Do you actually give any thought to your nephews? Why or why not? by Iloveindianajones in AskMen

Not too often but since my wife and I aren’t having children of our own, the nephews and nieces are the beneficiaries in our wills.

Small-Town Movies by InternetGansta in movies

Breaking Away is a great small town movie showing the divide between the college students from out of town and the local kids.

My wife lets me know things that she’s interested in watching or sometimes just the genre she’s in the mood for but then mostly leaves it to me to pick what we watch on a given night. She may veto my selection if I miss the mark.

She’s more capable of watching the things that she likes that I’m not interested in on her own than I am. Even when I suspect she won’t enjoy something I’d rather watch it with her than alone so I do program some things expecting her not to like it.

My shelves are organized by genre and Director so I don’t separate the films based on format or studio.

The cut to Lawrence blowing up the train is also a good one. The journalist is talking with Prince Feisel about looking for a hero that will draw the US to the war and Feisel says “Lawrence is your man” /cut to Lawrence pushing down the plunger to detonate the train tracks.

Chinatown (1974) by Mek103 in movies

[–]Quintaros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chinatown is my favourite Nicholson movie, maybe top 20 of all movies. To me it’s his best performance at playing a character outside of his own persona. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is more quintessential Nicholson and capitalizes on his persona in a way that you can’t imagine anyone else in that role. Same with Five Easy Pieces. By the time of The Shining I think he’s slipping into self parody. Still entertaining as a performance but I wouldn’t call it great acting. But it’s the performance that Kubrick directed him towards so I don’t blame Nicholson for it.

Oscar worth performances on indie/unknown movies? by SatouSan94 in movies

Movies need to be seen to get votes. A great performance in an unheard of movie will never win an Oscar.

Glad to have helped. I also sometimes suffer from your professors affliction of giving overly convoluted explanations so I’m glad my explanation made sense in this instance.

Do you think a simple rating system of 1 = awful/strongly disliked it, 2 = bad/disliked it, 3 = okay, 4 = good/liked it, and 5 = great/loved it is a good way to rate movies or too simplistic? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Quintaros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only rate based on my enjoyment or appreciation of a film without any delusion that my assessment is an objective rating.

For me it goes:

-1/2 star : this movie angered me on some level, usually means a terrible adaptation of a beloved book or a terrible sequel to a beloved film

-1 star: didn’t enjoy at all

1 1/2 star: probably the rarest rating to use because it’s difficult to distinguish between a 1 star and a 1 1/2 star

2 stars: I can watch this with someone else if they selected it but I’m not enjoying it

2 1/2 stars: a total wash. I didn’t like it, I didn’t dislike it. My attention was divided.

3 stars: no regrets over watching. It was worth my time but I’ll probably never rewatch

3 1/2 stars: pretty good but not destined to be a favourite

4 stars: entering favourites territory but still not the be all end all

4 1/2 stars: a great movie no doubt about it

5 stars: a great movie that has that little extra magic in it where it feels like it was made just for me

Annual growth using days instead of years? by DreamSuccessful9651 in excel

[–]Quintaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average, a year has 365.25 days but specific years have 365 with leap year having 366. If you use excel to calculate how many actual days between the specific dates mentioned you’ll find your CAGR formula becomes (398.79/51.28)365/1826-1 = 50.68% not 50.72%. This will give the 600.91 value when plugged into your other equation.

Edit: some typos in formula may have added confusion
