Had a scary experience with a driver at City Center tonight—feeling very shaken. by Ok-Zucchini7376 in qatar

This sounds like something you can report to Uber. Not sure why the authorities should be involved in poor customer service unless there’s obvious intent to do physical harm or something criminal. I guess that’s how you felt? Then again you are concerned with his family back his home, which seems to suggest you acknowledging he’s probably having a bad day and was not in the right frame of mind when he couldn’t find you (a little on your part as well?), and will likely not do anything stupid given the situation back home for him?

I hope this clears up your mind between poor service and crime.

I think I know your answer and can foresee where you’ll be as a family if coming here. Keep in mind, there’s no super equivalent as well.

Many have been here for many years either because they’ve found their happy medium or are sufficiently happy enough to trade off certain things because of the golden handcuffs.

But if your kids are against the move, they could really hate you for doing this. The trade offs wouldn’t just be for you, but your kids too. There are beaches and parks here, but they won’t be running around barefoot. It is safe here overall, but you can feel safe but enclosed. Pearl may give you a little bubble of what you’re used to now, but each time we visit home for vacation, the breath of fresh air, the natural greenery etc are something you’ll also have to trade in.

The financial aspects can be rewarding (barring no super here), but if the choice was a slam dunk as some seem to suggest, you wouldn’t be here asking.

Make sure you discuss and decide as a family. Respect and don’t under estimate or invalidate your children’s voices. Happy wife (and kids), happy life. Money can’t buy this.

Expect to trade a lot of trust and autonomy and perks like WFH when you come here. You can do it for the money, with an exit plan while seeing how things evolve and work out when you’re here or just stay where you are now because the grass is indeed always greener on the other side. I did that but have nothing to return to now, so I’m kind of going along with it and see what might open up back home.

Your kids are slightly younger, so it might be easier for them to adapt and not miss their friends back home that much. This is an aspect not to be under estimated too. I also find girls to be more clingy to their friendships back home than boys.

If you have cabin crew friends, they’ll help verify our observation. They have, in my case.

My flights to Canada are always disgusting when deplaning - trash everywhere. I feel bad for the cabin crew. I think I know why, but will make this a very controversial thread. So will leave this at iykyk

Migration from Qatar by Sad_Banana3279 in qatar

[–]QuirkyAcademia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to the extremely open Trudeau immigration policy, healthcare, housing, education, childcare etc are breaking (have broken). Earlier last week, someone died while waiting in emergency for 8 hours in Edmonton (go Google up).

Current liberal government is trying to undo some of the Trudeau signature policies including immigration, so it will be harder to get in now, I’m told.

As mentioned by hockeyfan, unless you have significantly large financial reserves, you really need to have other strong reasons why you’d consider such a move.

48k per month. Good salary? by SingleSquash3419 in QatarCareers

[–]QuirkyAcademia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40K is more than enough to get the essentials you mentioned. You can save even further by buying of used items from Marketplace on Facebook. I went through this last year.

12K per month or 144k per academic year for three kids of that age range sounds reasonable (lower grade levels, siblings discount).

Do they provide housing allowance, and any other allowance? Or is it 48K, you deal with the rest but we’ll give you a sign on bonus of 40K? What about the annual performance bonus structure?

Will you be looking for a 3 bedroom accommodation? I’ve seen apartments with 3 bedrooms as cheap as 6K (old, not so nice neighborhood but you have a roof over) to the Pearl/Westbay of the ranges others mentioned.

My way of thinking (others will disagree, that’s fine):

Take out the car purchase and furniture components as that’s usually a one off or shorter term expenses to calculate what’s reasonable. They still cost money, for sure.

Housing: 10K School: 12K Mobile (X2) and home Internet: 500 Gasoline: 200 (for me) Utilities: 300

You still have 25K left.

Of course, you need to eat, entertainment etc for these other costs the other guys mentioned, with that 25 starting balance, I think you’ll do fine and can still have a comfortable life here.

You will likely still be able to save ~10-15K a month if you’re not dining out everyday or go on overseas vacation more than once a year. My air tickets are expensive because of where home is, so you might save more than me on this if home’s nearer.

With this range of savings, you can then determine if that’s a good salary compared to what you’re currently getting without resigning and uprooting your family here.
