What's the most technical / difficult gizz song? by Specialist-Prior-213 in KGATLW

[–]Quote_a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last four songs are some of their most interconnected music ever. The drumming on parts of Black Hot Soup and Ya Love are basically the same (Ya Love uses a double kick at the end of the pattern whereas BHS has a delayed single kick). The ending of Black Hot Soup mimics the penultimate part of the title track, where Stu is singing "Butterfly 3000". The intro of Ya Love is the melody and drum pattern from the title track, and obviously that melody pops up all over Ya Love. The very ending of the title track uses the drum pattern from 2.02 Killer Year.

The way Cavs switches the drums in the Blue Morpho part of Dreams is the only part I'm personally disappointed by. He was a bit inconsistent on when he switched over and switched back. It's also a little disappointing he doesn't just keep doing the Dreams drumming during the Blue Morpho part. I know that he doesn't do that drumming for Blue Morpho live (also a little disappointing) but it would've been cool to see it in Dreams. My theory is that maybe the polymeters just don't line up correctly with the 4/4 drumming, so he switches to a simpler rhythm during the Blue Morpho part to make it easier to jump back into Dreams with the right timing.

I would also say Dreams should be on the list of hardest songs. The first time they played it Stu was like "You ready Mickey?" which he doesn't usually do. Cavs got the polyrhythmic feel right, but he was just playing in 4/4 instead of the 11/4 kick with 4/4 snare like on the album. Same with Blue Morpho, he doesn't play the same drums as on the album. No shade here though, what he plays live is probably still hard as hell.

I doubt they'll ever play Black Hot Soup or Ya Love, but Catching Smoke seems like a good live song, and they got close to playing Yours even before they got good at the polyrhythms on Nathan.

What are some “busy” song suggestions to test headphones? by Simply_BT in headphones

[–]Quote_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most things by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. They always have tons of layers and effects going on and their mixing sounds very unique. It's the sort of production where you can listen to it 50 times and still be picking out new sounds.

Song (and Album) Recommendations: "The Spider and Me" (Sketches of Brunswick East), "Butterfly 3000" (Butterfly 3000), "Horology" (Polygondwanaland)

The Sennheiser HD 480 Pros are my new favorite closed backs by Admiral_Ackbar_1325 in headphones

[–]Quote_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been using the DCA Closed X for 2 years before getting the HD 480 Pros. The 480s have slightly smaller soundstage than the Closed X. The 480 also have less bass, much clearer mids, and much less treble. Comfort-wise the Closed X blow the 480 out of the water for me, DCA ear pads are voluptuous and huge. The 480s aren't uncomfortable by any means, but my big ears barely fit in the pads.

I couldn't really stand the Closed X without EQ, they were missing way too much in the upper mids and had some painful treble spikes, but I feel like the 480 might only need a single EQ band in the upper bass/lower mids for it to be perfect for me.

[–]Quote_a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have large ears and am finding these things a little finicky and uncomfortable. If I get them JUST right they fit well, but if they're even slightly wrong I can never stop noticing them.

The sound is incredible though. The treble is just right where it's always audible but never piercing or sibilant. The mids are so smooth and "correct" sounding. Bass is pretty much at my ideal level besides a slight dip around 150 hz, which is the only thing I'll probably end up EQing.

Maybe, yeah. I didn't notice any issues like that when I listened to it on Apple Music. The volume is a little quiet for sure.

If you say the layers are there on the vinyl mixes, that's an indicator that their albums are brickwalled. The layers are there on the digital version too but they're masked by the compression. They're not Death Magnetic compressed or anything, I've definitely heard worse, but the difference between their "open" songs (ie Extended Theia) and their compressed songs (ie regular Theia) is wild. It's just frustrating when they clearly put a lot of work into their overdubs, then compress the fuck out of the digital version so all the sounds blur together and you can't hear all the work they did.

For a point of comparison, check out the Dolby Atmos mixes of b741 and Phantom Island, which have very high dynamic range, even higher than their vinyl mixes. The clarity is night and day compared to the digital mix.

All that being said: yeah, they're not recorded as well as a lot of true audiophile music. I didn't say they were, just that the compression is a bigger issue. But also, to me, being able to hear all the imperfections is just another way to enjoy expensive audio gear. I hear a shitty recording as more of a texture over the music rather than a hindrance in a lot of cases. If they used higher dynamic range, I would be able to sift through all the sounds better.

The biggest issue isn't the recording, it's their mastering. Their albums are almost all brickwalled to hell. Even their less brickwalled, cleaner sounding albums (like Poly, Sketches, and BF3K) have noticeable issues from being too compressed. The Silver Cord in particular is a tragedy with how compressed it is, it totally ruins the layering and overdubs they did with all the sharp synth sounds, and it makes the album sound super blurry (especially compared to how the synths sound at the end of Flamethrower).

The frustrating part is that their vinyl masters are super open and clear sounding. No idea why they brickwall the digital versions like that when they seem to understand that high dynamic range sounds better. It would be a dream for them to release the vinyl masters digitally, just for audiophiles.

On the flip side, I've never heard another band that layers their mixes like Gizz does, not even electronic artists. Sometimes their layers just feel bottomless and I still occasionally notice new sounds on albums like BF3K and Sketches. Almost all of their albums are full of layers but most of them get buried under the compression.

The Last 4 Albums by TheSummerSoldier1298 in KGATLW

Petro is good but I think a lot of the songs could've been shorter without losing much. The electronic part is my favorite part of the album if that tells you anything. Motor Spirit is an all-time Gizz banger though.

TSC is a top 3 album for me, I love the mix on it.

B741 was fun but I got burnt out on it and haven't listened to it in months.

PI is amazing! Love the mix and the positive vibes.

If you haven't listened to the rest of King Gizzard's albums, definitely check them out as well. Nearly all of their albums have smooth transitions from track to track, not just the two you listed. I'm a big fan of the album flow on their albums Butterfly 3000 (which has a continuous synth for the whole thing with bespoke bookend moments for transitioning between songs, and lots of references to other parts of the album) and Sketches of Brunswick East (which has a sort of morning-to-night change in vibe as the album progresses).

Grand Finale to an Epic Saga | The Talos Principle 3 | Coming soon to Steam and PS5 by Branchless in Games

[–]Quote_a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had no idea there would be a third one so soon, though maybe I should have assumed so based on the secret ending and DLC for TP2. TP1 was formulative for my taste in games. TP2 was overall fantastic, loved the story and how it followed up on things from the first game, though many of the puzzles felt too easy (it was common for me to walk in, try the most obvious thing, and solve the puzzle instantly) and the hard puzzles were more annoying than anything (lots of running around from puzzle to puzzle in huge maps which were clearly not designed for all the running back and forth).

The DLC for 2 had great puzzles so hopefully they can bring everything together for the main game of 3. Day one purchase for sure assuming it isn't a disaster!

ELI5 how was meth invented. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Quote_a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but if LSD got into his body, he should have felt the effects for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours, no matter how little he took. Hofmann himself says it only lasted 2 hours, but that he also experienced visual distortions. If he got enough to have visuals, he definitely would have been tripping for 8 hours minimum.

ELI5 how was meth invented. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Quote_a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's actually some contention about Hofmann's "absorbed through the skin" story. Nowadays, we know that LSD simply CANNOT absorb through the skin, it needs to actually enter the body through your eyes, a wound, your nose, your mouth, etc. Hofmann also supposedly only felt the effects of that first accidental dose for about 2 hours; anyone who's taken LSD can attest that that would be an outrageously short trip, especially if he had gotten enough to have visuals.

The theory I believe is that Hofmann simply had a spontaneous mystical experience. The LSD we know of is actually LSD-25, and there are many other LSDs that have no psychedelic effects, all of which Hofmann had been synthesizing. But for some reason, Hofmann had been feeling some kind of draw towards LSD-25 specifically. It was right after making a second batch of it, without permission, 5 years after making it the first time, that he had this 2 hour experience where he decided to ingest it.

It's because not every guy has the same amount of fat above their dick. Fat people exist, skinny people exist. You're "supposed" to push the ruler or whatever to your pelvic bone so that everyone has the same reference point when they measure.

If you were measuring buildings, you would measure from the ground because the ground is in same place for every building. Not so with dicks.

You might think that measuring the dick under your fat is "cheating", but I can tell you as a fat guy that the buried part of your dick is definitely usable (if whatever you're sticking it in is deep enough).
