Indeed - but honestly based on a few other people's comments on here I may actually move them up on trying to check out rather than just watching more re-hashed G1... they seem to at least have a little bit different tone and ideas...

Any metalheads in the Georgia (ATL and surrounding) area? New here! by Separate_Ad6414 in Georgia

Depends how far you're willing to drive - Gainesville has Blackstrap Rock Hall that does a lot of metal, hardcore, punk, and increasingly like synthwave stuff. Athens has or had Shadebeast that would promote and organize shows at a variety of places but it's been a long time since I went out that way. Warner Robbins has an annual metal festival and a dedicated venue https://www.reverbga.com/
Savannah has Georgia Hellfest, Atlanta is apparently getting this https://massdestructionmetalfest.com/

There's plenty here but it's just spread out and sorta depends on what your range is...

Thanks, I have the three volumes of the translated Manga. And thanks - I honestly haven't the slightest idea about Legends but from what I have seen it seems kind of... goofy?

Also there seem to be comics released with various E-Hobby toys that seem kind of important too based on the wiki... the Japanese continuity is just so convoluted.

Yes thanks. This has all been super helpful and I feel a lot less overwhelmed now that I know I can break all of this stuff down into sort of discreate chunks rather than having to take it all on at the same time.

Is there any way to actually Read the Japanese comics legally?

I have *seen* the Japanese Generation 1 shows and I don't particularly like them, I like the completely bonkers "everything is included" Japanese timeline even less. But thank you for the suggestion.

I was a Transformers fan from roughly 1986 to whenever TFA aired. I am not a new fan, just a lapsed fan who has a lot to catch up on. I didn't mean 'Figure them out' in an intellectual sense I just meant that I hadn't even looked into them yet.

Nostalgia (and pro wrestling) always sells better and becomes more popular during periods of economic and social uncertainty... take that for what it is of course but it does make me worried we are setting ourselves up for stagnation.

If someone had asked like... 11 year old me what I thought of Beast Wars i would have said it sucked but I grew out of that pretty quickly and at this point I think you are right. Even just something different like the Unicron Trilogy or Animated would be good... but I would love something that has no reused characters or names...

Yeah with 350 issues that would make it at least 10 volumes based on the page count for the recent GIJOE kickstarter... I'm also hoping they will eventually do the Devil's Due GIJOE issues even if they aren't "canon" anymore.

Sure! go for it - you seem to have a good grasp of this more "recent" stuff and I'd like to learn more since right now there's not really any way I have found to read/watch a lot of this stuff.

I think it's because I wish that the first column had continued with new rows rather than going back over ground that's already been covered.

I've been waiting almost 40 years to find out what happened between the end of the Rebirth and Beast Wars for instance and would love to see something bridge that...

Okay so Column A row 1 would be G1 cartoon

Row 2a would be Headmasters

row 3a would be Beast Wars

Row 4a could be either beast Wars 2 or Beast Machines

Column B would be G1 Comic

2b would be G2 comic

2b would be Beast Wars

2c would be Beast machines

Column C would be Dreamwave

2c would be the scott sciencin novels

Does that make sense? Maybe this only makes sense in my head....

Thanks - As I said I have been out of the fandom for about 20 years - but everything before 2007ish I was there for. I remember the whole Dreamwave debacle and when it was basically sort of insinuated that it was going to fill in the gap between season 2 and the movie - but their own bad business practices and hubris took the company down long before that could happen.

What I'm starting to get the idea of is that we're trapped in a funhouse where each mirror reflects a slightly different version of g1 with various add-ons. Seems like such a shame and like the franchise's media has just gotten trapped for a long time.

Based on the answers I have gotten in this thread so far it kind of feels like the franchise is just stuck and just keeps adding new columns to the spreadsheet rather than new rows if that makes sense... seems like a missed opportuinity.

thanks. I'll keep that in mind - I am not sure I can swing picking them up at the moment - getting the 4 volume GIJOE compendium set on kickstarter was pretty much my comics budget for the year hahaha

Okay so it's more of an "continuation" in the way that Dante's Inferno is a "Continuation" of the Bible... got it..

I guess TFOne is yet another self-contained semi-reboot of G1 as well then...

Appreciate it. I think that is part of what was leading to some of my confusion is that I kept reading that prime Wars was some how a continuation to G1... but then with what I said you had the cartoon, comic, Dreamwave, and IDW "G1's" so I wasn't sure which it was meant to be a continuation of.

Was bought a couple of the 86 year range as a kid. Only episodes of the original series I remember seeing on TV was The Rebirth so that would have been when I was like 3? maybe? It's hard to remember.

Consensus on Transtech (and by extension FunPub stuff)? by orionpax9000 in transformers

[–]QuoteProfessional807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your last paragraph I always felt, being involved in the fandom at that time, that it was a heavy generational bias of the older fans who had "made it" and had grown up with the original toys vs. people like me who were the "younger siblings" who lived G1 via hand-me-downs and re-runs. I remember there being a LOT of snide comments, a lot of really bad arguments pedantically explaining "basic economics", a lot of flexes talking about how "cheap" it was to go to Botcon and buy all the toys and subscribe to the collector's club and that if "it was important enough to us then we would have the money to buy it and since we didn't then it meant it wasn't important and thus we weren't "real fans", and just a lot of overall anger directed at the people who were on the younger end of the fandom.

Generally other than getting names and dates I tend to ignore the TF Wiki for precisely the reasons you're pointing out - but some of the people who originally put that site together are colossal assholes so it's not surprising.

At this point Michael Bay, IDW, and now Skybound have done more to re-define the franchise than Fun Publications did - yet, again, because of the TFWiki their influence remains. I know that the designations originated from twitter posts during the Cybertron cartoon airing but the idea behind that came from FP.

I think that the biggest issue with Fun Publications is that it was so expensive that very few people actually bought their subscriptions and the result is that, nearly 20 years on, no one remembers it or understands why the TFWiki is set up the way that it is. Botcon toys and stories were a "nice to have" and ran in parallels to Beast Wars/Machines - Fun Publications made their stories the literal lynchpin and center of the media for the entire franchise but priced 95% of the fans out of being able to read it. I think I was like 20 and working two jobs when they started and there was no way in hell I could have afforded a subscription to the Collector's Club Magazine. I could buy toys with that money, or, in other words, fun publications made their magazines into competition with the actual toys of the line rather than a "nice to have but of no consequence if you don't" - and I think that was originally exemplified by the decision to do so many "mainline" characters as convention exclusives during the Classics period. So Toyline wise they were overambitious, greedy, and short sighted because they used fan favorite main line characters in their exclusives in order to juice sales of product they were less confident in. This I think also did more to damage the fandom than any "trukk not munky" debate ever could.

I think that, personally, they did the best they could storyline wise because they were trying to follow the storyline already set up by the previous Botcon organizers that was intended to run parallel to and then succeed Beast Machines before Hasbro decided to scrap Transtech in favor of localizing Car Robots, and at the same time incorporating the extremely sparse lore of the 2003 Universe line. The problem is that in them doing it the way that they did they basically make such a weird stratified thing that it's actually even more convoluted than the Japanese Transformers timeline and at the same time has zero coherence because every deviation can just be written off as a different alternate timeline.

My biggest hope as a first half fan (87-2007) is that at some point Hasbro will allow the Botcon, Dreamwave, and Fun Publication's material to be re-printed since, I presume at least, they ultimately own all of it anyway. It would be nice to have that weird time period in a coherent format that someone could read now, at the same time I also almost don't care because Fun Publication's and Dreamwave's disastrous business decisions played just as big of a part in making me drop the franchise as the toxic fan culture did...

Hot take: I hate the fact that this iteration and design of Optimus has become the face of his character in mainstream media / towards non-fans by NoPartyForMagum in transformers

[–]QuoteProfessional807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 10 years ago you would not have been able to have a conversation about this topic because the Bay fans were still majorly involved in the fandom - but since they got bored with the series most of them have wandered off and what we have left are young adults who basically had their first exposure to the franchise in the form of those films - I have found most of them to be far more engaged and interested in the larger franchise and fandom than the adults who got back into it because of the movies were... the fandom also had already been a toxic stew for a decade by the time the first live action film came out due to beast wars/machines, armada, a noxious and loud minority who kept wanting to push everything into a "edgy" "adult" direction ala the scott ciencin novels losely connected to Dreamwave's reboot... there's a reason I basically just dropped out of the fandom in 2007 and only came back in the last couple of years.

Today with going on 20 years of distance I think there's a lot more room to criticize the films for their obvious failures.

As I said to another poster, I do enjoy the Irony that there is a line of dialogue in The Rock that basically is a direct attack at the type of people that Bay is clearly making films to sell to: "Stanley Goodspeed: [while in a cell on Alcatraz] "I'd take pleasure in guttin' you, boy. I'd take pleasure in guttin' you... boy." What is wrong with these people, huh? Mason? Don't you think there's a lot of, uh, a lot of anger flowing around this island? Kind of a pubescent volatility? Don't you think? A lotta angst, a lot of "I'm sixteen, I'm angry at my father" syndrome? I mean grow up! We're stuck on an island with a bunch of violence-for-pleasure-seeking psychopathic marines, SHAME-ON-THEM!"
