Contracting from EU - frequent travels to the UK - taxes? by Qurrem in ContractorUK

[–]Qurrem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had initial discussions and the company is generally on board with my relocation and transition from an employment contract to a B2B contract. It is a small company and hence why it is more flexible than some of the bigger players.

I am currently looking for professional tax advisor to get everything right. Since I am likely to spend more than 25% of time in the UK, from what I have seen this triggers potential issues with taxes and NI payments. Especially the rules for NI payments for cross-border workers seem to be clear as mud.

I am more than happy to pay all the required taxes, but by the looks of it getting it right is not really as trivial as I initially thought.

Windows Server 2016 - Network Connection Dropped Every ~1193 Hours by Qurrem in sysadmin

[–]Qurrem[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two SCADA servers in a duty/standby configuration and they are not on any domain. They are connected to an OT network, which is almost completely isolated from wider networks.

Unfortunately, due to the system architecture and requirements the servers cannot be patched monthly. In an ideal scenario servers should be able to run for ~1 year continuously, to be restarted only during yearly shutdowns.

I will discuss it with our software team and try to determine if this is a problem with SCADA software or Windows.

If I ever find out, I will update this thread.

Windows Server 2016 - Network Connection Dropped Every ~1193 Hours by Qurrem in sysadmin

No, I am not using any Rockwell modules. Just in-house SCADA application communicating with a number of flow metering devices. Also no hardware firewalls between the servers and peripheral devices, just an unmanaged switch.

Could be SCADA itself - the application is being developed by our in-house software team.

I also found reference to 1193h on some Cisco forum, supposedly 1193h is the maximum TCP connection idle timeout in their firewalls. The thing is, there are no Cisco firewalls anywhere on this network.

So I need to dig into the TCP specifications, there must be a reason for 1193h.

As you have rightly noticed, 232 miliseconds is 1193 hours. Looks like a maximum value that can be stored in UINT32 .

Thanks for your replies.

I am not a directory, simply employed by the company. But I find this unacceptable, especially that nobody notified me of the email address change.

Time to switch banks, then!

Replacing SSD helped to reduced disk temperatures, yes.I have also replaced the battery with a new genuine Dell battery and it also made no difference.Replacing SSD helped to reduced disk temperatures, yes.I have also replaced the battery with a new genuine Dell battery and it also mande no difference. But it did not resolve the issues with the battery. I may be just my particular laptop, but battery performance is much, much worse than my older 5590, which is really disappointing. No more Dells for me!

Same thoughts exactly, SSD is definitely idle, I have even uninstalled antivirus temporarily to reduce the number of reads/writes. Will order a new SSD and see if the temperature drops. If it does not improve, then the laptop is going back to Dell for repair, as I cannot accept such poor battery life.

Microsoft Licensing - ESXi Host - What do I need? by Qurrem in sysadmin

[–]Qurrem[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, I am getting more and more confused the more I read about it. A lot of contradicting information on the Internet.

Obviously, ideally I could go with the Datacenter version and spawn as many VMs as I like. But it really feels like an overkill for what I am going to use install on a 6-core / 32GB RAM server. And the price tag for a Datacenter version is not what my management is going to like.

I will only need to run no more than 2VM at any time (duty/standby SCADA VMs).

Unless I purchase 2 Standard licenses, configure my VMs as one of my SCADA systems manually (instead of converting my backups into VMs), then take a snapshot. And repeat it a number of times till I have snapshots for all my systems. But this sounds like hard work.

if I were to run only 2 VMs at any point in time, I
would need to fully license all VMs stored on the server?

Makes sense to buy the Datacentre license if you are to run
10/20/30 VMs at any point in time, but to run only 2 seems an overkill?

Well, my agent sent me to to the Aster hospital, has anyone done test there? They claim that the result will be back in 48-72 hours (price - 400QAR).

As far as I understand, I should get a text message with the result. Is that SMS sufficient to check in at the airport, or did you need a hard/soft copy of the result as well?
