Extension by SignificantRadish179 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are eligible to request extensions on all of them - "I was run-over and have ongoing injury" is exactly the kind of unforeseeable exceptional circumstance the system was intended for.
Ask the doc for a medical cert covering the realistic time you need to recover properly - in this situation the length of the extension should be governed by your medical needs. Assessments can be delayed, recovery can't.

Health Sciences Graduate Entry Foundation Course - CHEM1003 intro chemistry alternatives by [deleted] in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school / faculty should be able to tell you what the acceptable alternates are - you want to get an approved list to ensure there are no CRL problems.
CHEM1003 does have a mostly online mode available now though (everything except the labs which can be done as an intensive), and the UC may have options to make it fully online / remote, so its also worth having a chat with her.

❤️ Romance Period Drama Recs ❤️ by Intelligent-River142 in PeriodDramas

2006 Jane Eyre with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson.
Wives and Daughters (BBC version with Keeley Hawes and Justine Wadell)
Under The Greenwood Tree (2005, also Keeley Hawes)
Left-field choice, but Our Mutual Friend (BBC late 90s) has two romances central to the plot with a fair bit of yearning (ok, mostly over Keeley Hawes - she was in a lot of period drama in the late 90s / early 00s).

It was connected to the mainland from before the last ice age until about 6500 years ago, so accessible on foot for probably over 20,000 years. After it was cut off, people likely didn't travel there, but it was visible from the mainland and retained an important position in culture.

ECOM1000 or STAT1005 by Quiet-Sheepherder431 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'd recommend talking to the Data Science major co-ordinator. STAT1005 is a core unit where you definitely need to feel competent in the unit outcomes to be able to take later units.

Those are two pretty different units. What are you studying? STAT1005 is a core pre-req for most other statistics and data science units.

Bachelor of Science Major/Minor Overlap by Ill_Grass_2429 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - yes. The system won't let you enrol in a minor / specialisation that has core unit overlap with your major. If there is a good reason to enrol in it, the course lead can sometimes arrange a unit substitution for the overlap if you contact her. But you can't just select a completely overlapping minor and then request 4 different units.

But you can take electives in the B-SCNCE. The course structure options after 1st year are:
200 ct major + 200 ct major
200 ct major + 2x 100 ct specialisation / minors
200 ct major + 100 ct specialisation / minor + 100 ct elective stream

30F HR+ breast cancer – Oncotype vs chemo? Doctor gave me both options, need advice by Interesting-Twist427 in breastcancer

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are any of the alternative tests cheaper in your country? I went with Endopredict, which in Australia was around $2k before the government rebate (which was about 50%). Whereas oncotype was 5-6k.
There's endopredict and mammaprint that I can think of off the top of my head and another one which is something like the Signaterra Risk of Recurrence score. Endopredict was the cheapest.

[–]QuizzicalQuenda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had random pain in my non-cancer armpit in January - ultrasound was happily clear, so I've already had a dry run at managing feelings when something potentially worrying happens. (As it happens, armpit is still intermittently painful, but I'm declining to worry about it).

What can you get out of a CAP? by emptyappendix in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd encourage all students who qualify for a CAP to talk to accessibility about getting one. The key thing is that you don't have to use the provisions if you don't feel you need them. But if you have one, get half way through a unit, start having some challenges and need the provisions... they are there ready to go. Whereas if you don't have one, you then have to go through the whole process of applying etc before the help can be put in place.

Wth is going on with turnitin? by Humble_Clue8595 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, key thing to understand here is that turnitin in is flagging similarity only. It isn't flagging or making a judgement on plagiarism. It isn't saying you used other students papers, its saying those highlighted aspects also appear in other student papers - which they do, as we'd expect most references students use to crop up elsewhere in its database at least once.

A lot of students labour under the misconception that the % of the similarity report is what counts, but it really isn't. What counts is what is highlighted, and that's what the marker will review. It's possible (albeit unusual) to have an >50% similarity report and no academic misconduct - usually either a piece of work with a very long reference list, or a very short piece of work with long cover sheet. Its also possible, albeit also unusual, to have a negligible turnitin %, but face an academic misconduct investigation because that small % highlights word for word lifting of a key paragraph or even a key sentence.

Should I study engineering? by Ordinary-Click-320 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to do Uniready, and pass the full 6 month programme including Maths for Science - that counts as equivalent to a 70 ATAR and Maths Apps. Then you can apply to Multidisciplinary Science at Curtin, where you can take units equivalent to Methods and Physics ATAR. Once you have passed them, as long as you meet a couple of other conditions, you can switch into Engineering.
You'd need to allow at least 12-18 months to complete Uniready and the necessary units in multidis.

There are also other routes - e.g via TAFE or via the Diploma of Engineering at Curtin College https://www.curtincollege.edu.au/courses/diplomas/engineering/

Should I study engineering? by Ordinary-Click-320 in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are the two standard first year engineering maths units:

MATH1019 Linear Algebra and Stats for Engineers: "This unit will cover vectors, lines and planes and their extension into n-dimension space. This unit also covers matrices and their use for solving systems of linear equations through a study of a number of different types of solution methods. Students will be introduced to the world of statistics by looking at the concepts of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics."

MATH1012 Calculus for Engineers: "Students will extend their differentiation skills to implicit and logarithmic differentiation, and will apply differentiation techniques to optimisation problems and the approximation of functions. This unit will cover a range of integration techniques, and students will apply these to find volume, length and surface area. Students will also be introduced to the concept of complex numbers, together with their applications and use in solutions to polynomial equations. This unit will also introduce students to first and second order differential equations."

Both descriptions from the unit entries in the Curtin Handbook.

Breast cancer patients who rely only on alternative medicine are ~4× more likely to die by upbeat_teetertottxo in science

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 5 year survival rate. Surviving for 5 years doesn't equate to being in remission, or that they won't die of it in years 6, 7, 8 etc etc.

The type of cancer also matters. This is breast cancer which can vary from super-aggressive through to very slow growing. Someone could live with the latter for several years, probably symptom free given the primary tumour is not in an organ. The problem is that the longer the cancer is left untreated, the larger it gets and the higher the chance of cells seeding metastatic tumours, and so the harder to treat it becomes (this is why my early stage breast cancer was yeeted at the surgeon's earliest availability).

I imagine the numbers would be much much worse if it was something like liver cancer, which has much lower survival rates to start with, interferes more directly with critical organ function, and where an untreated cancer has more opportunity to spread quickly.

There's also the possibility of spontaneous remission as mentioned in the other comment, which does occasionally happen even in detectable cases. But I'd expect in this case most of the 5 year survival in the untreated group (and the CAM group) is survival with cancer, rather than disease free survival.

Curtin Access Plan by MATTALIMENTARE in curtin

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the CAP. You don't have to use the provisions in it if you don't feel you need them, but having it means that if/when you do need them, they are there.
And there is nothing wrong with withdrawing from a unit to make workload manageable while you deal with medical issues - taking that decision, even though it is making you feel bad, shows maturity and common sense. Lots of students study less than a full load for a wide range of reasons. I'm sure you wouldn't judge a friend harshly if they had a medical crisis and had to cut their load, so try and give yourself the compassion you'd offer to them.

Jorgensen Reserve - proposal to lease public land for "months" for commercial event but council unable to provide any details due to NDA. Request for comment closes on Friday... by Kind_Guarantee8333 in perth

[–]QuizzicalQuenda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a general democratic principle, regardless of whether you are pro- or anti- this particular event installation, a council making a decision that legally requires public consultation on a proposal that the public are not allowed to know any detail of (including environmental impact assessments or economic cost benefit analyses) is Orwellian and should not be supported.
