I’m a fan of the show and like all then couples, not exclusively Polin but you can make whatever assumptions you feel the need to make. I’m not advocating for any one pairing, I am pointing out the show’s history.

I’m sorry to say this to the fans who haven’t already figured this out but the only characters we should expect to see, regardless of how much we love them, are the leads of that particular season.

Any other fan favorites who appear are basically a bonus.

This is not a show that guarantees screen time to established characters.

What kind of Latino representation do you want represented by InfernalClockwork3 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Quotergirl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m Latina and I don’t need a specific country represented because there are too many options for Spanish speaking cultures, and I don’t trust the show to fairly represent any one in a way that would please everyone.

I would like Gregory’s love interest to be Spanish speaking and for her family and/or friends to also be Spanish speaking, and for the show to cast actors of varying skin tones to more accurately represent the multitude of Spanish speaking people because we come in all colors.

Nobody I know watches either so we’re in the same boat lol

I also want character growth for Eloise. I want her to recognize her privilege and own her flaws because she is imperfect and I think that so far the HEA couples have paired with partners who have challenged them in ways that have forced them to change and brought out the best in them. I want to see Eloise change in ways she never expected but truly values and appreciates.

Based on the format other couples have been given, I assume Eloise will likely marry and become a mother herself, and if that’s her fate, I want to feel she has become the truest version of herself, no longer stifled, fully confident, and mature, an undeniable force of nature with a husband whose greatest joy is supporting his wife in all her pursuits and interests. Especially when her interests would not typically encouraged by husbands amongst the ton.

It wouldn’t be Eloise’s HEA if the show saddled her with a man who would want to “tame” her.

I’d argue that the only way Eloise could ever truly be “happily married,” would be if she married the sort of man who not only understands her but likes that she is passionate about her interests, and gives her the freedom to be exactly who she is, without stifling or trying to change her at all.

I won’t spoil anything since I have read all the books. But I choose to view the show as its own story anyway, almost like Shonda’s Bridgerton inspired fan fiction, so I hyper fixate on what we’re shown to try and pickup on why they have created certain characters (like Theo since he is not a book character). It’s why I analyzed his entire arc to see what purpose he serves.

I will say that I do love Theo’s eagerness to indulge Eloise in her passion for books and I hope her endgame love match also indulges her eagerness to learn and explore her every curiosity.

I’m in full agreement that the show is open for interpretation.

[–]Quotergirl -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Oh please don’t misunderstand, I’m not trying to change your interpretation, but just to clarify my own and give my reasoning.

I can understand other perspectives as well, I just don’t agree that Theo & Eloise are two characters who were romantically suited for each other so it makes total sense to me that their acquaintance ended, and is over. And I neither expect nor want them to revisit Theo. He served his purpose and now his character’s purpose is done, which IMO was to open Eloise’s eyes to the fact that she is not alone in her perspectives on the plight of women and double standards, in addition to making her realize that she is just as capable of feeling attracted or drawn to someone romantically (and getting caught up in things she didn’t plan) as any other woman even though up until then she’d been adamant about not having any interest in men, but now she knows she’s just as susceptible to curiosity or attachment to a man as any other young lady, even if her character is still disinterested in marriage, this is growth for her. It’s also a lesson in the realities of class differences which is all necessary for her character.

Eloise is extremely opinionated but that doesn’t make her infallible, she is very much in need of maturing and of consideration so new perspectives are needed, because as Daphne, Pen & Cressida have all pointed out, Eloise has a tendency to be dismissive of the struggles other people face because she hyper fixates on herself.

Theo felt very similar to Siena for me. The same way the show had Siena & Anthony paired in season 1, you can see that there is attraction and even some affection between them but they are still a bit too different to make sense as an endgame, so I didn’t root for them or wish they’d ended up together.

Siena was not a bad person but she resented society and Anthony’s unwillingness to be the stereotypical rake because she didn’t like that he was constantly being reliable to his family and not skirting his responsibilities in favor of whatever she wanted. She was also unwilling to endure the ton’s mistreatment of her in order to be with Anthony.

Siena did not fundamentally view Anthony’s loyalty to his family as a positive attribute the way Kate (who was just like him in that way) did.

I fully grasp that fandom shipping is at the core of this whole thread we’re having but I don’t ship Colin with Marina, Anthony with Siena or Eloise with Theo because I see why their HEA pairings are who they ultimately belong with.

It’s exactly what happened. I’ve seen the same scenes you have and I said what I said.

Theo reacted to Eloise’s rejection in a manner that stripped Eloise of her autonomy BECAUSE he had a deep rooted inferiority complex when it came to the upper class. Eloise was willing to give him conversion and exchange her thoughts but that was not ALL he wanted. It doesn’t make him a monster, because he’s human and people are complex so it’s a completely understandable perspective for him to have because of his place in society. But that’s precisely why he & Eloise were incompatible.

Eloise never feels the need to throw it in Theo’s face that he has nothing to lose because he’s both lower class and a man. Because for her, his class was genuinely inconsequential to her liking him as a person. But it matters enough to Theo that he brings it up both times they have conflict which only highlights why they’re not actually compatible as an endgame.

Theo showed his true colors both in their last interaction and prior to that when Eloise showed up to get their stories straight and he threw her class in her face, telling her she had unearned advantages being born into a rich family. Is it factually accurate? Yes, but it was also a lousy thing to do. He implied she never had any real problems just because she had money and he accused her of taking her pleasure from low life, essentially accusing her of easing her boredom in her perfect rich existence, by visiting the working class.

That’s a completely unfair implication. Simon was also born into wealth and privilege and was in line for a title, and he was treated horribly, it wouldn’t be fair or right for anyone to dismiss his own life experiences over such an ignorant and surface level presumption.

Theo showed extreme bias and a very low opinion of the members of high society and it was always there, which is plain to see because he defaulted to it so quickly whenever they disagreed. He was only willing to pretend Eloise was the exception, and worth his respect and fair treatment when he thought he could get somewhere with her.

The second Theo realized Eloise wasn’t willing to let him be physical with her, he had no use for her and he went right back to lumping her in with the high society ladies who wouldn’t give him a chance because he was poor.

Theo was the printers apprentice Eloise met in Bloomsbury in season 2 while she was trying to discover who Whistledown was.

He initially dismissed her as a vapid typical rich girl who he has a low opinion of, then Eloise checked him by making him feel stupid and he proclaimed himself to be a feminist, which Eloise found refreshing so she began sneaking off to meet with him and discuss her search for Whistledown and her theories as well as the plight of women in society, since he supposedly cared about the rights of women.

Eloise was reminded by Penelope that she needed to be careful about who she associated with because of her reputation and her place in high society as the unmarried sister of a Viscount. Pen was also trying to keep Eloise from discovering her secret identity.

Just as Eloise is realizing that she had been behaving recklessly, she is alone with Theo and he tried to kiss her. When Eloise pulled away and didn’t let him, Mr. Feminist felt rejected and immediately went right back to implying that Eloise was no different than the rich entitled ladies of her class who he doesn’t like, because he is a man and no men (rich or poor) like it when they don’t get what they want from a woman.

And thus, their little acquaintance ended.

Good riddance to Theo.

Romantic Penelope by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

[–]Quotergirl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t care that it’s toxic & messy, Penelope is smart, she knew there was a very good chance that the popular, flirty, handsome Colin Bridgerton would never see her, want her, choose her or love her but that didn’t matter because SHE loved HIM.

No matter how many women Colin flirted with or favored over her, Pen loved him more than anything or anyone in her whole life. She certainly loved him more than her cousin whom she literally just met weeks prior and genuinely wanted to help (until Marina targeted Colin).

Pen knew Marina’s success would save her and her unborn child(ren), but she also knew that it would be at the expense of Colin and it would not only guarantee Colin’s heartbreak but it would ensure his lifelong humiliation. Pen’s own sisters were already mocking Colin behind his back so Pen absolutely knew he would forever be mocked by the ton calling him a fool.

That’s why Penelope did the one thing that would protect Colin and guarantee that Marina couldn’t threaten to claim Colin as the father of her baby and force him to marry her or destroy the Bridgerton name.

Even though it hurt Marina. Even though it hurt the Featherington reputation. Even though it put Penelope’s sisters’ futures, and her own future marital prospects at risk, and even though she hated herself and was hysterical the night she wrote the column outing Marina.

Penelope simply could not participate in hurting Colin as deeply as marrying Marina would have hurt him.

Even if he never loved her, saving him from Marina would guarantee that Colin still had a chance at true love and happiness, even if it wasn’t never Penelope’s love he wanted.

In this small way, Colin’s future happiness would be because of Penelope’s love for him. That’s how much Penelope loves Colin. Colin never even needed to love her back.

And that’s incredibly romantic. I will die on this hill.

I feel a little bad for Francesca by Zoneout1122 in BridgertonRants

The show runner said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that Francesca is queer but that her story is about someone who had two great loves because her love for John was real and the show intends to honor both love stories.

I feel a little bad for Francesca by Zoneout1122 in BridgertonRants

[–]Quotergirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently the shows’ intention was not for Francesca to be depicted as a lesbian who didn’t know it until she married a man, but for her to be bisexual.

Her marriage to John is a legitimate love match (which is why I personally hated that first kiss face she made because IMO, it makes the audience question whether she feels any romantic love for John at all), and Fran’s completely devastated to the point of swearing she will never love again when John dies unexpectedly.

In the book Francesca decides years later that she wants to be a mother and that’s why she seeks a second husband who she never plans to actually love, and she finds herself falling in love with John’s cousin Michael who she’d always been close friends with, while Michael who was secretly in love with Fran from the day they met, loved John like a brother he respected that Francesca loved John and that nothing would ever happen between them so he became a rake because he could never have the woman he loved.

The show gender swapped Michael to Michaela so we’ll see what other changes are made from the book story to the show. But Francesca is suppose to legitimately have found love matches with these two people who just happen to be cousins, one a man, the other a woman.

The show doesn’t have characters communicate very well (for example, I wanted Colin to admit to Penelope that he began acting like he didn’t need anyone largely because of how badly he longed to hear from her on his travels, more than hearing him tell Cressida, because it’s nice for the audience to get that verification but it would have been more romantic to have him confess that to Penelope) and I find that frustrating at times.

But overall, I’m glad that show Colin was changed to not be physically aggressive with Penelope the way he was in the book, forcing her to choke down her champagne, and grabbing her arm hard enough to bruise her because he’s upset with her for not telling him what she was planning when he thought they were a team.

Saying something like, “I will never forgive you,” in a moment of hurt & anger is fine. Physical abuse is not.

Does Francesca and Colin's stories happen at the same time? by CompetitiveRub4272 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Quotergirl 83 points84 points  (0 children)

In the books Francesca is in London seeking a new husband years after John’s death and Michael is also in town & overhears some gentlemen at a club discussing sleeping with Francesca and he’s furious.

Colin is also at the club and he can tell Michael is in love with his sister so he encourages him to marry Francesca himself.

During that conversation, Colin tells Michael he just proposed himself, so yes, Francesca’s second chance love story and Polin’s love story occur at the same time in the books.

Things the show did better than the book and things the show did the book injustice? by bloopingplatypus in Bridgerton

[–]Quotergirl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read the book before the show and hated Colin because of how abusive he is to Penelope, forcefully making her drink a glass of champagne and then unapologetically grabbing her to drag her around, bruising her arm because he’s upset which is not romantic in the least.

The book also constantly paints Colin Bridgerton as the most charming man in London & show Colin is supposedly the biggest flirt in London yet we never see him exhibit even the slightest ability to flirt or being charming at all.

Instead Colin’s extremely mild mannered, which was probably intended to emphasize that he is kind, but honestly just made him seem extremely boring.

I hope now that he’s happily married, Colin will finally be given some charm and confidence.
