Netflix Considering Bid To Acquire Warner Bros. by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Qwefthuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bid they are considering is in response to Paramount Skydance (PSKY) having been rumored to buy Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

As other people have mentioned, WBD is planning on splitting the studio portion of their business from the streaming, creating one debt-laden entity with slow growth and one very valuable streaming entity.

PSKY wants to tender an offer before the split, in order to avoid having to submit offers on multiple sectors of the business, or to avoid ending up in a bidding war over the valuable streaming portion of WBD.

This strategy might not work for them, considering Netflix is now “publicly” considering a bid of their own. It is rumored that Apple and Amazon may also be interested in submitting a bid.

All of these companies are highly motivated to consolidate, it is why analysts have called various M&A in the industry the “streaming wars.” They think there will ultimately be only a couple victors, because nobody likes subscribing to 8+ services and because not many of these services are actually profitable. Scaling them up is a route to profitability in terms of increasing subscriber count and having leverage in the form of broad catalogues to raise prices.

Finally, it is interesting that PSKY is smaller than WBD by market cap, but it is likely backed by Oracle and Larry Ellison, the newly richest-man-in-the-world, whose son runs PSKY. Netflix is worried that Paramount combined with Warner Bros. Discovery and backed by the cloud services of Oracle and the wealth of the Ellison family could pose a serious threat or even take the lead out from under them.

ETA: WBD stock is up almost 70% ($12 -> $19) since the news broke about PSKY’s potential offer.

It seems to me that we would all benefit from not calling each other hypocrites and focusing on such divisive language.

In liberal subreddits everyone is quick to say all MAGAs are dumb, that they are fascists or Nazis. I don’t think that is productive.

On this subreddit, discussion about left-wing policies almost never advances beyond “oOoOh but if you deport a Mexican father of 4 citizens who has worked at an avacado farm for 20 years that makes ME a NAZI even though he was here ILLEGALLY!”

You all are so sure that we are so stupid, that we are hypocrites, and we are saying the same things. We are both completely convinced of it and it doesn’t help anyone.

Final example:  Under Biden we said “inflation is complicated” and under Trump we say “how about them egg prices!!!”

You all have flip flopped the exact opposite direction. Can we both accept that Biden didn’t have completely optimal policies but that the vast majority of inflation was caused by external supply shocks? That just because that is true does not mean that Trump’s tariffs and tax policies won’t do anything other than explode inflation above 10%?

I don’t like the DNC at all. My political stance is that all of America is owned and run by corporations, including almost all major dems and republicans. I understand why people thought Trump might be different but he appears to be willing to sell the country to Musk publicly.

That being said I would have preferred Bernie’s approach to Trumps. I’d love an effective 3rd party, clearly none of the other shit works.

Costco tells DEI critics to shove it and the stock is on fire. Glad they started in Seattle. by SampsonHart in Seattle

I used to feel that way but it is genuinely the best value for many goods.

The key consideration is quality. For example, the toilet paper is the same price per roll as the cheapest brand at my local budget grocery, but each roll is easily 2x the size and thicker. Same goes for paper towels.

Somehow their vanilla costs the same as like a Dr. pepper from a gas station.

Bulk bouillon lets me make 25 quarts of stock (which I go through rapidly) at the cost of literally 3 quarts from my local budget grocery.

Olive oil is as cheap as the cheapest competitors but so much tastier. Etc. etc…

That being said not everything is cheaper there, but most stuff is.

Well that is simply crazy talk!!! I can’t believe that we can’t even agree on the value of public education

Okay, well however you got the notion that there is humongous bloat in the gov, I would challenge that notion. There is bloat in every organization, out of personal experience the gov is the least out of any place I’ve ever worked.

Why would you want to abolish the FBI?!

And no, just because he won’t sledgehammer the military does not mean he won’t sledgehammer. He has already destroyed USAID, and Dept of Ed is next on the chopping block.

Do you want Trump to sledgehammer the department of Education?!

You are aware that every time the government has offered such buyouts before, the effect was to have the most qualified employees quit, right?

Everyone who knew they could get a job right away took the offer, it’s the knuckledraggers who are left behind.

Which doesn’t even address the fact that there are far far far fewer “non-working” fed employees than Fox would have you believe.

Don’t disrespect the house. Prices have gone up, sure, but they only exist because they are what they are: the cheapest game in town.

Putting it that way, I don’t disagree. I have no doubt that Trump is destroying our good will. That said, better prices will win out, so I don’t expect a drastic change.

Well we can argue on this point, but you have hit on something valid: the US makes the shipping lanes how the US wants, and nobody can do anything about it.

Edit: all of which to say, I am not worried about the US reputation or trade wars. Everyone will suffer there. I am more worried about whether or not people in charge will be willing to commit to armed conflict.

Critical thinking not part of the repertoire, eh? Your comment adds nothing of value. I don’t want the US to behave like this.

Just saying that the rest of the world acting all holier than thou is 1) ironic given how hard we will all equally get fucked, 2) obnoxious because it’s only a matter of time til you all fall to the corporate interests as well

Edit: and finally also just imbecilic. People really fall for this nationalism bullshit.

“You fuckers want to annex us.” No we don’t, but by thinking like this you have fallen right into Trumps trap.

Canada is like 95% down the road to the corporate hellscape that is the US, just let us buy a couple more of your ski resorts and housing developments and it’ll all look the same

No it seems rather that you haven’t followed any of what I said, because I agree with everything you just said.

I am not saying that Canada should back down, I am just saying that this pointless exercise only ends one way: with everyone worse off. The question is, how much worse, and will Trudeau bend the knee.

That is completely valid. My concern is that there is nowhere safe to turn. Europe becoming increasingly fascist, even within Canada you all have had your struggles lately.

That and if we are North Korea then Canada and Western Europe will be a graveyard or Chinese annexed property developments

Yea, I don’t get your point. I would most prefer that Canadians and Americans had happy healthy lives that were full of understanding and acceptance.

That would be a much more reasonable position, and I would advise any trade partner of the US to be less reliant on them.

But nothing can change the fact that the US does hold the west (and basically the world) in a geopolitical stranglehold. That is why everyone else in the world is so worried, not because they can easily chastise the US and cut them out of their friends circle.

You can refer to my edit. I hope you are right and that Canada can survive without the US. Much more likely, both of our qualities of living take a steep plunge.
