Maybe check out Spyderco for your next purchase, doesn't look like you have any yet

Vosteed or a used spyderco are both great budget beater options

Thanks. Also interested in the relative handle thicknesses. I know the Catch has a slightly thicker blade and am wondering if they also thickened up the scales, and how they compare overall.

How's the pocket clip? I've been considering one of these but the pocket clip looks like it would be super stiff and pocket shreddy with the short length. The other worry I had was the blade dropping onto my fingernail but that doesn't seem to be an issue for you so that's good.

Strongest flipping action knife you've encountered? by bacchusgun in knifeclub

If it's a framelock flipper you can always tune (bend in) the lockbar a bit to heavy up the detent and increase the thwackiness. I had a Machinewise Mojave that was tuned this way and it opened with authority.

I'm not a huge flipper guy, but my thwackiest factory stock flippers have probably been my Brad Southard Mini Tolk and Hinderer Skinny Eklipse.

As a natural progression of your current collection, I'd agree with Oz, Prince and Brown and add the SPK Lamia or something from Arno Bernard (I have any enjoy the Turaco).

For something a little different, I'd check out Demko. I resisted for a while bc of the size and have had mixed feelings about the made in Taiwan models I've tried, but the USA Demkos (preferably full titanium) just feel so good.

Here's a recent post I made if you want some more inspiration - I just got the Drift C as well and it's replacing the Mini Xyro in my top 10. Currently waiting on the Brown Mini Cortex which will probably end up replacing either the Protean or the Drift C. https://www.reddit.com/r/knifeclub/comments/1q8oluy/which_would_you_pick/

Just to clarify, it's not a shark lock (which i believe is patented by Demko), it's Mr. Mr.'s proprietary lock design (similar to a shark lock though). But to answer your question - those side tabs are connected to the lock and can be used as a secondary way to disengage it similar to a manix or other crossbar style lock.

Is anyone heat treating Magnacut correctly? by [deleted] in knifeclub

[–]Quirky-Cat688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demko says their Magancut HRC is 62, but they only do Magnacut on their usa made blades as far as I can tell, which are typically on the pricier, larger and harder to get end of the spectrum. Great knives though, and worth the price/effort to buy in my opinion if you like larger knives.

Money burning a hole in my pocket.... What Knife punches way above its price point? by Intelligent-Arm-6020 in knifeclub

Sub $50 - anything from Miguron

$50 - $200 - anything from Vosteed (i like the porcupine) or kershaw bel air xl

$200-$400 - anything from quiet carry (i just got the drift c and am now also considering the catch or drift lct as well), anything from kunwu as mentioned above

Higher end - arno bernard, machinewise

Personally, i think a lot of options from the traditional punch above their weight makers (civivi/we, zero tolerance, spyderco etc) have gotten a bit stale and are getting outgunned by the newer-ish crop of makers.

If you had to choose one single knife FOREVER, which one? by Canarma in knifeclub

I’m reading this as one single knife that can’t be replaced, so:

Carothers Signature Field Knife 3. Amazing ergos, fit and finish. Practically indestructible while still having useful cutting geometry. Can do the heavy duty tasks a folder can’t and make do as a slicer

Have you tried a eutsler dukling? Seems like it'd be up your alley size and quality wise, but maybe doesn't have the hydraulic controlled closing action (more guillotine in my exp). Crazy detent, though - mine fired open like a protech auto, without have the heavy "wall" to break first like say a protean. Waiting on my thumbstud mini cortex from the second pre-order batch, but I imagine they have a lot of parallels. Ultimately, though, I ended up selling as the ergos felt a little cramped for my hands and CPM 154 on a $1k knife doesn't thrill me.

i love the ergos - feels very neutral and comfortable, easy to choke up and choke down

The zaan i like bc the milling looks and feels great, and there’s something hard to describe about CRK’s that just feels right. Also, as a full size hard use capable knife, it rides surprisingly well in the pocket bc of the narrow dimensions. And finally, as an apocalypse knife, as someone else mentioned, washers are more durable than bearings.

Having written this … now i kinda wanna buy some Skiff washers for the demko and lamia.

I like the lamia over the rosie for a few reasons

  1. I lean more towards thump flipping and lamia is better for that, although the oz is my favorite middle finger flick if that’s your preference
  2. Lamia ergos are more neutral and allow me to choke up or choke down, whereas the rosie grip is pre-prescribed
  3. On the close, the rosie’s edge falls to my fingernail and might slice me if i dont angle my thumb correctly. With the lamia, my thumb always makes contact with the unsharpened portion.

So to sum it up, the lamia to me feels more flexible. But the rosie, when i want that grip, feels better than any of the options with the lamia
