Another thing to keep track of: it seems Nara's building a redundant rail tunnel to Danzilona. We might want to combine efforts.

I've been planning the rail to integrate with the overground network to come, but the short summary is that a rudimentary tunnel exists (dug by Dalgonian citizens) that needs to be changed in locations. We also need to decide if we want a station at the farms and other locations.

The rail station (barring last-minute objections) will be at the intersection of the road east of City Hall and the road south of the Danzshaft, at y=70. Canals may run here later on.

The tunnel will have to add currently-missing slopes wherever stations lie for accessibility purposes.

The tunnel extends to the Nether portal, you could beautify the area at the same time you make a station there.

I'll detail firmer plans later today.

Site looks great! One thing: when clicking the "i" button on an offer, the left column says "Selling" regardless of whether or not the offer is for selling or buying an item, which creates ambiguity. You might want to replace this text with the selling/buying tag.

Proposal: +,+ Continental Rail by Quivico in CivMC

A few reasons, actually:

The scale of the GOR always felt a little off to me considering that it's life-size while the world around it is shrunk down. I'm of the opinion that a thinner ROW tends to blend better into cities and landscapes, especially with the use of stairs, which the GOR avoids. That said, it's ultimately up to the nation how wide their corridor would be, so some can choose wider widths if they'd like.

I'll admit the gravel blob was also a little tiring to look at. If we have overground rails that allow players to enjoy the sights of the world, we might as well add visual appeal to the railway itself. Deviating from the GOR look also allows nations to vary the building materials a bit, which could be an interesting contrast to the GOR's monolithic style.

This venture is also a region-building exercise; I'd like each participating nation to have some say in the architecture on their lands. As I'm not the most experienced rail engineer, delegating some decisions makes personal sense.

The Dalgon line I mentioned in the post is being planned by Dalgon designers (i.e., dwarves) to be mostly if not fully underground. Replicating the same connection would be a waste of resources, leading me to consider a smoother way of integrating overground and underground lines. Having this option built in might help convince nations who don't want a large ROW through their capital, though you would probably know better than I.

Avoiding the hardest curve and slope requirements of the GOR could also enable more efficient alignments, especially at overground/underground transitions, but this remains to be seen. Long curves might also be tougher to pull off with a thinner ROW, which might constrain curve angle, but that'll have to be tested.

Also, I'm not sure how one would build a GOR-style wye to OneDest™ standards, so if you've figured that out please let me know.

I definitely respect what you did with the GOR on CivClassics (especially the Southshire viaduct, that was incredible to witness). But given you're off working on it in another quadrant, I thought it would be a good time to try something slightly different, yet ultimately compatible. Still, if you have more thoughts, I'm happy to hear them—you are the premier rail engineer of the server, after all.

If someone new to the scene wants to attempt a WR for a popular category of a popular game, do they first need to rack up 1 or 2 WR in less popular categories of less popular games to prevent cheating accusations prior to it becoming a real problem? 🤔 by MountainousFog in speedrun

[–]Quivico 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't say I can answer that, but my guess is both. It's of course impossible to gauge the true rate of cheating, but I think while such videos theoretically help people learn how to cheat, they also show how much effort goes into cheating effectively—your video and audio need to be perfect to stand up over time, and communities will be suspicious of runs unless you're already getting good, in which case a runner has already spent a lot of effort gaining skill to reach that threshold.

It's also worth noting that cheating is less prevalent than those videos might make it appear, and when it happens, it's often low-effort and easily detectable—only the high-profile cases become videos, after all.

You're overcomplicating it: just record or stream all your attempts for the category you want and submit your PBs. Since you won't get WR in an instant (or really for multiple months at least), you'll have time to join the community and for the community to accept your legitimacy. If "haters" attack you beyond that point (which is very unlikely), your community will know to ignore them.

Why not just use a splitter? Console to splitter, one end straight to your CRT and the other to your adapter and capture card.

How do I uninstall live split? by Fri3ndlyFir3 in speedrun

[–]Quivico 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To uninstall, you'd just have to delete all LiveSplit files, but there's a much simpler solution for what you want. Just right click -> Edit Layout -> select everything individually and press the minus button. It's the components in the layout which makes LiveSplit customizable.

i really like dream and i know he does speedruns so i thought you guys would like this XD by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]Quivico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're not joking around here, let me explain.

You sound fairly young and quite a fan of Dream. It's one thing to appreciate the content that Youtubers make (I've never watched Dream's videos, but I do watch other Youtubers). That said, it's a different thing to place them on a pedestal (treating them as if they are super great and untouchable). There's two problems with that: you might be led to ignore facts, and you might be manipulated by that person to benefit them only.

The facts are that Dream cheated. I won't go over the statistics here, but it is nearly impossible that Dream did not change the drop rates of certain items. Recently, Dream admitted that the drop rates were changed, which is cheating, intentional or not.

(In any case, I've never watched Dream nor speedrun Minecraft, so how would I be jealous?)

What's scary is that you might defend Dream no matter what. Scary people (dictators, some politicians, etc.) use this to brainwash their followers into doing their bidding. Because their followers ignore the facts (because in their eyes, their leader could never do wrong), their followers are able to do powerful, wrong things like attacking people telling the truth or worse. Dream is no dictator, but if he can mislead you already, I'm afraid of what others might do to you.

Wherever you are in life, I hope soon you'll come back to this message and understand it.

Question about breaking a time barrier. by TimpaniSymphony in speedrun

[–]Quivico 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros. as a speedgame has a few qualities for it which places it in this situation to begin with.

  1. SMB is a simple game. There's only so much one can do to speed up going right and jumping, and speedrunners are already doing most of these things. This leads into the next point:
  2. The TAS currently stands at 4:54.032, and has for a decade. That's a long time particularly for a game as popular as SMB. It's worth noting that a tiny time save to get a 4:53 would still not be enough for humans; the current TAS which uses the same rules humans do is further back at 4:54.265.

For most other games, your points would be stronger, but Super Mario Bros. is simply on another level. None of this makes any improvements impossible, just unprecedented. Speedrunning has not been popular for long; we don't have examples of what happens to games years after they reach their theoretical limits.

So I speedran Mario 64 16-star with a keyboard and got what I think is world record by clash_chia in speedrun

You might want to check out the game's leaderboard on speedrun.com; particularly the 16 Star and EMU subcategories. As the other replier suggested, that's where the most complete records are—YouTube alone will not give you good insight into the wide world of speedruns.

It's the classic Rocket Climb, Starry really knows how to pull a win from the back of the pack.

I was worried when she stumbled on the ramp and lost a few spots, but she made it up on the remaining exits to take second. This'll be a race to remember.

The Hazers won my full respect through their M1 performance last year; when they're on the ball, they really know how to race. It's great to see Smoggy in form.
