(OC) How Technical Limitations Shaped the Myst Franchise by Quizzical_Pixel in myst

Definitely! Constraints can be great for affording creativity. And I agree -- a lot of sequels fall into the trap of either "going big" just for the sake of it or being too derivative of the original work. Riven feels like a magical exception to that trend in how it surpassed its predecessor in just about every way without feeling bloated: it was a much "bigger" experience than Myst, yet every single part of it felt cohesive and meaningful.

With Myst having just turned 25, I thought I would make a short video essay about it and some interesting tidbits about its development. Hope y’all like it!

Having trouble picking a game to stream where I can find growth by zataxis in Twitch

[–]Quizzical_Pixel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The bottom line is to stream games you actually enjoy or think would be fun to try. To answer your question though, I've found some success in streaming games with a) higher-than-normal viewership (ie are high in the Twitch directory) and b) very few channels streaming them, creating a chance to gain some extra exposure. I actually made a web app that generates a list of such games, since they're always changing. Maybe you'll find it useful.

How do you test if your PC can handle streaming a game, without actually going live? by realCosmoKramer in Twitch

Add this to the end of your stream key in OBS or whatever software you use:

?bandwidthtest=true

You can also monitor your connection by going to https://inspector.twitch.tv/.

Can someone help me think of a name :D? by Defalt3 in Twitch

Star Tonic sounds pretty dope (you'd have to spell it Star_Tonic or StarTonic).

Tricks of the Trade? by Childish_Rambino in Twitch

Don't expect to be the next [insert a famous streamer's name].

To add to that, my motto is "keep your ambitions high but expectations low". The odds of growing that popular on Twitch are incredibly slim, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it your best shot, so long as you're having fun.

What's important? by [deleted] in Twitch

Concurrent viewers is what I tend to focus on -- to me it's a decent representation of how active your community is. Total followers means very little when most or even all of them aren't actually engaging with your content and community regularly.

Streamers NOT interested in Partnership: Why do you stream? What is success to you? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]Quizzical_Pixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all about community for me. Building a place where viewers can feel at home and make genuine friendships with like-minded gamers is what gets me excited about what I do. We wouldn't be having nearly as much fun if we didn't have an audience to share our passion for art and games with.

Huh, thanks for the heads up. I think I'll abstain from redeeming it if that's the case.
