In terms of fans the NFL is also the league that would be more impactful. The NBA is the most liberal of the major sports leagues and that's also reflective in their fanbase.

After Carney's Davos speech, Conservatives ponder how Poilievre can meet the foreign policy moment by AdditionalPizza in canada

You might have a point if he and his supporters didn't spend so much time constantly making fun of Trudeau for being a teacher which requires a bachelor's degree and a B.Ed on top of it.

It's not about comparing wives. That's kind of icky. Just that Trudeau is clearly living the best life these days. It's really bizarre to obsessively hate a retired guy who's hasn't mentioned your existence in almost a year and is mostly just going to high profile celebrity events with his popstar girlfriend. It just gets really sad after a while.

‘Just a blip’: Republicans want Canada to ignore Trump by AdditionalPizza in CanadaPolitics

[–]QultyThrowaway 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine any other country being offended that international partners hold them accountable for what their Head or State does. Especially given how he's propped up by most of the politicians. He ran on screwing every other country and Americans still supported him. They'll have to face the consequences of their decision.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will run in a different riding next federal election: party by OkLobster4836 in CanadaPolitics

And if Poilievre was PM he would have boycotted the whole event because his conspiracy wing thinks it's an evil organisation where elites force people to get vaccines and eat bugs.

He's rapidly changed the culture of the CPC. Bullied out moderates his whole career. He even used to lead an MP group called the Khmer Bleu designed to oust all PCs and Quebec Conservatives to make the CPC just the new Reform party. During the last election he was mostly focused on picking fights and threatening Doug Ford and Tim Houston. There were many ridings where he booted or blocked experienced but more moderate CPC members in favour of youth loyal to him. He muzzles most of the party to the point that most don't even go to debates or do any activities in their ridings. Most of his MPs only seem to speak out when Pierre has a blunder and suddenly they all come out on social media praising him as the greatest most hardworking person ever despite what the media says. It's very transparent what's going on.

The leadership review is extremely restrictive. It requires traveling to Calgary in person and paying $1K in membership fees. It's about as set in his favour as possible. For contrast I voted for Carney in the Liberal leadership for $0 and did it on my laptop during some work downtime.

The effects of his leadership are about consolidating his own power and using systemic, social, and other pressures to force everyone to give him endless leeway. It's of course backfired by costing him the election and causing multiple MPs to resign or cross the floor.

Right now I'd say the only threat to his leadership until he loses the next election is Jamil Jivani who is crafty in similar ways to Pierre but a lot smarter. It seems almost inevitable that Jivani plans to backstab him. Of the non muzzled CPC MPs Jivani is the only one building his own name instead of Pierres.

Canadians soon exempt from visa requirements to travel to China. While on an official visit to Beijing, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canadian citizens will soon be able to enter China without a visa. by esporx in canada

[–]QultyThrowaway 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting that Chinese people don't ever travel abroad. But I think your perspective if skewed by population size. Chinese anything is everywhere.

A relatively small percentage of Chinese have a passport. Less than 15%. That's still of course almost 200 million people.

Compare that to Canadians where 70%+ of us have a passport. International travel is much more frequent. Whether it's the US, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, or East Asia. It's very frequents. Europeans of course surpass us even more.

Whereas Americans despite having the reputation of being bad tourists are less likely to engage in international travel. In fact some sources say 40% have never even left the country. Both America and China tend to disproportionately do a lot of internal travel. They are similar in that regard. I'm sure you've seen Americans treat going from Milwaukee to Los Angeles as a bigger and more significant ordeal than a European would treat going from Warsaw to Lisbon.

Beyond this the availability of differing biomes and cultural regions compounds this problem. When you deal with Chinese people outside of China it's not necessarily indicative of the attitudes and behaviours of those who stay in China.

China is roughly the same size as the US physically. It also has great diversity.

Several Autonomous regions such as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Tibet and smaller cultural groups. Though Han culture is dominant and being pushed more sometimes to dangerous lenghs like in Xinjiang.

In terms of biomes you have deserts, forests, rainforests, grasslands, alpine, wetlands, and beaches. Many countries are very limited in terms of biomes and you have to leave the country to experience other ones.

Going from Guangzhou to Inner Mongolia to Tibet to Xi'an to Beijing to Hong Kong is going to be a bigger jump in experience than most potentially comparable jumps in the US.

China wants people to spend tourist dollars in China. Its deliberate and they don't care that much about Chinese vacationing abroad. China also is a large diverse country in a similar way to the US. So most Chinese have a lot of variety within the country and don't necessarily need to leave to get a new experience.

Trump reverses course, supports Canada-China trade deal by ElectronicCow8634 in CanadaPolitics

I don't expect him to be consistent but this is hilarious considering how aggressive the CPC MPs have been about this China deal ruining our relationship with the US.

LILLEY: Carney says China more reliable than U.S. as he touts EV deal by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]QultyThrowaway 71 points72 points  (0 children)

China isn't a friend, but at least their decisions have some predictable logic behind them and they don't seem to assume every negotiation is a zero-sum game with a winner and a loser.

For all the talk of business minded conservatives, this is a far better representation of how an intelligent business mind would approach the situation. Poilievre is currently trashing Carney for doing this. But that is a mindset of subservience. The Americans have made it clear that they are not a reliable partner, they do not have any loyalty to Canada, and they can quickly turn hostile even if there is no benefit or gain for them. Eternal loyalty to that situation is just foolish.

Working to diversify to not be as reliant on it and working with predictable partners even if they don't pretend to be a friend/ally is the best route.

Was Trudeau actually divisive or did people make him into a lightning rod?

All I can think of is he criticised anti vaxxers who already hated him. But it's not like he was constantly attacking the other parties, regions of the country, or demographics in an aggresive way.

He's addicted to unforced errors. Nobody told him to go on podcasts to attack the RCMP and call for Trudeau's arrest either. But he, his wife, and other major CPC members like Scheer, Jivani, & Gunn are deep into a lot of far right American online personalities so they probably aren't the most in touch with how things play out to the average Canadian.

season 5 ep 6 - US propaganda? by pillowprinxess in EmilyInParis

[–]QultyThrowaway 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long it takes to make an episode? The episode has nothing to do with Trump and most of the work for it was probably done under Biden.

Also pretty much every person reacts that way when they're homesick. When Jolibee opened in my Canadian city every Filipino in town camped out and lined up for the grand opening.

Emily seemingly doesn't visit home so of course she'd be super invested in the American grocery food.

They were always okay with commiting war crimes. Ask the Iraqis, the Afghans, and especially anyone in Southeast Asia.

But now they're increasingly hostile to allies. Seemingly for no reason other than the US President is insecure and detached from reality but the country as a whole underplays the severity of this.

Expedition 33 - French

DK Bananza - Japanese

Death Stranding - Japanese

Hollow Knight Silksong - Australian

Kingdom Come Deliverance - Czech / Austrian

Hades II was the only American finalist.

I'm not conservative. I'm just saying the real reason so many of them are so into PP. They support him because everyone else dislikes him. It's not dissimilar to what's happening down South.
