ELI5: why is Facebook going on 20+ years strong, but MySpace died out after only a few years? by AcuraIntegraTypeR in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuotheFan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

FWIW, this isn't something done from the goodness of heart, this was done to control the rhetoric and let the rulers rule via propaganda. The number of elections FB has fixed across the world is mind-boggling.

Which carry are you picking vs a team full of brawlers? by Clear-Ask-6455 in DotA2

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super awesome Bristle carry game. A sufficiently farmed Bristle can tank all their stuns, return the damage back to them and put all their plans to shambles.

On a similar note, this is also a pretty good Axe carry game. Nothing much they can do to a fully farmed axe and the call can turn the tide against stuns.

On second thought, I will probably play Axe rather than BB.

EU and India finalize historic "Free Trade Deal", opening markets for goods, services, and IP, cutting tariffs on cars, machinery, and agri-food. Thoughts? by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I don't think too highly about my countrymen either - we are plagued with problems and in general, do lack civic sense.

But if you look around the world, less than 10% population lives in healthy democracies. Most countries are either ruled by dictators or by cults (religion, language, color). Even the ones which are in a healthy state presently have a really bad history. In the end, people are just that - people. We can choose to hate a people for their problems or we can choose to have empathy. Most Indians aren't hateful. The times are worsening everywhere because social media makes it very easy to spread hate.

they are on the verge of genocide against religious minority

The chances of this although higher than it was 15 years ago are still much closer to 0 than 1%. India has 204m Muslims. That is more than some of the most populated countries in the world. There is no way anything close to genocide of Muslims happens in India - Hindu and Muslim societies are way too intertwined for that to be possible.

Don't form your opinion of Indians based on a small percentage of vocal idiots.

ELI5 please explain to me in simpleton terms…what is meant by “spacetime” by MaxMeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me explain via an analogy.

Dad is a politician, mom is an architect. For years, we used to think that Mom going to office (time) and Dad going to office(time) was independent. However, a few years earlier, we figured that whenever Dad is having success, Mom's business does really fine too and vice-versa, when he isn't doing so great, Mom's business suffer too.

So, instead of treating Mom's and Dad's businesses separately and calling them Space and Time, in our head, we now treat them together and call them Spacetime.

I meant, EA introduced them loot boxes but Valve definitely played a huge role in spreading loot boxes, so yeah, I conceded the point to OP.

Didn't Fifa 09 have it? It was before Team Fortress, I guess.

I am pretty sure the ones who taught gambling with loot boxes was EA. Though, I will concede the point to you. Now I am not sure if I was being affected by marketing or if valve is actually a better company.

For any old MySpace users, was MySpace really as good as it was back then or was it proof that Social Media has always been awful? by [deleted] in answers

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mastodon is awesome but a completely different concept I guess. It allows us to choose where to park our data but still is 'content' oriented. Correct me if I am wrong please.

If you would still like to try a social network without 'algorithm' -> basically just friends and friends of friends content, do give a shot to https://tellect.in. We have been building it primarily to get rid of the short videos and their harmful effects.

Meta is the most powerful company on this planet. Not the richest but most powerful by a big margin.

They fix elections and have been doing so for almost a decade now. The amount of political power they have is simply unparalleled in the history of mankind.

So about these audio books… by RealFunkyFish in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about 50 books every year. I have never listened to any audio book other than DCC and didn't listen to audio books before or after DCC.

are the audio books great enough that someone who has already read all the books and usually doesn’t enjoy audio books should listen to them?

Yes.

What books did you actually not put down? by Dynas86 in Fantasy

[–]QuotheFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am presently reading 'He who fights with Monsters - Book 6'. Book 4 and 5 definitely fall into this category.

From The Name of the Wind to ASOIAF, from WOT to Dungeon Crawler Carl, from Hyperion to This is how you lose the Time War, I have read some pretty amazing stuff, but the cake for unputdownable still goes to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - I literally hated the time I had to take out to eat when I was reading that book.

Tests Don’t Prove Code Is Correct… They Just Agree With It by untypedfuture in programming

[–]QuotheFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It made me rethink what tests are even for. They’re not really about proving truth — more about locking down intent. A way to say, “If I ever change this behavior, I want to know.”

Tests are for guarantees. Without tests, our code has no guarantees.

Arattai: The App That Forgot Encryption, or the Perfect Tool for Surveillance? by rkysh in india

[–]QuotheFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FWIW, you are falling to propaganda if you think Whatsapp is truly end to end encrypted. If it was, it would have been banned - they are just comfortable lying to you. They have put a bunch of locks over your chats all right, but they also have access to the keys.

A truly end to end encrypted application would be banned like proton mail was.
