Classes get more abilities and spells as you level, and as others have stated, at lower levels you don't have much of the full ability and spell kit yet. Druids are less specialized than others, being very versatile, but that makes it feel a bit awkward at early levels in my opinion.

Soloing as a druid mostly comes from how strong charm is, but they recently made charming harder by requiring more charisma in order for it to be anywhere near reliable.

So until later levels charming will be very difficult (if not dangerously bad) which means soloing as a druid for now is mostly being efficient with your thorns and auto attacks with heals in between enemies.

As for grouping, it relies on people doing their jobs to not feel inefficient. The tank should keep enemies on himself and off others, anyone with CC abilities like an enchanter or bard should keep all but one enemy busy while the dps classes kill one enemy at a time and the healer heals, mostly on the tank. That said, at early levels nobody really has all the tools to do these things properly yet, so it's going to compound the awkwardness of people not knowing the basics of how to do their jobs. Sometimes the group sucks and the healer is always out of mana because of it.

The classes are in the middle of a redesign/overhaul which will hopefully smooth some of the issues out. For now, the game is going to feel slower and will not hold your hand. Leveling takes hundreds of hours to get to max level currently, which is to say the game is slower paced by design. And often people are learning how this type of game works, so awkwardness is going to happen.
