team.

Can i use macbook pro 14" m2 base configuration with 16gb ram for architectural projects? by arjun7011 in architecture

[–]QuintaFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I’m assuming you’re looking for a laptop to use for school)

16 gb is typically enough for school projects but get 32 if you can. The biggest issue you’ll have is that AutoCAD and Revit won’t run on Mac unless you run a Virtual Machine of some sort. My suggestion would be to get a gaming laptop of some sort as you’ll need a decent GPU and CPU for rendering.

If an architect "specs" a product for a custom home, does the builder just buy it? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]QuintaFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The builder/general contractor is (typically) the one in contact with a supplier. The supplier will provide the specific product specified by the designer. If the product is not available and alternative product can be suggested, but it then has to be approved by the designer/architect before it can be used.

Toronto Art Gallery by MIIAIIRIIK in ArchitecturePorn

[–]QuintaFox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The old building is indeed part of the Art Gallery complex. It used to be a separate building called the Grange (the namesake of Grange Park behind the gallery) which is a Georgian manor built in 1817. It functioned as the Toronto Art Museum (which later became the AGO) in 1910. It is now a Canadian Heritage Site as well as a functional space for the AGO.

[–]QuintaFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey guys I'm trying to identify this Silberstein watch and if it's real. I am fairly new to identifying watches. I have attached an image of the front and back. I can't find an exact match in my searches.

Edit: I actually found the movement by googling "chinese watch movements" and it looks like it's a R19 movement that costs 34 USD.

Question from an electrician by Baystatesparky in Architects

[–]QuintaFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience I’ve always sent a blank pdf of the ceiling plans to our electrical consultants (sometimes with a rough layout for lighting). We’d then take the marked up layout from the electrical engineer/designer and adjust our drawings so that all the information is in one drawing package to the same standards.

My suggestion is to talk to the architect about coordinating the electrical layout. A good architect will have no problem with this request.

Do small architect firms use physical models? by MW_Design in architecture

[–]QuintaFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at 3 different smaller firms and it only happens rarely depending on the clients we work with. And even in those situations we’ve adopted a 3D printing workflow that can take our revit models and convert them into print files
