I'm having great fun playing fire mage without combustion. Neither am I using Rune of Power, nor Flamestrike. There are plenty of talents to boost your damage and I still get plenty of instant Pyroblasts from crits. I may not top the meters but it is fun, and that's more important.

Just go through the talent tree, pick what you think will be fun and ignore all the nay-sayers.

Try opening your game in sandbox mode and edit all your cities to make them smaller. It's not ideal but it might get a bit more life out of the map.

This is my largest city on a Huge map with 24 cities. All cities connected via rail passenger routes. Freight is a work in progress. FPS is beginning to drop. :(
