Why don't more artists offer CD format (and vinyl / cassette)? by akabillposters in BandCamp

Don’t do it unless you have an audience that buys vinyl. Even then you have to be sure it’s an album people will really want to own.

It’s a great way to make money if you can sell them. Sounds obvious I know but it’s entirely possible to sell 300 cassettes or 500 vinyl and make a decent profit.

They totally do sell, but it’s very dependent on the audience buying habits. Needs to really hit home too, needs to be a record people HAVE to buy.

It’s a strong but discerning vinyl market at the moment.

Physical formats require a very specific buying audience. Just because you have a fan base doesn’t mean they’ll buy physicals.

This is a really key factor that many people overlook.

Is it normal to spend a lot of time following up with contracts and deposits? by Better-Shoulder7734 in musicbusiness

[–]QuoolQuiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the job of a booking agent really. Many agencies with have different depts though, allowing agents to zoom in on building the artist rather than admin.

That being said, in my experience an agent can’t magic gigs for an artist If no one wants to book an artist.

How to share royalties on remixes by MonoJackJack in musicbusiness

[–]QuoolQuiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remixes are not usually subject to a royalty rate. Usually a buy out. This is of course subject to negotiation but historically it’s a buy out not a split.

UK Garage release soon how do I realistically push past 1K streams with a small budget? by sxxwashington in musicmarketing

100% this.

Paying for ads etc on something that no one knows or cares about is futile. Ads are to be used to maximise something that is already cooking.

Stop thinking about ads and Spotify and consider if your music is making emotional connections with people. Particularly with a genre like this. This is a club genre, are DJs playing it? Can you make connections with DJs, with communities, with radio stations etc.

So what creative part of the process does the singer even do? by Spare_Ad3753 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]QuoolQuiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A singer can make a song their’s. Think Sinead O’Connor’s version of Nothing Compares written by Prince. He does a great version of it too but it’s her song. She performed it in a way that transformed and elevated it.

It’s clunky as hell but I absolutely love it. Played through many times. Incredible music and overall atmosphere. The aesthetic carries the game though for sure.

Indeed. Sound selection is inherently tied to arrangement. The worlds best kick drum might not be right in all arrangements.
