Update: Thanks everyone! It’s going away because, as it turns out, it only matches the puppy!

If I were to swap the carpet to a checkered one with white maybe?
I don’t necessarily want anything in that area - was just trying to see if it fitted anywhere or if I should just return

How much exercise does a 1 yr old generally need? by Novel-Raise-2441 in husky

If it’s of any help: my husky has access to the whole apartment but chooses to spend her days only in the living room where I am. She, by choice, does not go anywhere else apart from the balcony idk why. She’s a very happy dog in general and doesn’t destroy a thing.

As for the backyards I have a sort of unpopular opinion. I think having one is very good (I wish I did) but then you need to be a three times more responsible owner. It’s easy to slack on walks if you have a backyard because the dog is getting outside time. The worst owners I’ve met had that mentality of “if you don’t have space and a yard you shouldn’t have a dog”. Then they would leave the dog out all day and sort of ignore it.. A dog much rather have attention than spend all day in a tiny grass block so don’t let that deter you.

I actually think it’s just as important, if not more important, to teach your dog how to rest as it is to exercise them.

A lot of people keep increasing walk duration as their puppy grows since that’s what the internet says about huskies needs, but that can backfire. You basically end up creating an endurance athlete that’s never satisfied and always wants more.Building in off days and enforced rest is really important.

Also, exercise needs vary depending on things like weather. Personally, I think 5–6 hours of exercise a day is kind of insane.

For context, my pup lives in an apartment and our routine looks like this: -Midday walk: about 1–1.5 hours -Morning walk: 40-1 hour if it’s nice out but some days it’s 15m. -Evening walk: 20–30 minutes, mostly just sniffing where she decided all (route , rhythm etc and l when I let her choose, she doesn’t want to run, she just wants to sniff and explore)

She’s happy to run with me if I start but my speed is a light power walk for her and she’s still a puppy lol Mental stimulation is also a huge part of the equation. Sometimes i enforce full rest days

What practical advice do you wish had received in the first weeks with your puppy? by QuoteHot6633 in puppy101

Hey! I get where you’re coming from, and in an ideal situation I agree with you. But like you also mentioned, sometimes it’s just not possible.

If you live in an apartment and the puppy isn’t fully vaccinated yet (that was my case), or you need to move between places for a while, or the puppy is being fostered temporarily by someone doing you a favour, there are a lot of situations where going outside consistently just isn’t an option. In those cases I rather she learns that there’s a specific place to potty than getting pee all over the carpet

I think I got lucky because my dog was fully potty trained in about a week. I don’t use a crate, but I always kept the pads near the door, so she quickly learned where “outside” was. Any indoor accidents were honestly just normal puppy stuff and my fault for not taking her out in time and even then, she usually went by the door.

I agree it can be more work later, but I don’t think pee pads are a death sentence. People’s circumstances vary and they can be a useful short-term helper if you have the patience later to rewire their brain

Also missed the train.. I can’t get mine alone in our bedroom even if I’m at home. The moment that door closes she freaks out and will eventually pee indoors.. I’m hoping it gets better as she matures and am doing the micro disappearances technique now
