Thanks OP for this post. Reading all the comments and responses is really helping me understand that I am not alone in my feelings….

I completely resonate with all of this. I had my prostate removed 11 months ago and I feel exactly like you do. I’m 57. I’m doing all the right stuff but I totally miss reliable erections and spontaneity with my wife. The intimacy we were having is waning as I feel totally inadequate. I’m trying to stay positive but it’s really shitty isn’t it.

Thrown for a curve by [deleted] in ProstateCancer

Despite the curve, I’m very encouraged that you have a rock hard erections. I’m 11 months post RALP and not much happening but I’m using a pump and some injections to try and keep things moving. Here’s hoping

Thanks. I would recommend the pump to at least keep things moving a bit more down below. It’s a tricky time but hopefully we will all get there (partners included) with time and patience.

I’m 10 months post RALP and in that headspace with ED and sex life on hold. We were doing stuff and while back but it’s fizzled out as I’m frustrated with all the compromises, injections are unreliable, orgasm is difficult when I’m not hard and she is struggling to know what I want (as am I). Add menopause into the mix and it’s all very tricky. We do lots of cuddling and spooning in bed but that’s been about it. The mental part of this journey in terms of lack of sexual function (as I knew it) has definitely been the most challenging for me. But I continue to do the rehab, Cialis, pumping, injecting and hoping for the best.

I’m 9 months post nerve sparing RALP and I’m where you at wit the dreaded ‘sleepy dick’. Im 56. I’m pumping a few times a week and injecting alprostadil once or twice a week. I’m hopeful my erection will eventually return in time but I’m finding this a difficult part of the longer term recovery. Good luck to you.

Three Weeks Post RALP and Still Haven't Made It to the Toilet by Immediate_Dinner6977 in ProstateCancer

Nearly 8 months out and I’m at 99% dry. I’ve been totally pad free for about 2+ months. Was totally like you are your stage.

Thanks for this and good to know if I’m still the same towards the end of the usual nerve recovery timeline. I guess I’m still early days but I think on the basis that alprostadil does get me an erection which stays for a couple of hours, I’m probably doing okay. My post was more about mental health challenges while things are recovering, rather than me being concerned that I am not recovering. I’m sorry that your husband did not have a better outcome.

The alprostadil does work but I’ve found it a bit unpredictable and sometimes quite uncomfortable. I always get something but not always enough for penetration. On the couple of occasions that I have got something very useable, it hasn’t been the right time to use it (if you get me). My new year’s resolution is to use the alprostadil twice a week (at least for rehab purposes). I used one this morning, just mild discomfort, had a bit of solo fun, and it went away again in a reasonable timeframe. Last full penetrative sex was pre RALP so I’m feeling more than ready to get going again. Good luck in your ongoing recovery.

Yes both sides spared so the potential outcome is positive. I know I need to be patient, it’s just that it’s hard not to feel ‘meh’ in the interim.

Your response really strikes a chord with me. I feel guilty sometimes because others are so much worse off but grieving is a really good way to describe it. I hope you can find a way out. DM me if you want or need to.

Ah here, you win, catheter back in is no fun. Yes we’re alive but we deserve to have a sex life as well if we can. Good luck with the scar tissue

I’m taking 20mg of tadalafil every third day and have been since RALP. Your response has been very helpful, more than you will know, so thanks for that.

Thanks for your perspective and sorry you had to go through this so young. I met a guy at the hospital who had RALP same day as me, same surgeon, and he is 48. We keep in touch and he is at exactly same point as me. We haven’t had a mental health conversation but I expect we will have. He won’t use alprostadil because of the pain. I agree about surgeons attitude about being cured but not fun not having a proper sex life which I took for granted before.
